Luckily for me I told my husband that I was going keto and that I was cooking keto and if he wanted something different he'd have to make it himself. Well, he jumped on board, lost 30 lbs and got off metformin. He's thrilled. That was 4 yrs ago and we are still keto.

4 months and I’m down 39 pounds. This is definitely for life for me. I’m lucky that I didn’t have “keto flu” and for whatever reason I’m not bothered by all the bad food in the house. I cook everyday for my husband and he’s definitely nowhere close to keto. I prepared for low carb snacking but I’ve never cared about it. For me, this is the best thing I’ve ever done for myself. I’m 52 and I feel better than ever.

8:55 “When was the last time this didn’t hurt?” Steve, I’m rolling some tears of empathetic joy as I heard this! Four weeks into my journey I asked the same question. At 62 and 313# I had begun to feel physically, mentally and emotionally dead, a zombie. Not suicidal but purposeless, even spiritually somewhat. Bad news when you minister full time in a group foster home. Doc sent me to a nutritionist. We needed to lower glucose anyway due to pre-diabetes symptoms so she steered me towards more of a keto approach. Week3-4, I was nearly childlike in my exuberance. I’d shed 20 pounds and found myself needing to sprint down a church hallway to join worship team on closing songs. I didn’t seize up and die! Now I’m jogging 3-4 days per week. I’m gonna live! Videos from you and some others have helped me find my path. Thanks so much!

While this video is about my decision to "go keto", many of the lessons learned are applicable for any dietary lifestyle change. For those of you hoping to see a more dramatic weight loss due to keto, let me say this: I chose keto as a LONG TERM dietary lifestyle rather than as a "quick fix, fad diet" (as the keto detractors often call it). I could have lost more weight more quickly had I been STRICT keto, but my goal was to eat the way I planned to eat potentially for the rest of my life. My keto is a little lazy and a little dirty, but it worked for me. I never felt deprived. Some of my advice in this and the next video is more "do as I say, not as I do" if you want to lose weight more rapidly than I did. If you're less concerned about the speed at which you lose weight, then be you can be a little lazy and a little dirty with your keto.

I like your approach to this. I think of it as being as healthy as possible and I'm generally a lazy person outside of work, and it seems to be working for me! My thoughts are very similar to yours. I'm in this for the health benefits, not really the weight loss, because as I feel better, my weight will stabilize and decrease as I adjust! Thank you for your thoughtful videos. I'm learning a lot. Your channel gets me excited about new ways to cook keto meals and discover what works! Keep up the excellent work, sir!

What a great video!!! My doctors exact words to me were, "I don't want to know what you are doing, but whatever you are doing, keep doing it.". He then laughed because he knows I am keto and he is anti-keto.

My doc is probably close to 100 lbs overweight. He knows I'm doing keto, and has said "I need to do what you're doing", but I can tell that he feels incongruent about it. Despite all the obvious physical indicators, he can't bring himself to say "keto seems to be the right thing" and do it himself.

"It's a lifestyle not a diet" that's pretty much it for me. When people ask (and many have in the past) of how I can maintain my 'diet' for so long (three years now of not eating steamed rice, potatoes, pastas, white bread and believe me as a carb lover that's tough). I just tell them because it's not a 'diet'...it's a changed meal plan. I know many diabetics still eat lots of carbs regardless of their condition, my wife asked me how I made the switch almost immediately from eating lots of carbs to limiting only 70 grams/day (I never went keto as i was losing weight too fast). My answer was I simply feel better now than ever. Knock on wood I don't get sick much, if I did, it'll be just maybe 1-2 days of resting, a couple cold/flu meds and I'm back to 100%. I do eat more carbs especially when going out, but I limit it to say...1-2 bites of cakes or a no-sugar latte..maybe a half slice of sourdough once a month or so..During my worst diabetes, I got sick almost every month...and pretty often ended up having to use antibiotics for sore throat, etc. So my mind knows that as long as I stay off those refined carbs, I'll have a better daily life. Besides doing low carb nowadays in my opinion is much easier than say 5-10 years ago since we have all variety of low carb stuff. I happen to live in Asia where even two years ago it was difficult to find good stevia or erythritol, but now I've found at least a couple stores near my house not including online shops...so it's definitely easier for me to make my desserts (one of my guilty pleasures..).

