Thanks for the tip on Xmal Deutschland! I'd never heard of them before, I thought I knew 4AD pretty well. My treat for Christmas. Xmas Deutschland!

You bet, Andrew! They were one of the more under-the-radar 4AD bands! I wish they got more recognition! I love their first 2 albums the most! :)

It's great to find someone in the VC who actually listens to some of the stuff I do. Without mentioning names, I'm getting a little tired of the extensive hair metal coverage. I mean, I'm old AF and come from a time when hair metal was in my wheelhouse, but not since I discovered R.E.M. in 1985. I see the Game Theory LP on your wall-- kudos on that. I saw them for that tour. I was huge into 4AD for a lot of years, and still have a place in my heart for early Pixies and Cocteau Twins (which I saw for the Heaven or Las Vegas tour in Chicago with a stage-frightened Mazzy Star opening). I picked up Xmal Deutchland's Fetish about 3 years ago from a collection of 80's and 90's alternative. I love that album as well.

Hi Mike! LOL, your hair metal comment made me chuckle! I kind of do feel like an oddball when it comes to this whole KZfaq vinyl community as not many other people like the more obscure stuff from the 80s and 90s. Yeah, I love Game Theory and this was a very nice addition to the collection. It was sealed! Ohhh, I'm so very jealous that you got to see Cocteau Twins on that Heaven or Las Vegas tour. OMG, incredible! Congrats on picking up Fetisch by Xmal a few years ago. What a fantastic record! I appreciate the comment!

Many others. Thank you for the video, and Keep On Rockin!

Hello, Hanna! I love the t shirt and was so glad you mentioned where you got it! My biggest vinyl saga of late was acquiring the re-mastered MBV LPs from 2021. That was seriously a confusing mess (being in the US), and I ended up purchasing them from Australia. Fortunately, the record store owner was extremely gracious with their time helping me. I'll never forget buying the first 2 albums on CD, when I turned 20 and the store clerk saying "nice choice, amazing band." and that was exactly right! Cheers to another year of collecting!

Greetings Hanna. Glad to see another video from you pre Christmas. Great finds! The Blurred Crusade one of my all time albums and I'm glad you were able to obtain a serviceable lp. Our local record store in Santa Cruz CA is sub par as far as selection goes, so buying online is my primary mode of purchasing music. With the notable exception of the holiday season when I travel to Southern California and embark on a used record store tour around the LA area. I'm really looking forward to that and have a huge want list. Looking forward to the Siouxsie album rankings. My top 5 is pretty straightforward, but gets tricky after that. Will definitely have to check out Moose and Xmal...... Much gratitude and happy holidays to you!

Hey there, Todd! Yes, I hope to do 2 more videos before the end of the month. Well...that's my goal anyway! Yeah, I imagine you're in the boat with many others when it comes to having to buy online for LPs. Grapefruit Records here can usually fulfill my reissue and new record needs but I don't buy a ton of "used" records in town. Your record store trip to LA will be a blast! I went there back in 2014 and enjoyed visiting Amoeba and Dr. Strange (this was before I started collecting records and it was all CDs for me)! I think you'll love Xmal Deutschland since you're also a Siouxsie fan! Yeah, ranking Siouxsie albums is tough! See ya next time!

Hi Hanna 👋 - Those reissues of The Church on Arista in 1989 were almost all snapped up by Importers at the time & are rarely seen in the 🇺🇸. Love the long introduction to When You Were Mine & Almost With You is outstanding. Awesome to see Fiction by The Comsats on the wall. A beautiful album. Looking forward to the new & last Cure album & tour in 2023. Just watched Liz singing Song To The Siren & then the Tim Buckley original which he performed on The Monkees TV show. Magical song. Enjoy the snowy 🌨 day & stay warm ! ✌️

Hey there, David! Well, I'm so glad I got a very affordable copy of the 1989 issue of Blurred Crusade then! My intro to the Church was the CD compilation Under the Milky Way: the Best of the Church and I remember playing "When You Were Mine" and "Almost With You" on repeat, so maybe that's why I have extra feels for this album! I would love to see the Cure perform! Now that would be a concert! It was lovely seeing the snow fall while I worked from home! Have a great night!

