Here are some of my thoughts on the Canon C200 shooting Cinema Raw Light on this specific test shoot. This is a pretty extreme test with some challenging lighting conditions. I was, however very impressed with the image quality from the camera. Watch the full video for my thoughts and breakdown.
Filmed at Old Harry Rocks in Dorset, England.

Canon C200

Thanks for sharing so much detail about your experiences with the CRL files from the C200. Been using the camera for a year or two but usually stick to 8-bit & Canon Log 1 because that's what I'm most comfortable with, but this video really encourages me to film in Raw more often. Cheers.

Fantastic work mate! Love this style of review, and how you got straight into the meat of what industry professionals want to hear, rather than the typical "KZfaqr" junk.

I've been looking into getting the c200 for a while, and every shot I see from this cam is just amazing for the budget. People may complain about the file sizes for CRL, but there are dummy CF to SSD converters you can use. I'd smack a 2TB m.2 SSD on there, and I think that'll give you about 4 hours of CRL footage. lol ( I hope my math is right) Great in depth review btw. Did you ever figure out the solution to the banding?

Hey Mike, Thanks for the comment. I definatley agree, the C200 is still a fantastic camera for the money. We've upgraded to the C70 (and C300 MKiii soon also) but the C200 still delivers an excellent image in Canon Raw Light. In answer to your question, yes we did figure out the issue and it was down to Premier Pro (Lumetri) not correctly debayering the footage. I'd highly recommend using Davinci Resolve for grading (and editing!!) and you'll get much better results. All the best and I hope you enjoy shooting with the C200! James

Are your go to lenses the sigma primes over the 18-35mm or a 70-200?
@jamesm.williams969
@jamesm.williams969 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Felipe, thanks for the question. Typically, yes - but it depends on what the job requires and the budget mostly. Personally, I preference is always to shoot primes as I prefer the optical quality over variable focal length lenses. And I'll only use them if I need to work VERY fast or it's impossible to change lens for whatever reason. My go-to when shooting most work will be my Sigma Art Primes (I own 24mm, 35mm and 50mm). But, if the job warrants it and the budget allows I would use Cine Primes (Canon CN or Sigma Ff) which we would hire in. Also, if I'm shooting Sony E-mount (FS7 for example) or Fuji X (X-T3) I would use the Fujinon MK Cine lenses - but unfortunately they're not available for Canon EF.

Enjoyed this, would changing the ISO have removed the lines in the sky?
@jamesm.williams969
@jamesm.williams969 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I don't think so as the ISO (dB) was set to native base iso (0 dB) so the image quality and DR should be it's best. My guess is it would be a limitation of how premier Pro interprets Cinema Raw Light footage and exporting in 8bit but I need to test this in Resolve to confirm!

@@jamesm.williams969 Thanks for that, I have FCPX and Da Vinci Resolve and I have seen really nice footage degraded and I have been unable to understand why. It's complicated for a layman. I am looking at buying a C200 as a documentary type cam, I am constrained by budget. Did you rig up a 1TB SSD as cards seem to get filled so quickly when shooting raw.
@jamesm.williams969
@jamesm.williams969 4 жыл бұрын
@@atlanticdriftfishing6451 I personally don't rig up an SSD into the CFast card slot because for me that would be detrimental to how I shoot. I went for the C200 because a lot of the work I do is run & gun, documentary or content that means I need to move fast and stay as light as possible. The fact the camera does Raw internal was a big selling point as I didn't want to have tons of accessories and things hanging off the camera - I just wanted it to be a solid unit that could be a run & gun shooter one day, then the next day it could be the base of a more cine style rig. I have seen people doing it, but for me I need to trust that my footage is being captured safely and recording to a drive that hasn't been tested and approved by Canon would make me feel on edge until I reviewed and checked each clip to ensure it wasn't corrupt etc haha. Perhaps I'm less of a risk taker - I just prefer to be more certain that I'm going to get home and my footage is going to be okay!

how would you compare the c200 to the c70. plan on upgrading? pros and cons?
@jamesm.williams969
@jamesm.williams969 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It would be hard for me to say as I've not tested the C70 yet. But from looking at specs alone the C70 seems to be far better equipped as it uses the DGO sensor from the C300 III. Only downside with C70 is no raw recording. Yeah, I'm very interested in getting my hands on the C70 for a test with the idea of upgrading.
