6:57 I this this is the key for most of the people. Capacities just works as it should with its own magic, without any kind of crazy DataView queries, Classes and Yaml metadata you need to think of or remember to build what you want in Obsidian, for example.

Hi Beth, thank you for your very informative content. I’m an academic that has been searching for a good pkm/second brain app to structure all sorts of reading notes on different topics, theories, books etc, thoughts, drafts of articles and so on. I just found capacities, as well as reflect app. Both look very promising but I can’t decide between the two. I like the folder + backlinks functionality of capacities, but I also love reflects web clipping tool and the fact that their map view shows all notes, not just whatever is embedded in an object as is the case in capacities as far as I understand, Do you have any insight on how these two apps compare for academic work? Obviously you are a capacities pro, but I’m wondering if you have insight on reflect as well?

Hi, thanks for your comment! So Reflect is further on in its development than Capacities so if you need the webclipper functionality now then it might be the better option, as Capacities' is planned but not here yet. However Reflect is an outliner, and that is limiting in my academic experience. I used Logseq before Capacities and I got irritated by how I couldn't use the whole page and that all of my permanent notes had to be linear. I think for long term, ever-evolving notes like those on topics/theories etc, it's great to be able to use columns, insert images and nicely formatted links etc. Long form writing is easier outsider of an outliner too. Finally on the graph view- depends how often you use it if I want to see the whole graph, I just export my Capacities space to markdown and open it in Logseq/Obsidian for free and view the whole graph there. Sorry that's so long, hope it helps in some way!

Thank you so much@@PKM_Beth. This is exactly the type of insight I was looking for. Capacities it is then :)

@@PKM_Beth hi Beth! I love your chanel! Could u please, maybe, make a step by step how to export the capacities space to see the whole graph? I didn't quite understand how to do that. Thank you!❤️

Beth, 1. how is an object type different than a template in Obsidian? Both have predefined attributes and you can create new entries based on the structure? 2. Why use collections when you can achieve the same exact thing with a tag? Thanks!
@PKM_Beth
@PKM_Beth 13 күн бұрын
Object types have a lot of flexibility, from the properties applied, to the page layout, to the default way your links to an object of that type look (e.g. always embed quotes as small cards). I find this a much fuller approach to thinking in types and it's what sold me on Capacities in 2022. I found obsidian templates just looked after the words on the page, rather than how that page looks/how I interact with it elsewhere. It's been a long time since I played with Obsidian templates though, so that may have changed! I think there's real value in creating subgroups of objects (e.g all English kings, all French people) and it's easier to maintain them than having 500 tags, because they're already sorted by object type. If collections help you dive deeper, tags let you bring things together from anywhere. I enjoy the separation in use cases, but that doesn't mean everyone will.

I agree with you about aesthetics. I am a very visual person. I currently use Logseq for my notes, but it does not inspire me visually. I am playing around with capacities, and it's hard to jump as I have used Logseq for a long time (several years). My most immense fear/anxiety is building a new system, but your videos are helping. Do you still use Logseq or similar, or what other apps do you use with or around Capacities?

I used both Logseq and Capacities during my short-lived Masters, as I used the PDF annotation in Logseq. But Capacities just makes so much sense to me that other apps became less interesting in comparison. I'm currently using it for pretty much everything. But I do quick capture in Apple notes, bookmarks in Raindrop, lists in Twos. But I spend the vast majority of my day at home in Capacities :)

All the so-called Capacities features exist in other apps. Note-taking apps are commodities.

Hey! I'm pretty sure you don't use obsidian anymore, but if you did the "created date" is actually within the file itself. I'm a programmer, and I love your content, so I would totally help you out. BUT I'm pretty sure you primarily use Notion and Capacities now, so it might be an irrelevant offer 😅

… that… makes total sense! I am just using notion and capacities now but thank you so much for the offer! Really appreciate it :)

I'm so confused. Tonight I started playing with the app and was in love UNTIL .... 1. my data disappeared from a page without warning and there seems to be no way to get it back and 2. The app doesn't support multiple image upload? I have to upload one image at a time? I'm so confused! I've contacted support and hoping to hear back.
@PKM_Beth
@PKM_Beth 7 ай бұрын
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that, I've never had that before. Were you working in multiple windows? You can upload multiple images at once through the command bar (docs.capacities.io/reference/search).

Thank you! I was just working in one page, rearranging and organizing things. Data just disappeared. Tried undo button didn't help. Very odd. Revert to previous version would be helpful in this case. Is there no trash bin feature? I don't see any reference to restoring or trash bins or anything. I did figure how to add multiple images finally. Thanks!
