Hi Matthew! I hope you are doing well. Thank you so much for this video. I heard you mention that you got your Bachelor’s from Walden and I’m set to start the Tempo Learning BA next month! I have a few questions if you don’t mind answering: 1.) How long did it take you to complete your Bachelor’s? 2.) How were the courses and assignments structured? 3.) How long did it take you to go into your MBA after completion? 4.) Do you have any other advice or things to be cautious of in the Bachelor’s Program?

Hello Kandace! Congrats on enrolling! I have so much, maybe I should do another video for Bachelors. First, I would look at the TEMPO AIM (Accelerate into Masters) version of the BSBA that Walden just launched recently. May speed up the masters if you want to do both. This wasn’t available when I attended. Second, are you transferring in any credits or an associates degree? If you haven’t done all your “general education” classes or basics like Math, English, basic business, accounting etc…. USE SOPHIA. Walden (and lots of schools) partner with Sophia learning which is online classes that are guaranteed to be accepted at the partner universities. They’re cheaper! Something like 100$ ish per class. My Walden advisors/coach showed me like 3 classes I was able to take via Sophia, and then just move those credits to Walden. There is more variability in class length and subject matter in the Bachelors than the masters due to electives. Each Bachelors class is 5 quarter credit hours. BUT, they can be broken into different numbers of competencies. (Sections) Finance was 4 sections of 1.25 credits each. Data Science essentials was 3 sections Information systems was 5 Sections (competencies) of 1 credit each! Each competency has 1. A SHORT EASY pre-quiz. Gauging what you know about the topic already. (10 minutes max) 2. A discussion board you must post to. (You’ll probably spend maybe 30 minutes max on these) they’re meant to be pretty casual. 3. All the course readings and videos. 4. A “pre-assessment” This is an outline for your main assessment. It allows you to basically do a “rough draft” of how you will complete your final assessment and you submit this for professor feedback. The professors like outline format for this like bullet points and to see ideas of how you’re tackling the assignment. Then you apply their feedback to work on your assessment. The assessments vary in length, but they are basically a few questions each that cover the course content in depth. You’ll answer in long-format paragraphs. Expect Somewhere between 6-11 pages each assignment double spaced if I recall correctly? Don’t quote me on that. Many assessments also require you to submit a related PowerPoint along with the paper. My advice on these is USE THE RUBRIC. The professors spell out exactly which class ideas and topics you must cover in your answers for the pre-assessment. They specify the length too I think. If you learn to follow that each time, you’ll be golden. You will get the choice for business electives and some general electives! I specifically chose ones with less competencies (sections). Example, Business critical thinking was 2 competencies! Longer assessments but because it was only 2 competencies, it still felt shorter. I tried 1 or 2 classes that sounded “fun” like “Economics of public health” HARD. Too much math, it had a timed exam. If you want to make life easy, choose your elective wisely! Review the assessment topics BEFORE you read and watch all the course content. It’ll help you choose which readings and videos to focus on. Overall, if you haven’t done a “self-paced” program anywhere before, it will feel overwhelming at first, as it looks like a mountain of work. Use the built in calendar and STICK to it as best as you can for each competency. I think I gave myself a goal of like 10 days per competency which felt pretty aggressive. Sometimes Life got busy and I had to push dates back. My Bach degree was awarded 7/31 I think and I started MBA on like 10/1. You could start it sooner I imagine but I needed a vacation! Heads up! Tempo sessions are always 90 days, no more no less. So if you have 1 class left but only 10 days left in TEMPO session, they’ll enroll you in a new one of 90 days. But! As you only have 1 class left, you’ll be done way before the 90 days. They’ll actually reimburse you if you complete your program early in a tempo session. BUT, the downside is they wont process graduation and award your degree until the END of the 90 day tempo session. So you’ll feel like you’re waiting around forever. Hope this all makes sense! Let me know if I can help further.

Thank you so much for this detailed video! I am starting the tempo learning MBA in June and all of this information was so valuable! Just out of curiosity, how have things been since you graduated in terms of finding employment?

Hello! Ya know I already worked in private banking with a big company that I like for a decade now. So I’m just working on internal transfer/promotion which is in the works. Walden does have a career center you can book a meeting with, they also have a pretty cool job/internship search tool called goin global which is like Indeed, LinkedIn, Monster all in one. Truthfully It doesn’t carry the prestige or recruiting opportunities of the big name universities, so you’ll have to search around a bit nearing graduation to really find what you’re after.

@@Businessblend that’s great information! I’m honestly not worried about either. I’m a clinical social worker and am employed for a large hospital corporation and I’m just more looking to get out of direct care and into admin level positions within my current company (or perhaps another healthcare company at some point). I’m not looking for the degree to carry prestige, just to open more doors and supplement the management experience I already have. I was just more curious! Thanks for sharing. I look forward to any future videos you might post.

