Another cracking video! I have 'Micro Phonies' on cd...it was marked down to 99p in our local Woolworths [R.I.P.] some years ago. I also bought the reissue of 'Rust Red September' a couple of years back...double lp on white vinyl AND it was only £10 brand new. A beautiful album. My mate lent me the original lp when it came out and I recorded it onto a cassette which I played until it practically wore out. Oh,and I also have The Cabs 'Groovy,Laidback & Nasty' lp + 12'' set. Keep up the great work!

Me and my friends had the chance to see James Chance aka James White perform on multiple occasions in NYC back in the early 80’s. Max’s KC, Irving Plaza, and a tiny place called Squat which wasn’t much bigger than a small nyc apartment. I also saw John Cale at the same venue. He was always great and I still have both the “off white” and “buy” albums. He had a fantastic backing band Including Jody Harris, George Scott, and Pat Place. Thanks!

John Cale's gigs during the 70's until the mid 80's were some of the wildest and most outragous gigs ever performed by any artist. Luckely I discovered him eary 80's, and the two gigs I got to see him at that time, nobody got even close to his stage presence and unpredictable stage antics, and I've seen plenty: Iggy, Siouxsie, PIL, Echo & The Bunnymen, Stranglers, Hüsker Dü, The Fall, Gun Club, Sisters Of Mercy, Psychic TV, New Model Army, Pere Ubu, Rapeman (Steve Albini) to name some. Also saw the Cabs 1982 at the Electric Circus in London, promoting their Crackdown lp. That's all a long, long time ago, but still fond memories, and wouldn't want to miss any of them.

I went to those James White shows with the drummer of a band I know that you are fond of, “the Feelies”. He’s been a lifelong friend of mine and going back to 4th grade. We played together in bands beginning in grammar school. And he was very influential in my musical development.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert sorry Hanna, I got a couple of things wrong. I spelt your name incorrectly, plus 2x45 came after Red Mecca…it was 1982, it was a long time ago! 2x45 was their last LP to feature the great tape operator, sound manipulator, Chris Watson, who went on to work for the BBC. Also there are the fantastic 12” EPs called Three Mantras (1980) and 3 Crépescule Tracks (1981). I’m afraid neither of them have jangly guitars!

Hey Hannah. Welcome to the Eyeless in Gaza appreciation society :) certainly an acquired taste. Red Rust September is my go to. Such an original sound, so much so that I wouldn’t even attempt to describe who else they sound like. Modern Eon’s Child’s Play was a killer single when it came out (I had to have it). Passions….yes! What a band. German Film Star always makes my list of best songs from the 80s. Barbara Gogan…what a voice. Their third album Sanctuary is worth having as well. Far more polished than the previous two ( recorded at John Foxx’s Garden Studios) and features the addition of Kevin Armstrong to the band ( the album features a cover of one of songs called Love is Essential). Kevin is an artist worth tracking. If you are looking at overlooked post punk albums his first band Local Heroes SW9 released an album called Drip Dry Zone…it’s a must have. This vid really brought back some memories thank you…and enjoy the Cab Voltaire journey, it’s such an interesting ride. Cheers.

As I commented to another viewer, it seems you have two of us from Eyeless in Gaza’s home town. Must be something in the water, as they say! Some I enjoy AC Maria’s - One of Our Girls is maybe loosely post punk but a lovely record. Sure you’re familiar with Swell Maps, ramshackle but somehow melodic. Rip, Rig and Panic with Neneh Cherry (and featuring her stepfather, Don!) for a strange brew of funk, reggae, jazz, experimental. You may know them all, it’s difficult to keep up with your collection! Cheers, Wayne.

Hey there, Wayne! Glad you enjoyed the song samples I was able to include. Unfortunately I have to keep any song samples under 10 seconds or I get dinged by KZfaq. I love Swell Maps. Unfortunately I had to get rid of a newer reissue of Jane from Occupied Europe because the pressing was off center and there were pitch issues. It was so terrible. Hopefully I find a better copy at some point. Eyeless in Gaza - I am just head over heels for them! I'll have to check out Rip, Rig and Panic! New to me! Be well!