Some great choices - I love Glider so much! TBH just as a piece of art the sleeve itself is worth the cost and the tracks are incredible. I would love to get an AAA vinyl reissue of the 4 essential MBV EPs like we did with Loveless and Isn't Anything. Something like Ride did with their first 4 EPs recently into a double album / gatefold. BTW have you heard the Ride reissues? Look and sound great! Blue Bell Knoll has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Doesn't get as much ink as Treasure or Heaven or Los Vegas, but it's the one I always listen to from them. I never get tired of Carolyn's Fingers. Also check out The Moon and The Melodies (their collab with Harold Budd) if you've never heard it. There were a few "first time on vinyl" releases in 2022 you might like that were killer online purchases for me: - Jon Brion - Meaningless. Originally self released power pop masterpiece on CD in 2000. This year it was finally released on vinyl (and streaming) - Pond - Rock Collection. Latent Print Records had an indie-go-go to license the masters from Sony and finally release it on vinyl (and streaming). Great 90's pop/rock record. - Joy Zipper - American Whip. Mid 2000s cd only release by indie duo, finally put out on vinyl (and streaming). Long Island mix of psychedelic rock / shoegaze-ish / indie, a classic. Joey Waronker, Kevin Shields, Guy Fixsen, Paul Leonard Morgan all worked on tracks on this record.

Hey there! YES. Glider - all of it, the cover and the music...a work of art! I also vote for quality vinyl reissues of their essential EPs! You mentioned Ride - yep, I did get the recent reissue of Nowhere. I'd like to get the reissue of the EPs, too but it will have to wait until after the holidays... As far as the Moon and the Melodies...can you believe I also scored a vinyl copy of that this year as well?! I should have also shown it. Such a stunning LP. A viewer sent me Jon Brion's "Meaningless" recently. I will probably bring that up in my reissues video forthcoming! I'm unfamiliar with Pond and Joy Zipper. Will look them up! Joy Zipper I'm especially curious about from your description! Cheers!

Hi Patrick! Ohhh, thank you so much for letting me know about that Auteurs box set. I have it on my radar - February 2023! EXCELLENT! Glad you spotted the brilliant New Order LP behind me. It is a reissue but I had to get it finally! Yes, I do have that CD compilation of MBV EPs. That's a must have, of course! Yes, Starfish by the Church is an incredible, moving album. Reptile is great. North, South, East & West is my favorite track on it. The guitars! Yes, we need an Xmal Deutschland box set now! Their first 2 albums are my favorite and most post-punk, so you already have those! The other two are more pop but still good! Oh, you need to pick up Blue Bell Knoll by Cocteau Twins! Thanks Hannah, some excellent pick ups. Delighted you have Metamatic in your collection, it’s such an important album both as a transition album for John Foxx and for electronic music. It’s a wonderful piece of minimalist electro-pop. I also adore your back wall arrangement. Some of my favourite albums on display - The Garden is a masterpiece, Movement is the perfect transition album for New Order, Fiction is such a career highlight for Comsat Angels, The Associates is such an original sound, Mesh and Lace a real taste of special things to come and Born Sandy Devotional is just Wow! It was such a joy to see them up there and another joyful experience to watch you share your passion for music.