The thing I did when starting keto (now 1.5 years keto) that was not really necessary was to focus on getting more fat (because of the hyper focus on fat vs. carbs doing keto) by adding things like sour cream to things, etc. You are best just getting your fat via what some call "naked" fat. That is eating the fat that comes with your steak, etc. No real need to go nuts on the fat adding aspect. Sure, put butter on your veggies, add olive oil to your salad, eat the skin on chicken, etc. but most people are going to get enough fat just eating keto foods. Just keep your net carbs < 20 and the rest falls in line as regards macros. The whole macro thing with keto is overdone IMO.

mathfaster I agree 100%. Some say they didn't lose weight till tracking Macro's. I didn't lose till I stopped tracking and just ate my dirty keto foods till I was comfortably full each meal. Then the weight started shedding off!

I was extremely irritated by people noticing my weight loss and asking me how I did it. I am and always have been the same person. They also ask me all the time if I am still on that weird diet lol. I basically say it isn’t a diet and it is for life so they don’t need to ask anymore. I gave up the scale because that number to me is irrelevant and many concentrate on that number instead of seeing all the other amazing benefits being in ketosis gives. Glucose and ketones are also important to me and I also check regularly with the keto mojo. Fasting got my weight off and keto keeps it off :) I am like you and get irritated also watching others eat tons of carbs. I don’t break keto for any reason and have done that since I started a couple years ago. This is the way I live and I love it. Thanks for sharing your journey.

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's back in April of 2016. A LOT of information I came across while researching the condition basically said, take the medicine and deal with the fatigue, brain fog, achey joints, intestinal issues etc. I couldn't accept this. I dug deeper and came up with the keto/low carb way of eating (although Paleo is better, I like cheese too). Since my thyroid NEEDS carbs to make T3, which is the precursor of T4, I allow my self 60g of carbs a day. I function at my best with this level. Considering the SAD diet consists of 250g to 350g a day, 60g isn't all that bad. Your channel has been another tool that has offered me some wonderful help in my health journey and I'm REALLY looking forward to the day when you announce you've written your first cookbook. Then I'll have Serious Keto at the my fingertips everyday. Until then, thanks for the vids and for the information, Knowledge is power in this fight for our lives. :-) PS: After learning to read labels, I don't get irritated watching my spouse eat the SAD diet and all the carbs, I just can't do that to my body anymore.

I'm so glad my wife has joined me on the journey. She cleaned out our pantry, she tries new KETO recipes, and just does a lot of cooking to keep KETO foods in the fridge and freezer ready to eat. When we are out and about I also notice all the junk people are eating, like people lined up at the fast food drive throughs, and all the sugars and carbs in peoples shopping carts. There are many KETO Foods that I like just as much or even more than the things I used to eat. I do miss some of those things but not enough to go back.

I have been keto for a long time and am now carnivore (I consider this to be on the extreme end of keto, but still keto). There are times that I break my keto lifestyle. I never call it "cheating." Cheating is inaccurate. Breaking your way of eating for a day or two, or even a week, is normal. I loved what Mark Sisson said: life happens; occasions occur; you have holiDAYS not holiMONTHS. This is a way of life not a punishment. Keto is the easiest way of eating and the most forgiving when you do break from it. The omnivorous version, like most people, is so decadent and delicious, that it isn't hard to go back after a break. Funny...I remember what you said about the Atkins diet from 20 years ago--THAT was hard because we didn't have all of the options then that we do today. Can't wait for tomorrow's video.

I’ve been doing Keto since 1.1.22 which is my 3rd time around. The difference this time is that I’m now not calling it a “diet.” I was 386 pounds when i weighed 12.31.21 and told myself if this doesn’t work this time, I’ll have a surgery. Within a few weeks I figured out to be successful this had to be a lifestyle change. I’ve heard those words before but for some reason, they now made sense. Since 1.1.22, I no longer have back pain, knee pain, the need to lean over a buggy while shopping in Walmart, the need to find a seat and take a break (hard to do since the Mexican beer novelty), the need to sit at a stool to wash dishes, or the need to sit down and take breaks after walking to my classroom in the mornings. The Carb Manager app actually saved me & kept me from giving up. I started my Keto journey in October with minimal results & was going to stop. I got the app & realized I was consuming hidden carbs & those carbs were in my coffee! My favorite coffee (DD french vanilla) was 5 grams of carbs per cup. I was drinking 3 cups a day. So I was blowing my 20g’s by lunch. Since then, I often use the app to check my food & beverage choices before I even buy or prepare them. So I restarted in early November & feeling great. Thanks Steve for sharing, as always & Happy New Year to you & yours.

