Hey Dude - just wanted to say A Huge Thanks for your Base Hacks series. I watched them yesterday and just changed the following settings: 1) added 4 feet to the distances of the subwoofers. 2) reduced the avr trim from - 5.5 and - 6.5 to - 11.5 for both and increased the gain from -20 to - 10. 3) increased the crossovers of the front and center speakers from 60 to 80, surrounds and rear surrounds to 90 and the elevation speakers to 100-110. My setup is: Denon X8500H 2 PB-16 Ultra subs (1 front & 1 rear) 2 Ultra towers Ultra center 2 Ultra Surrounds 2 Ultra Rear Surrounds 8 SVS Elevation speaker (3 front Heights, 2 middle left and right, 1 top and 2 rear). And its like i have a completely new system. It just blew my mind, i canmot believe how such small adjustments made such a huge difference. So a massive thank you for this. Cheers mate

I have the Denon AVR -X8500H 13.2 receiver. I used this tutorial and it totally transformed my 13.1 setup from just okay to absolutely great. I used the audyssey as my initial setup but it just did not sound like I envisioned it would, I have a Rotel and Paradigm surround sound system in another location to compare it to, I had enough of the Denon and Polk Setup sounding so bland and decided to do some research and stumbled upon this video. I can’t thank you enough on how you totally made my Denon and Polk combination sound IMAX theater like. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH😊😊😊.

I'm a newbie to the home theater scene so your video was a tremendous help and very enlightening. Your concluding #1 suggestion helped explain why my Sony STR-DN1080 would be muted on power up, and before I hear the speakers switch on. I haven't found a setting that allows me to adjust my volume level on power up but evidently the engineers at Sony work around accomplishes the same thing, and it is nice to be able to power up without a random nasty surprise "pop".

I recently tried the flat setting on my Marantz sr8012 receiver the other night and noticed it sounded better than reference. It could be just me but after switching back and forth while watching a movie it seemed like reference was too sparkly and flat reminded me of a commercial cinema sound along with setting my crossover at 100hz for my speakers.

Hey buddy that’s great stuff. My setup is pretty much at default settings because Im a complete physics and electronics noob. I will go over the tips again and try to apply the ones I think are applicable to my situation. Wanted to give you a little trick I learned in algorithms. When you have a series of possibilities (like you had the sound delay setting and how many ms of delay you should choose) and you have no idea which one is the closest to the right pick, pick the middle one. If it is good, keep it. If it is too much, your perfect number is on the left half of the series. You apply the same idea to the left half of the series (you divide the left half into two halves and you pick the middle one). By applying this concept, you can reach the right number in 2-4 attempts instead of trying out each possibility. Thanks again.

Great video. One thing I’d change: set eco mode to Auto. There is no discernible performance loss and your AVR runs much, much cooler (extending its life). With the auto setting the avr is only in eco mode when the volume is below 50%. I used to leave eco mode off but have since learned better.

Hello. I have the Denon X250BT amp with 5.1 speakers. I am trying to do a factory reset but on my amp but it just says INITIALIZED and thats it. The reason i want to reset is because the Home theater installation technician, during the initial setup, set the 2 front tower speakers to a different bass and treble setting individually and it just sounds bad. Am not sure whether the amp has some kind of secret menu or service menu to enter and make these changes. I am aware about the tone control on the Denon amp, but wanted to know wheter we can enter a menu to change the bass and treble of each speaker like the technician did. Was wondering if you have a solution for this and could please help out. Thank you.

You have a good voice for describing which makes it easier to absorb what you are explaining. One important issue I've encountered is I like listening to my music at one level say 20, and playing by movies at a different level say 40. Question: can we program the Denon 960 to automatically play at certain levels each time for each various sound mode levels? Your feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers

Thanks for sharing this video. I have a pretty similar set up in my marantz SR6010 but the question that I have for you is how does the Channel level setting works when you press info button in your remote? Is this extra power? My point is that in my level menu I have 2db for my front left and 2.5 in my center but when I press the info button in my remote the channel level setting is 9dbs for my fronts and 8db in the center..... I don’t understand why having 2 different levels ? Your opinion ?

Hi , Thanks for all your videos and sound advice. On your recommendation I recently bought a used Denon avr x4000 with the xt32 audyssey. I have a few questions regarding my dual subs which are svs pb 2000. Should I do your recommended sub hacks after running audyssey such as the punchier bass hack? Sorry, Maybe that's obvious . And the x4000 has dual separate sub outputs but before running audyssey should I use a Y connecter to connect both subs and just use the number 1 sub output? If your too busy, I'm ok with any advice from others too.

What is the difference in sound between setting avr gain to 0 and increasing gain on the sub amp Vs setting avr to -11 and turning up gain. I would think that setting avr higher would allow for gain to be more sensitive/exacerbated on the sub amp gain. Not sure if I'm asking that correctly.