In that case it’s perfect! I would say my immediate colleagues and management have been impressed with the initiative and work that it takes to get MBA. It had positive impact on my current company standing and management went out of their way to ask what my goals/next steps are. Best!

Great video. Thank you. I’m looking at WGU and Walden. Can you advise how long it took you to get your degree? If I missed it in the video sorry. Also, can you do a video or share on what each course took? Like the classes and what assignments were needed to complete? Also did they do pass/fail and did you transcript show a gpa? Thank you.

Hey Dennis, It took me just about 1 year. October-October via the tempo learning. I can probably do another video that gives more info about course content. Each class, Finance, Accounting, Marketing etc… are broken into 3 sections or “competencies” as Walden calls them. So for finance as an example you’ll have MBA Finance 001, MBA Finance 003, MBA Finance 003. They’re technically 1 credit each. So you can see the whole degree as 10 classes of 3 credits each or 30 “competencies” of 1 credit each. Each competency has a paper “assessment” to pass. Sometimes it’s just a Word document paper (8-12 pages is typical). Sometimes the assessment would be Word Doc + PowerPoint or Excel spreadsheet. So overall it’s 30 “assessments” for the whole program, a mix of word excel and PowerPoint, but mostly word documents. They’re long format answers so you’ll have questions like, “What are the short term financing strategies ABC company can take? Which would you recommend and why?” You’ll have several of these in the same word document for each assessment. Again I think 8-12 pages was typical. Shorter if there was also a PowerPoint or Excel to do as well. The classes are pass/fail basically. If you do enough to pass, you get a B. If you “master” your assessments you get an A for that competency. You get a standard GPA out of 4 based on that.

OMG, thank you thank you thank you so much for responding. I kept checking back hoping you would 🥲. I’m in the midst of working with WGU to start in December and I saw Walden University after. You’re the only person with a review on the MBA program. I am thinking about WGU only because I have a lot of time on my hands and it seems like you can get through the MBA faster over there. One woman got her MBA in 10 days. She did 12 hr days sometimes and others 3hrs but she got it done. I figured Walden probably wouldn’t be as easy?? Im already in the field but I never went back to get my masters. I hope im not sounding like I just want to skip learning but honestly I just want to get it over with in this point in my career. It sounds like my goal of getting it done within 90 days won’t happen at Walden. I will still go there for my DBA. Also WGU sounded more “forgiving” when I came to writing papers and their assessments. Again, I have time on my hands so me getting into done in 90 days would be my goal but I didn’t want to get in there and realize I made a mistake 😅. You don’t have to do a video (you don’t have to anyway because it’s your decision 😂) about the breakdown of the classes, but you could. It would definitely help some folks out there who are deciding and who want to see if they can save money by getting it done faster. Thank you so much again for your response. I greatly appreciate it.

@@Businessblendone more question. If you look on your transcript does yours show pass/fail or does it show a GPA? For WGU it is blank. Just wondering, thank you.

@@denniswithabow it does show a GPA on the top of transcript. Each class gets an actual grade (A,B…)

I’ll see if I can still log in and see how the courses look! Every class such as finance or marketing is broken into 3 parts (competencies). So you can see the program as 10 classes of 3 credits each, or 30 competencies of 1 credit each. Each competency requires 1 discussion board (normally 3-5 paragraphs). AND 1 Assessment The assessment is long and you submit and outline for review before you finish and turn in an assessment. Assessment are a combo of essays (normally 8-12 pages) as well as PowerPoints and Excel spreadsheets sheets. For example, for the finance class, 2 of the 3 competencies required both Essay and Excel spreadsheet. The other one was just essay I think. Hopefully that helps!

I want to register for Master criminal justice at Walden tempo learning. But I was wondering if the instructor let you have a second chance to fix your papers or 2 chances for submission?
@Businessblend
@Businessblend 2 ай бұрын
Hello! For Tempo, you get a “pre-assessment”. In which you submit an outline of your paper and the instructor provides feedback, before you submit an actual assessment attempt. You get 3 attempts at submission. The instructor will use the rubric and give you feedback on each submission, letting you know what’s missing or required to improve to a passing score. I don’t think I ever had to use all 3 submission attempts. As long as you take your time and do a nice outline “pre-assessment” and pay close attention to feedback. You’ll certainly pass each assessment in 1-2 attempts. Note* I notice they didn’t often pass my first submission attempt. I think professors appreciate when you spend a little time responding to their feedback and improving your paper, even if it was pretty good the first attempt.
