This week I'm talking about three (actually four) of my absolute favourite beginner-level gardening and permaculture books that I still reference constantly.
Links to stuff I mentioned (I get a small commission if you use my links):
The Suburban Micro-Farm: amzn.to/43kOKTp
Gaia’s Garden: amzn.to/45MY2sN
Veg in One Bed: amzn.to/3IWsk2N
Permaculture for the Rest of Us: amzn.to/3Nmmb2x

Fall is here, and that means that we're coming up on garden planning season! If you spent the summer scrolling enviously through everyone's beautiful gardens, it's time to plan your own. Fall and winter is the time to dive deep into the reading material and break out the planning journal so that you can have the best garden possible next season.

Hi! I’m Laura. Welcome to my tiny suburban garden in zone 8b. I'm on a mission to transform our suburban lot from plain grass to an urban permaculture paradise. I share gardening vlogs and videos about suburban permaculture gardening.

Thanks for the book recommendations. The book that inspired my start to gardening was Betty Crocker’s Kitchen Gardens. The illustrations in the book are so beautiful.

I've read the suburban micro gardening and I own Gaia's Garden which I love so much. I also really like "The year round vegetable garden" and "Fruit Trees for Every Garden" by Orin Martin , he is all about regenerative orchards and goes really in depth about how to care for fruit trees. Best fruit tree book I have found and I have read atleast a dozen.

Thank you for the thorough book reviews! I really appreciated the personal touch of what each book helped you with. I'll also share that I borrowed Gardening with Native Plants of the Pacific Northwest: An Illustrated Guide by Arthur R. Kruckeberg from a library and it's been so incredibly useful and informative that it's now on my Christmas list! As you're also in Southwest BC, I highly recommend checking it out, if you can find a copy, or requesting an Interlibrary Loan if you can't. Thanks again for sharing!

I'll check it out thanks! I have a ton of books on native plants (my favourite is Plants of Coastal BC by Pojar and McKinnon. Another great one is Edible and Medicinal plants of Canada. Just wanted to keep this list short and veggie-growing specific :)

Three out of four, yay (I'm allergic to Huw, sorry 🤣😂🤣 - It's the more perfect than perfect vibe....) I Think I started out with "Food not Lawns" and went totally crazy after that and bought Dave Jacke's "Edible Forest Garden" (both...) and "Creating a Forest Garden" by Martin Crawford and then everything I could find by him and by Eric Toensmeier (except the carbon farming). And I'm now addicted to all things permaculture and food forest. Our library has nothing on that topic, just the usual flower border stuff and conventional vegetable gardening... 🙄

That's a great list of books! Edible forest gardens is a real gem. I love how with the internet there are so many different people to learn from so we can avoid the ones we're allergic to 😅

Sorry I don't know since I live and garden in the PNW. I would suggest finding gardeners in your area and asking them 🙂