Hello may I ask you a question ? If i wanted to set up my system sound manually because Audyssey gets it wrong then how do i enter the Speaker Distances measurements into Audyssey? Do I actually run Audyssey first and then go under Manual setting /Distances and undo what Audyssey has listed and enter my own? I thought part of the purpose of having Audyssey do it was because it also included the Delay accourding to the distance of each speaker, so if you go in and undo it wont that cancel out the delay that goes with the distance for each speaker that Audyssey measured ? If you measure your speaker distances manually i dont know what to do with the measurement i guess is what im asking . Thank you

I did a video about that, "the speaker level hack". If one speaker is 12 ft away, and the other speaker is 6 ft away, the speaker that is 6 ft away should have a lower decibel measurement. So even though the meter reads the exact same decibel, the closer speaker will be overpowering.

Hey there, about crossover frequencies where you talked about cut off HZ value for subs.. That setting seem a bit stupid and not worthy writing a single line of code...BUT, I was thinking and it just might be useful if for example you have 4 subs and set each one at a higher frequency- 40,70,100,120...depending on their position and the size of the driver, whether it's sealed or reflex...

I am having an issue that I am very confused about and need some help. The volume is very weak and the subwoofers along with the speaker craft speakers which are not putting out like they used to. What I have found out is that, when I turn on the Dynamic volume to heavy it helps with the volume but the Subwoofers are is still barely working. With the Dynamic Volume turned to OFF, I have to turn the Main Volume up to almost 60% to 65% to obtain the same output as when I turn the Dynamic volume ON, at 25%. But there is no difference in the subwoofers performance. I have run Audyssey several times trying figure this out. I am literally confused about what has happened do you have any recommendations I am thinking that my A/V receiver could be wearing out, but there might be something I am overlooking.

I believe some Denon AVRs ship with "Tone control" active and turned on with bass and treble jacked way up. This setting can only be accessed by hitting the "option" button on the remote. I had actually never even used it until recently because I always use the menu to get into settings and tone control is nowhere to be found in the normal settings so I wasn't even aware it existed. The tone control option is essentially hidden under the option button on the remote, as that is the only way to access it. After years of owning my AVR I just discovered yesterday that tone control was active and I have been running with treble +6 and bass +2 without even realizing it. I've always thought this AVR sounded bright and now that mystery is solved after disabling tone control. If you own a Denon definitely make sure you're not unintentionally running with tone control active.

90 hertz for the front stage, 120 hertz for the small surrounds, which are the Elevations. If you're running the Ultra Surrounds, you can go with 90 hertz on those, since they have bigger drivers. That's probably what I would set them at. It might seem a bit high, but pretty much any speaker in my system is going to be crossed at least 90 hertz.

I have a Marantz A/V receiver Model# SR6006, 100 watts per channel, 7.1 Surround system I bought this unit 8 years ago brand new.

Hi. Thank you for the video. I set my woofer on 120 hz. My central start at 40 hz and set it on 80 hz. The frontal speakers start at 65 hz and set it on 100 hz. I would have mid bass and soft bass from front. Deep bass are for the woofer. Is that correct or I have to set front on 110,120....?

Whatever you set your speakers to, that is the limitation for the subs. I usually have a minimum of 90 hertz for any speaker, and the smaller the speaker, the higher I run the crossover. Even if it does nothing, I set the crossover on the subwoofer at the highest setting (250 hertz) effectively disabling any filtering, so is you wanted to experiment with a high crossover, like 200 hertz, the chance of that being filtered is lower.

I have both the 4K TV LG C2 and 4K Denon AVR-S760H with E-ARC. I don't know which is best to use as a hub the TV or the ARV, to connect 4K blu ray and 4K firestick. I have the TV on furniture so you wont see the wires if I connect component to it, but some people would have the TV on a wall and it would be nice to only run one E-ARC HDMI so in this case they would connect everything to the AVR. Which HUD would produce the best video and sound.

Love you videos. Finally starting to feel like I understand how to correctly setup my AVR. I also have a several Denon AVRs. I have a question that you might be able to help with... If I run the room configuration setup using the Audyssey, it wants to set me front speakers to "large" with crossovers around 40 Hz. After I run that, if I go into the manual settings and change the speaker size and crossovers, how do I know it's using the Manual settings as opposed to the Audyssey? Do you control that by selecting Reference vs Flat in the Audio->Audyssey->MultEQ XT? Sorry if the question is rudimentary but trying to ensure I don't misunderstand a setting and fail to get the best sound quality I can. Also, I have my front speakers on bi-amp - the speakers support it. Is there any reason not to use that setup with a 5.1 system? Thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge and setup. It's much appreciated.

