Nailed it in many ways. Ten best is not easy when you have many more than 10. Writing is what counts. Each time I pick up a pen & write, my views on it evolve. One comment, you show the limited edition 492, Year of the Rat, sold out. 487 is the current version of the magnetic filler from PenBBS, many available. Surprised the M8 wasn't mentioned. I remember it as KZfaq has your review of it at the top as I write this. Have a Joyous New Year that produces more top tens.

Aaron, thanks for taking the time and research for pen reviews and advice. Since the "pen" is the nib touching paper and transferring the ink, there are a number of possibly variable factors. Once you start changing the nib or even tuning it, doesn't that change the quality more than the pen itself? If so, then this a good review of pen / nib combinations. The video is interesting in giving ideas and direction but not much guidance. Maybe a helpful video would be one on nib/feed choices for Chinese pens?

For the longest time, I thought my "fountain pen fascination" season ("frenzy") that I was anticipating for... probably many years was going to take place much later in life. I have no idea why I was imagining getting into fountain pens like a decade from now as if "settling down" from a pretty busy life would suddenly give me time to enjoy fountain pens. But now I'm here and glad to say I chose my first fountain pens to learn on quite well. I have been quite enjoying my pen hobby of late. Because of preferences I had learned about my writing tastes, I chose 3 fountain pens to start out with. The one I have now refilled the cartridge with ink is the transparent and clear Pilot Kakuno with an EF nib. It writes such a fine line and I am so glad to be able to current use printer-quality paper as a regular journal for destressing on a regular basis. That and documenting things I'll inevitably forget is very helpful, too. Thanks for your reviews on these pens! I enjoyed getting to see what you really like using.

Great video, thank you very much for sharing. My personal top 5 list is: Penbbs 355 (#1), Hongdian Retro 960, Jinhao 100, Moonman T1 and Moonman M800. What do you think about Hongdian pens? In my opinion this brand will be a great success soon. The build and finish quality is above average for Chinese pens, and the nibs are the most consistent in my experience (although only available in F and EF). I feel the writing experience of Hondiang nibs are very similar to Faber Castell steel nibs. Have 6 models, very satisfied and inclined to buy more!

Agree on Number 1.....Love this pen, have 2 of the same, have a broad Bock in one and fine Bock in the other.

Superb choice for #1. I have five of these (I had 6 but gave one away) and I also have 6 of the original Italian models so I don't feel bad at all about purchasing the M800s. I had to do a bit of nib tuning but then again I had to do the same for the Italian pens. I would have chosen the Moonman M600S over the Jinhao but that is just my opinion. Cheers

my favourite pen at present is a parker slimfold pen, which seems to write better than most others.

Thank you Aaron for your videos which are always of the highest quality. You are a pleasure to listen to. I have a few comments about these Chinese pens which can maybe stimulate some discussion: 1) I have a different view of their nibs than you do. Of the #6 sized nibs (Jinhao, Moonman, Penbbs), the Jinhao are the most reliable in that they require the least pressure to write and are not sensitive to writing angle. However, they are just round blobs of tipping material and therefore quite imprecise instruments. The Moonman and Penbbs nibs I have found to be quite bad tbh: they are sensitive to writing angle and require a lot of pressure to write, relatively speaking. The penbbs nibs tend to be more precise than the Moonman nibs at least. One of the greatest disappointments of pens like the C1 that come with the original Moonman nib is that it is not as compatible with Jowo and Jinhao nibs as Jinhao and Penbbs pens are. At least, with Penbbs, one can swap the nib; same with Jinhao. (I have even the Penbbs round nibs to be somewhat finicky, and the EF is not truly an EF, but that is more a subjective concern). 2) The Chinese pens with Bock nibs and Gold nibs come dangerously into the territory of entry-level Japanese pens like Platinum and Pilot. I would definitely suggest to people they hold onto their money and gamble on a Japanese pen rather than a Chinese one at that price, unless of course, the full size pen body of a Centennial or Momento Zero copy is essential to you, which is fair enough for comfort. 3) For precise nibs, I haven't found a better one than the Wing Sung 6539 nib, which is a very very pleasant EF nib, but the pen falls apart within one month. 4) Other pens worth checking out which are overall very solid: Wing Sung 698 (though it has overly sharp threads) and the Wing Sung 618 (which is my favourite work pen, as I find it to be somewhat wetter than the 601 and better balanced, due to lack of a metal mechanism in the butt end of the pen). I certainly agree with the Moonman M800 being in the top spot. I keep all 4 of mine inked perpetually, and use them often. And though the design of the Wing Sung 699 is not as dramatic and beautiful as the Moonman M800, is every bit as practical, in my opinion and experience. In fact, I use my 699 pens even more than the M800 pens. So, based on my preference, I would have put the 699 vac fill in the 2nd place.