My older brother was a Fra Lippo Lippi fan before. He even saw them live here in Manila I think in 1987-88. The only cassette tape of his I have with me now is "In Silence" which I still listen too. With Cabaret Voltaire, the first record of them I bought and heard was "the Conversation" which is pure space ambient and not the post punk/industrial music one would expect. Thanks for some artists recommendations. Will try to find Modern Eon and 39 Clocks CDs/vinyl here.

So glad you got The Passions Michael and Miranda and their second album too !! and another great list, as usual. There's also this very obscure british band called Bona Dish that released a couple of cassetes in 81-82 and then disbanded. Then, several years later, there was a compilation called The Zaragoza Tapes with their whole catalogue. It's super rare, but a favorite of mine. They sounded kind of like those charming Postcard records releases, with a bit of early The Cure with female vocals ? It's unpolished and jangly in true indie fashion but very catchy. Also predates the type of sweet/sour indie pop of bands like Heavenly or Tiger Trap that got a respectable cult following in the early 90s

Hi Hannah, just sending overdue THANKS for turning me on to Eyeless in Gaza. I can't think of any other post-punk bands (or bands period, for that matter), who blended Middle Eastern themes with a new wave/pop sensibility. It's a unique sound as a result. The main guy's voice is not for everybody, but I've come to appreciate it along with every other aspect of their music. I would really recommend you and others check out the 1993 compilation Voice which surveys their music chronologically from 1980 to 1986. That was my entry to their universe after you mentioned them, and I look forward to picking up all the early albums you showed too.

Grauzone are quite popular in Europe, not only among Post Punk fans, cause their track Eisbar was a minor hit that was also played in every club during the late 90s/early 2000 (thanks to the Electroclash trend). @@TheOmahaIntrovert btw I don't know if you've heard of Altered States. They have been largely forgotten now mostly because of misfortune with the record label Ediesta and shady manager at the time their debut album Is Anyone Out There? was released in 87. They just completely flew under the radar of everyone outside London where they played to a packed out Marquee Club when they reunited in 94 or 95. IMO the most ridiculously underrated post-punk band of all, much loved by a lot of London post-punk / goth bands in the 90s especially because of Yig Hughes guitar playing.

Eyeless in Gaza! Goodness me, this takes me back. I come from a town called Nuneaton (near Coventry) which is where Eyeless in Gaza came from. Pete lived not far from me and I knew Liz (now in the band) through her brother who was a close friend. One of the things that always impressed me seeing them live was that Pete used to simultaneously play the keyboards with one hand while playing the drums with his other hand. Even though they were just a duo they had a very full sound live. My other big memory is going with Pete to see This Heat in Coventry. The guitarist Charles Bullen used to live in Nuneaton and Pete knew him. After the concert we all met up and I got to shake hands and have a chat. When you are 18 years old and you get to meet This Heat, you feel like it can get no better. Just a small note, before Eyeless in Gaza, Martyn used to play in a band called Reluctant Stereotypes. They were from Coventry, but I don’t know much else.

I would also like to recommend the 1982 Cherry Red compilation "Pillows And Prayers". It features not only Eyeless in Gaza but some other "big" names from the time. @@wayneb5742 I left England in 1987 so I had to check Google Maps. The pub where a lot of the bands used to play has now gone and seems to be part of the Lidl car park. That seems to be a fitting metaphor. For the life of me I cannot remember the pub's name. At that pub, I remember seeing Religious Overdose from Rugby(?) as well as Sea of Wires from Coventry. There was also quite a selection of Nuneaton “Ambivalent Scale” bands like Stick Insects, Bron Area and Fantaccini Playground. Fantaccini Playground were Steve Parker from Bron Area and Kevin Harrison from Urge. I remember seeing them just before they were to go on stage and the rehearsal was Steve saying “Do you want to play fast or slow?” Happy days.

@@TheOmahaIntrovert I have attached a link to a photo of myself at a This Heat concert. I am on the far right wearing glasses with my arms folded. It is posted on my old teaching website. My students were not impressed