It really depends on the model of AVR. If it has a separate distance for each subwoofer, 4 feet over room correction value for each sub should work. If you only have a single distance value for both subs, I would try to put them both up front, run room correction again, and add 4 feet to the subwoofer distance value. Which subs are you using?

No crossover at all, and speakers set to large. Crossover and speaker settings, as in large or small, that is for the presence of a subwoofer only. If you remove the subwoofer on the menus, it should just do that for you automatically. It's worth considering dual subs, especially from my list of subwoofers. Adds a very dynamic dimension to the sound overall.

Buy the multiEQ app. Calibrate with that and then set up a house curve with continuously rising bass slope from 80hz down to 20hz. This will give you back the missing kick and slam from your speakers. Also experiment with LFE+main setting and setting the towers to large if you have good amp power.

Waymon, as much as I like a heavy bass tone, I think turning the sub gain that high would be excessive. I'd stick with -11.5 on the AVR, and between -10 and -16 on the PB-2000 Pro's. These are pretty potent and I imagine the bass would be to heavy at -1 through -9 on the subwoofer gain. And we are talking about lipsync delay, to get the sound in time with the video. Lastly, sometimes I miss the replies, so if you start an original comment, I'm more likely to see it. It's the way KZfaq is set up, I miss a lot of comments because of that.

Hey Subwoofer 101, I Really Got A Problem??? Don't Know If You Could Or Not, But I'm Going To Ask Away .... How Do I Fix Or Is Capable Of Being Fix, Protect Mode On My Denon AVRX6700H??? I Unplugged Everything And Put It In Another Outlet And Room, Came On Like Regular Without The Issue! But I Don't Know When I Connect Everything Back, What's Going To Happen Again????
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 ай бұрын
Your outlet might be the problem, too much or too little voltage, or you could have had a stray copper "whisker" that shorted between the speaker terminals on one of your speakers. The copper whisker thing could be at the AVR, at the speaker, or somewhere in between. If you don't find something obvious, you can use a multi meter, disconnect both ends of the speaker cable, and test for continuity (the beeping function) between the positive and negative cables. If the speaker cable is disconnected at both ends, there should be no continuity between positive and negative. Are you using banana plugs? That would probably be less likely to be problematic than bare wire. If you had bare wire speaker cables at the AVR, simply disconnecting them could have solved the problem, if it was a stray copper whisker. Those are just my ideas, by no means exhaustive. If you are uncomfortable with anything I suggested, don't do it. In that case, or if you can't identify the issue, call Denon. It's a good thing that it went back to normal after switching to another outlet. I've had an AVR totally brick on me. No clue why yet. The fact that yours got out of protection mode is a good thing. One last thing is that it could be a wire inside of a speaker itself. You can test your speakers for resistance, and if you have one that is a lot lower than the other speakers, that could definitely be your problem. I hope you get it figured out, that's a nice AVR. Since it went back to normal after protection mode suggests that the problem *might* not be in the AVR itself. Hopefully it's something simple.

I Truly Am Grateful You Responded!!!! Yes I Do Have Banana Plugs For My Speakers. I Hope It's Not The Speakers Themselves Cause That Could Be A Task Within Itself. @Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 7 ай бұрын
@michaelburton5198 It's probably not in the speakers, that's more of a long shot but still a possibility. Biggest thing is if you see a drastic difference in resistance from 1 speaker compared to the rest. Even then, I would imagine it being a shorted voice coil rather than a stray wire inside the speaker itself, but anything is possible. Test tones are a good idea to rule out good speakers and connections. Glad to respond, not sure how helpful it will ultimately be, but I hope it's resolved soon. After calibration. If you have a good sub, it will have a delay because of the DSP, which adds to the physical distance during calibration. So 10.1 might calibrate as 12.8 or 13.2 or something like that. Whatever the value, add 3-4 feet to that.

Best thing to do if you are using a full surround setup is to get the Eagles Farewell 1 Tour on Blu Ray. I know that's very specific, but once you have DTS Master on for sure (showing up on your AVR), the mix is VERY good for letting your ears figure out what the levels should be. No single speaker should stand out or be hard to hear. Doing it with movies, basic music, or even that same concert on Amazon Prime is not as good. Definitely see the Speaker Leve Hack for more information about it. Thanks for watching!

I would probably set them as small, cross them at 90 hertz, turn the tower subs down to nothing, turn the SVS subs up to as high as you can without them sounding overdone, then try to dial up the tower subs a little at a time. You might be able to get some benefit, or you might be better off leaving them turned down. Trust your ears above all else. I imagine you will be able to get some positive benefit from the tower subs, but I would have the dedicated subs handle the majority of the bottom end duties. Room EQ Wizard is a good idea to verify that you aren't introducing any serious peaks or cancellations.