I'm glad to hear you did some extended fasts. Another benefit of extended fasting (at least for me) is that even for foods that you do enjoy, you do tend to get "sick" of eating them much quicker, which makes it easier to stop eating them. Like, I'll enjoy the first few bites, but my desire to keep eating that food drops far quicker than it used to. This actually sticks even if you eat carbs, I found out recently. My wife and I were invited to a wedding and certainly the food there wasn't keto. I was able to stop eating despite the food having a large amount of carbs. I wouldnt recommend doing that, since I did put on about 10 lbs of water weight, but since I was doing fasting primarily, I just fasted for 5 days to undo all the damage. I still lost weight despite all the stuff I ate.

Without that you will fail. Make a grocery list. Chop, prep, plan a menu if that’s you. You’ll have more success if you are ready! When you’re hungry you grab something made. Quick. But if you have veggies prepped dips made roasted chicken in the fridge etc you’ll be able to eat keto. Also I did get Mark Sissons 21 day keto reset. Dr mercolas fat for fuel. Mark Hyman eat fat get thin. Finding Steve also helped a lot!!!! I’m obsessed now lol. Happy New You Year!!! Change “should “into “must!! Change “push into pull”. I'm so glad I just discovered your channel, Steve. You are a fascinating personality. I've been on the same journey with lots of similar experience. I would say 80% of my success was due to psychological work. Asking questions like you did. For me it was a process of becoming a grown up (I'm 63!) person. Thank you for sharing your transition. And a happy new year!

I know I commented on one of your other videos recently but this sounds a lot like what I did around my dietary changes. My family thought I was sick due to the weight loss and took them a good year or so before they believed I was still healthy - never mind I was working and exercising without any change! It's a real shame you watch people you love eating carby/sugary things you know are bad for you and then they complain about pain from inflammation - knowing you can help but they don't believe you :( Keep up the great channel - real world person, just like the majority of us doing what he feels best doing!

Magnificent series Steve. You are the inspiration for many of us. This series was what I was waiting for, I'm now doing the 2 weeks of potatoes and follow up with fresh salads; the Penn / Steve diet. You are making a difference in at least one person, me and I would call you very successful. My wife is very pleased, she has also been doing Steve's Keto and getting the results she wants. Success for both of us.

Not sure I had posted in one of the previous videos, but I went from 244.4, to 156.6lbs. January 15th will mark 1 year since I started. I myself am in maintenance mode as well, so I vary between 156 and 160, depending on the day of the week. (87.8lbs at my lightest.) I've been at this weight for several months now, but I have loosened up as well too. I still don't eat breads, sugars of starches, but I will indulge in more of the foods I am allowed to eat. Rebel Ice Cream visits me once in a while, as well indulging too much in Costco's Kirkland Brand Protein Bars.

Loved this video. I saw the same issue with my joints too. I noticed my knuckles cracked, all of them with no pain or resistance. That was the 2nd noticible change, the first was my belly going down so flat! I also fight my body builder husband's theory of eating all day small meals, eat carbs and he hates the fats I am eating. My kitchen is full of the temptations and he insists on not assisting me too. So the struggle is real! 34 lbs down since August is not bad given the disagreement with my diet and his. Keep your videos coming!!

My biggest struggles on keto are tracking my macros and meal planning. I work full time, I'm a Mom full time and a Wife full time. I really only have the weekends free and I find myself wanting to relax more than having to buy groceries and cook all weekend. My son and I are on the keto journey together and I know that if I don't cook we don't eat. I am burned out after being on keto since June 1, 2019 even though my son has lost almost 50 lbs. and I am almost at a 40 lb. loss. Steve - this is why your channel is so important to me and people like me. I need inspiration and I need new ways to cook food that tastes good and that will keep my son and I on this journey without being tempted to cheat. We look at this like a lifestyle change and hopefully one that will last a lifetime. Thank you for all that you do and for the tremendous inspiration that you have given to us!!