Glad you got to meet Derek! I didn't know he was from Omaha. Very cool. Your collection is amazing! I'm probably pulling the trigger soon on "Blue Bell Knoll." Liz's vocals on that album really resonate with me. Love your My Bloody Valentine shirt! The Fall is such a great band, always enjoy their quirky sound. I had some of The Fall LPs but of course, long gone. That needs to be rectified. I've never seen that Buzzcocks 7 inch before. Hadn't heard of John Foxx until you intro'd him to me. Fantastic sound! I found The Cure's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" at Goodwill over 20 years ago. I was about to faint until I saw one of the records was missing. Arghhh! Some great albums. I have had very spotty luck with buying used albums online. Very, very few dealers are even close to being accurate with their gradings. Dealers who grade accurately are worth their weight in gold. And, since I've moved to Canada, the postage prices really sting. That said, I do buy some hard to find things on the web - when it's hard to find, you just have to eat the downside and forge ahead.

Greetings! Yeah, buying used albums online can be dicey. It's a gamble. Some vendors just don't know how to grade the records, which can lead to an awful experience. Yep, sometimes you have to take that chance for the rarer LPs! I appreciate the comment! Happy holidays!

Two rules i have tried to practice since starting to collect vinyl 12 years ago are 1.Buy everything from record shops /fairs .You cant beat crate digging and finding that album you've searched for in nice condition . 2.Quality over quantity. Only in the last few years due to lockdown have i bought online .My latest purchase on ebay is the Abbey road half speed mastered version of New Gold Dream by Simple Minds which is probably my favorite post punk album .Previously to that i bought Lloyd Cole And The Commotions Rattlesnakes .

Congrats on such cool finds. I have to hear Moose now, I knew about them but haven't heard them. Here in sunny Granger, I have to buy online a lot but I have found some surprisingly great gems in the wild this year. Some of my fave online finds were on indie label and distribution sites this year. Bowery Electric, Blankenberge, and Lacing to name a few. thanks for sharing! BTW I see that wonderful underrated Game Theory album peeking out from behind you!

Hello Hanna; Some very good online pickups. We're not online purchasers in regards to the record grading system. ( cover / vinyl ) We have always preferred in person grading of records. The Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch is a good find regardless of the pressing. The John Foxx is a nice pick up. Glad you found a trusted online seller, Honey Hole who stocks & sells records you need. The collection grows!! Take care, Tina & Pat!~

Last week I picked up a copy of "The 9-Volt Years" by Marshall Crenshaw on ebay. It's not as mind-blowing as the reviews I read had suggested, but it has the song "You're My Favorite Waste of Time." He never re-recorded it for a proper album, which is a good thing cause it sounds perfect the way it is. The latest album from Aksak Maboul is fantastic! I bought that online from the label. I live in Lincoln, so finding cool stuff in the wild doesn't happen every trip out. Thanks for the video!

Hell yeah, The Fall! This Nations Saving Grace has always been my favorite of theirs. You're right, there's something about the Brix era and they really are masters of a good riff that just gets stuck in your head for days. People wax poetic about Mark but they forget how damn good the rest of the band was. When they get those riffs going, they go hard. My favorite vinyl purchase of the year has to be either the new Loop album (Sonancy) or the 40th anniversary edition of Joy Division's Still on clear vinyl. Somehow I managed to snag #4 of 25 of a limited run of the new Loop album, so I think that was probably a good score.

Hey Hanna, I'm glad you got something from the disaster which was Liz Truss, she was unbelievably awful for us in the UK. You won't believe how she became PM; the UK is certainly not a democracy. Luke Haines is still an amusingly embittered presence on social media, though I don't think he's done anything good musically since Black Box Recorder. I'm constantly amazed at how clued-up you are on the best of obscure British music. Today I was looking through a box of my old records and found original releases which I'd forgotten I had: Nag Nag Nag - Cabaret Voltaire Public Image - Public Image Damaged Goods ep - Gang of Four Satisfaction and Duck Stab ep - The Residents Treason - The Teardrop Explodes. I do like the pop hooks of the Brix era. In terms of your stash, I lean more toward your honorable mentions. Love Born Sand Devotional, Comsat Angels, and Game Theory. I scored three LPs from the latter this year. I’ve had my eye on that House of Love box, although I have all their official releases already. Not sure if all those extras in the box are worth it. Favorite is the Butterfly album. Finally, love love the Auteurs. Every song on that album is a gem. I saw a recent interview with Luke Haines and he looks like Van Morrison’s brother.