Platinum Preppy: Pro: Feels good to use, light, easy to refill. Con: Cheap plastic that has a tendency to crack if tightened even slightly too much. Jinhao 599: Pro: Durable construction, feels good to use, easy to refill. Pilot Varsity/Pilot VPen: Pro: Both disposable and refillable. Con: Sometimes dries out to the point that the nib has to be wet every time it is used. Zebra Fuente

A couple of days ago I ordered a Moonman f9, which is a copy of the montblanc rouge et noir, and honestly, is the biggest surprise of the year. I may be biased because I love the design of that pen so much, but to me is an amazing pen. It's well built, it's a piston filler, a beautiful nib and less than 15 euros, shipping included. The nib is not that smooth, it has a good amount of feedback, but for some reason I love the feeling of it, and it never fails. I find it surprising that it is a well selling pen on alibaba, and yet it has almost no reviews on the internet. I've liked a lot some pens this year, but this was the most surprising by far.

I have the Jinhao Centennial with their 14K nib, which is a wonder. Got one for my son, too. It is that good. Have you tried the Hong Dian Mt. Qomolangma with their 14K nib? For writing pleasure, as a nib, may be better than my adored Pelikan Souverän m805 Stresemann. Well, no. Well, apples & oranges. Hope you are emerging well from the Pandemic.

Love the Jin Hao 159. I like the weight and size posted. I’m a fan of 1.1mm stub nibs. I like to replace nibs with a Goulet one. I love my Edison Collier in Antique Marble with a steel1.1mm nib. I also have a Stipula Etruria Rainbow Prisma with a titanium flex nib. That’s my most expensive one. I love penabling newbies with a Wing Sung 3008 though.

Please about your PENBBS 487, where did you buy that pen?

The 51A with Bobby nib is outstanding and I love the 323s. 699 is very good, and weighty feeling. I was burned by the UN-improved 355 in Galaxy. Hate it. 456 is the ubiquitous penbbs. Jinhao 100 is AMAZING - I have a dozen! And enjoy mixing and matching the caps with the ivory models I bought for that purpose!

Baoer 388. These are an awesome value for money pen. They go for about $2.60 Canadian (so, almost free US). Beside a Jinhao 750 it looks like a baby 750. The body is metal and they have a #5 nib which can be swapped. . I think that Baoer is either owned by Jinhao or made in their factory. They seem so similar. The quality is miles above the cheap plastic Jinhao models and less than $1 difference in price. Edit - should have watched the whole thing. I thought that we were doing good cheap pens. But I stand by this one. Its a great first pen for a kid or a snall gift. I have had zero problems with these.

The Moonman T1 is my number 1, the C1 is next and the M8 and Jinhao 992 are tied for third!

Of the pens that i got in 2020, the highlights were: 1. Delike New Moon V2 in Dark Rose finish. 2. Lingmo "Water Dragon". Basically it's another copy of Jinhao 992. It even has the mandatory cracking barrel issue. However, it comes with clear feed (makes a big difference on demonstrators) and Lingmo nib, and in my opinion it the best writer among 992 brethren. If i should add Chinese pens purchased in 2019 (the year i got into fountain pens as a hobby as opposed to torture they were back in school), in no particular order: - Wing sung 618 - Jinhao 51A with blue swirl acrylic barrel - Lorelei 667 piston filler in Autumn finish. - HYL eye dropper pen. A 2-euro copy of Moonman M2. What it lacks in finish quality, it more than makes up for in performance.

Moonman C1 so reliable i can swear to it. Doing engineering and i use this pen everyday. Go thru the 5ml ink in in the barrel in ~20 days and this pen has never failed on me. its so good. Always writes first time and nib doesnt dry out ever even when the ink is running low. I bought it from your and chrisrap52 recommendation. Been only using waterman ink in it and i feel like its the best for everyday writing on different paper. I love your detailed reviews and i always keep an eye out for a gem like this.

Interesting. I have so many of these pens that I keep putting off testing thoroughly. I have not experimented with adding Goulet or other nibs, so you are inspiriting me. I did purchase a Stipula with a Titanium nib, and it frankly will not write! While the nibmeister tells me that is the unfortunate aspect of the nib. It works wonderfully most of the time, but some few (like mine) are totally inflexibly stiff and dry. It means I have not tried another ?Titanium nib though.

I am nuts: over 2020, I have grabbed 10 Jinhao Centennial pens in many finishes, but I do not like this one, precisely. All nibs are great so far, and I have paid 11-12 euros for most of them.

I would agree with the M 800 but my Fuliwen 017 are in my top three. I have larger hands and they fit well, write beautifully and are gorgeous to look at.

Wing sung 601 is the best fountain pen

I have that fuliwen pen in a purple, yellow and green swirl resin. Worst mistake I’ve made. The resin is ugly, don’t even know what really attracted me other than the cigar shape and that it’s clipless. But that’s not the bad part. The writing just sucks, that Fuliwen nib and feeder combo is pure crap, skips, dries, the tines are inconsistent, the flow is very poor. Sure, you can change the nib and section, but then I would prefer to build a frankenpen with another pen, really. Even being a cheap pen is too expensive for what it is.
