Hi Kevin. Relatively new pipe smoker here and I've been really enjoying your videos lately. I remember one of the first times I ever set foot in a tobacco store I spent probably 30 minutes looking at all the different tins and couldn't make up my mind what to buy. Finally the tobacconist came over and said why not try this - it was Peterson nightcap. Still one of my favorite blends a couple years into the hobby. I'm looking forward to trying Capstan Blue based on your recommendation. I'd love to see you put together a video with some of your top English blend recommendations.

Nice list, Kevin. Apart from Cornell & Diehl, which is impossible to get in Europe, all of your other picks are on my wishlist and I'm really looking forward to trying them out one day. My current Top 5 Virginia blends (not in particular order) right now has: - Rattray's Old Gowrie - Rattray's Marlin Flake - Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake - Samuel Gawith Irish Spring Flake - Peterson Sherlock Holmes Only one straight VA, but the other ones are definitely VA forward. Of course, this list will most likely change over time as I try out more and more blends.

I've been getting really into pure Virginia blends this summer, since I pretty definitively determined that any amount of Burley or Perique gives me a scratchy throat and a bit of a cough for a day or two after smoking, but thankfully there are quite a few pure Virginias I really enjoy! So, here's my current Top 5 favorite pure Virginias in no particular order: Sutliff 507C Virginia Slices - Bright, grassy, and the most strongly lemony citrus tasting Virginia I've had! Even moreso than Orlik Golden Sliced or Capstan Gold! Mac Baren HH Pure Virginia - A darker yet very mellow Virginia with a very prominent bready note. Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake - A little bit troublesome to rub out and dry enough to smoke, but the strong green/black tea note is worth the trouble! I like to have this one anytime I'm sipping a cup of tea. G.L. Pease Union Square - The darkest, earthiest pure Virginia blend I've tried with a really pleasant leaf litter note that always reminds me of the autumn. There's a bit of bright Virginia in there too, but it's mostly dark earthy red Virginia. A great cold weather smoke! Cornell & Diehl Yorktown - A supremely convenient rarity among Virginias in that it comes in a ribbon cut and fully dry straight out of the tin, meaning there's no need to rub out flakes or give it any dry time at all before smoking; just pack and go! Flavor wise it's very similar to Union Square, but with more grassy, citrusy, hay-like bright Virginias to balance out the dark, earthy, bready, autumn leaf litter'y red Virginias. A full spectrum Virginia blend that feels perfect for every occasion!

just found your site. I used to smoke a lot of Dunhill G.L Pease and Frog Morton. My favorite is Virginia of any kind. But i like like Latakia as well. My favorite Dunhills were Royal yacht, early morning and dark flake. Pease- Westminster and gaslight. I got in on frog Morton shortly before they went under. Frog was very special.

Great top 5 list you have there! I’ll have to give Manhattan Afternoon a shot. I’ve been spending some time with Cornell and Diehl Interlude and really enjoying it. Love OGS as well and goes great with a glass of iced tea!

Great and informative video, thanks! I want to get back to smoking my pipe again, because I basically stopped smoking it when my main tobacco store here in N. Alabama went out of business many years ago. I would always get a Maple flavored tobacco which was wet, and a Vanilla flavored tobacco which was very dry. The two mixed together produced such a wonderful aroma, I would have people who weren't even smokers, compliment the smell. I have never been able to find those two brands again, simply because there was never any brand names on the Ziploc bags that they were placed in. I would order 2 ounces of each type, and they would retrieve the tobacco out of large glass jars that had rubber seals and a clasp on them, weigh out the specified amount, and place the purchased tobacco in the Ziploc bags. The place was called Tobacco Road in Decatur, Alabama. It had been located in this city around 30+ years, and then just shut it's doors one day out of the blue. Any tips or suggestions on finding something similar to what I've stated above, would be greatly appreciated. It would be even better if there was a place within a 60 mile radius that might have it. I don't mind ordering online if I need to, it's just always nice to be able to smell it or try it on the spot. Thanks for the info, and thanks to anyone/everyone who has any suggestions. Cheers

I would agree with you on your first two choices. I love Capstan Blue, and OGS. I also like Erinmore flake,.and Mac Baren Navy Flake.