If you're any kind of "collector", shopping on line is unavoidable. Unfortunately some of the grading leaves a lot to be desired, but you at least hope for a reasonable seller that will work with any issue. Nice pickups, love the Cure :)

Nice picks! I can remember buying Isn't Anything when it came out at Tower Records on cassette. (Wish I still had it!) and then Glider, Tremolo and of course Loveless when they first came out. I do still have those. Magical! Finally got to see MBV live years later in SF and to be honest it was a disappointment. Just ridiculously too loud and just sounded like noise. I'll stick to the studio recordings. I also saw Moose open for Cocteau Twins on the Four Calendar Café tour. Happy collecting and cheers from Sac!

Love the shirt! I am surprised you haven't bumped into Dereck more often but then again, Omaha isn't a small place. So was that Chris clapping in the background or was that a sound effect ;) I've never seen that MBV single. That's pretty cool and I bet the singles go for a lot! I am really surprised that it wasn't dropped in the US originally. It's weird and by 1989, vinyl was really getting phased out. That Buzzcocks EP is a nice one. I wasn't aware of that one at all. Love the Cocteau Twins of course and you can't beat the old 4AD records. While I still like the label, it has a different vibe now. I still buy at least one 4AD album each year. Okay...new band for this video is Moose (and Metamatic). They are new to me! I will have to check them out. I had to look at Xmal Deutschland the last time you featured them. Can't wait for you top albums of the 80s. Didn't you show the Auteurs before? I love the black and white photo on the cover. I am starting to love the compact CD box sets more and more. Vinyl box sets are just taking up too damn room in my house ;p

Thanks, Paul! Yeah, it's kind of strange I haven't run into Dereck more around town. Haha, that was a sound effect of that clapping. Those MBV EPs are so hard to get. They should reissue all of them. With Cocteau Twins, I didn't even show all the goodies I got this year that were originals! Guess I'm saving them for whenever I do my ranking of their albums! Glad I introduced you to John Foxx's Metamatic LP and Moose. I think you'd like those early Moose EPs. Stunning stuff. I showed the Auteurs on my Instagram before! 😉

This is such a great list hannah. Gonna revisit the cocteau twins for sure. Wanted to say just picked up chameleons dali’s picture demos and am blown away. I know you are a fan of those early ones and perhaps this was already available somewhere but just tremendous sounding. It’s stripped the reverb and delay from mark burgess’s vocals and removed synths such as on script of the bridge and after. These are raw, propulsive post punk. Gorgeous! My find of the year. Enjoy and keep spinning!

Hi Shelby! Glad I gave you the nudge to revisit Cocteau Twins. Seems I listened to them more than I ever have this year. Maybe they finally clicked for me this year. I love your picks. Back in the day, 90s/90s era, finding Cure, the Fall, 4AD stuff was much easier. Less collectors of those releases. I was a “label chaser”. 4AD, Subpop, Wax Trax, etc. Dead Can Dance, Clan of Xymox, and Cocteau Twins were my favorites. A video from 4AD called Loneliness is an Eyesore, is a must. I have it on vinyl and, of all things, VHS. Clan of Xymox and Wolfgang Press had their best tracks on there. The videos were stunning.

I found the most amazing record this evening on a blind thrift store purchase (I had no clue what it was but it caught my curiosity) that is totally up your alley as far as your musical tastes go and you can pick it up for around $2 or $3 on discogs or ebay. It's called The Thought (self-titled) (1985 MCA-5559). Its kind of a mix of post punk with grindy 80s alterna-psych rock and some new wave synth elements. It's even got a cover of The Byrds - Eight Miles High in their unique style that is actually really really good. Trust me on this one, go look it up, I think you'd love it as I myself do (my musical tastes mirror yours pretty closely).