I like all of these as well, however my every day smoke is Bayou Morning year round and mostly English styles during the colder months for the most part. I throw in a few semi aromatics around Christmas mostly because of guests. This year it's Cringle Flake. From one Kevin to another Merry Christmas to you and your family.

As a novice i dont have much experience in general but i do enjoy orlik golden sliced and castan gold probably slightly more. I have tin if blue but i want to save it for a first tasting video dedicated to yours truly that i want to film in a spot where tolkien spun up his tales at.

I actually didn’t like Virginia blends initially. However I then tried them in a cob pipe and that made a world of difference. Going to pick up some capstan gold tonight and give that a try

I have really been enjoying Peter Stokkebye's luxury twist flake all summer and fall. I too, usually slow my Virginia intake in the winter, but this one is always in my rotation.

Another great “Top Five” video. I have and enjoy 4 out of your 5 on a weekly basis. That said as you know I am on “old codger tobacco person.” Virginia’s will not replace Carter Hall, Velvet, Granger, Prince Albert, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc. You got my drift. Merry Christmas 🎄 to you and yours. 💨💨

Hi there 😊..one Virginia that I like is Klondike Gold legend..I find its really nice...of course with a bit of age it's nice..smooth retro hail is good , sweet hay notes like after it's cut for me no tongue bite..just a good all day smoke ..thanks for sharing..

another entertaining video Kevin, thanks! I guessed your top one before I even started the show, LOL. I just popped open a tin of EMP that I bought because of your review and have to say it is way better than I expected after some other reviews. I've ordered some Capstan gold as well as blue. So far my top virginia is Peter S Lux Navy Flake, with OGS right in second place, third Lux Bullseye Flake. Can't wait to see if the Capstans change my order of things, don't have them yet. I've tried Petersons Elizabethan and have to say I just didn't get it happening there at all. As an aside I saw a video where an older guy said something about Capstan green, so I thought lets see what thats about then later determined he mixed yellow and blue to make green and thats what he liked. Good for a laugh though! may have to try it.

Four of the five I’ve had are in my tops too. Haven’t tried Manhattan Afternoon. My favorite bulk Virginias are C&D Virginia Flake (it’s a broken flake), Sutliff Virginia Slices and 515 and TCS Green Dragon.

McClellands' sure were special... I still have a tin of Blackwoods and a tin of nº24, which were my favorites. Saving them for some special ocasions. From the available today, my favorite probably is BBF. Cool video. Cheers

Good choices. All excellent. As a Brit, I grew up smoking Germain's Brown Flake and Samuel Gawith's. I would say those are my two absolute favourite VA flakes -- like you said it's a personal thing. I can't get them though... so I make do with HH Pure VA and Wessex curly block. All the best for the holidays Kevin and happy smokes!

Great video! Man I sure do miss McClelland, they forever changed my perception of VA's. I've got one bowl left of blackwood's flake that I've been hoarding for the right moment as well as a few bowls of Xmas cheer 2013. I've got a full tin of the 40th anniversaries as well as a tin of a numbered Virginia that I can't remember right now. I've bought a few tins if the different Wessex Virginia's to try as well as the Mac barren pure Virginia, and I'm hoping to get just a taste of that McClelland flavor that I miss, but I'll probably be a bit disappointed.

I agree Capstan blue is also my favorite Virginia. Question about cellaring. I already love Capstan blue. If I cellar it for a year or longer, would I enjoy it even more, or is cellaring meant to mellow tobaccos you aren’t fond of fresh they need the time to mellow in the cellar??

BTW, any thoughts on C&D Caroline Red Flake. Slightly less sweet that M/A. Just purchased CRF with Perique but haven't broke it out yet. Looking forward to sampling that one soon. Great video! I am just branching into "Virginia Only" blends and I haven't gotten around to trying many yet. I started out with Virginia & Perique/Burley blends relatively recently. That said, I do like Yorktown. Yorktown and Union Square are both easy to get and delicious. Maybe by next year's video I'll have tried more and can elaborate more 😎 There's not enough smoke time in the day to try all this tobacco