I think you were right, if you look at how you are eating as a diet, it's not the way you should be eating. I couldn't do keto, at least, I don't think I could. I love certain carbs. I'm not big into bread and pasta but I do like it on occasion. I had my brother for 3 days and my grandchildren for 2 days and so I did buy a loaf of bread. When they were all gone, I threw the remainder of the bread away, I just wasn't interested. I have found, if I do want a sandwich, chaffles work great and your channel has been great for that. I follow a lot of keto channels for their recipes which I do modify sometimes because I'm not a big fan of bacon or high fat ground beef, makes my tummy hurt and it really doesn't please me taste wise. I find I feel well, work out well, have lots of energy, particularly for a 68 yo but I think however you eat, it has to be a lifestyle, not a diet.

This whole Keto thing is very interesting to me. I am 52 and have been the exact same weight since college. My diet is high fat low carb whole foods. When you speak about aches and pains it is something I cannot relate to. I feel exactly the same as when I was 25 and do not look my age. This may be the result of a lifetime of low carb eating? I always hated sweet things but loved meat and some vegetables.

You look fantastic! Not only way younger looking but better looking than you were when you got married. I'm one of those people that thinks a little grey at the temples is very distinguished. I'd definitely recommend Carb Manager. Even if you not doing Keto, it's so useful to be able to track what you eat. But, it also helped me realize the hidden carbs and be way more conscious of what I was consuming (even when it wasn't processed junk food). Give yourself a cheat here and there and don't worry about it (just don't make it a regular thing). If you're eating right 90-95% of the time, a high carb meal on a rare occasion won't kill you. Don't proselytize. If someone asks and/or is receptive go ahead. But don't go around trying to convert people. Be ready to have some willpower in social situations. It can be very tough to go to parties, or out to eat, and find anything Keto-friendly. I'll usually eat something before a party, because it really helps me avoid eating crap I don't want to eat, but probably would if I was too hungry and it was all there was to eat. Eating out, check out a menu ahead of time, or be prepared to just say, 'eff it', and cheat. For me, I eat out way less than I used to, anyway, because most options are bad and I'd rather cook at home so I can eat what I want.

I can relate to being the only one in your household doing keto. I have my husband, and grown children (son & daughter). I serve a keto casserole or meal to them 1-2 times a week, that I know they'll eat. Just last night, I made pasta with marinara sauce. Mine was with zucchini noodles, which my daughter had tasted the last time I made it, and she requested zoodles last night. Awesome! However, she also wanted garlic bread like my hubby & son were having, so that made me wrinkle my nose a bit. We just plug away.....

I started IF for the month of January for an experiment to see if it would budge my stall of over 2 years. I stopped eating at 7 pm and ate a small protein/fat snack at 3:00 or after next day, ate dinner 5:30-7:00, or whenever I got dinner ready. Have one black decaf in the mornings. It was pretty easy. I was shocked that the scale moved in the downward direction most days!! A few were the same and a few were up 4 ounces or less for the one day, and down more the next day. I lost almost a total of 8 pounds in January!! I'm going on February now. I do eat 2 times a week once or twice when we go out, but it's always Keto. I did 16/8 and 18/6 for all of 2019 and I had no weight loss and the inches didn't change that much either. Looking forward to seeing what February holds for me! Love your videos, and I don't think they are to long!

I just had a conversation with my husband and told him that I’m going back on keto (I stopped soon as Covid hit and gained all my weight back). I asked him if he would like to join me. He said he likes some of the keto I had eaten in the past, but there were some things he didn’t like, so he won’t mind at all cooking for himself on that day, yay teamwork!

It’s amazing when we start asking ourselves how we want to feel vs to cheat or not to cheat, treat whatever you want to call it, the picture becomes bigger than just a number on a scale. We actually can pause because we are not starving and dieting and exhausted...we have Keto clarity which helps us arrive at decisions that are not knee-jerk, reactive but proactive...I didn’t say perfect 100% but more thoughtful to our person first and foremost overall...it means we are recovering from an old way of thinking, believing and treating ourselves and finding satisfaction beyond food, diet and deprived thinking to living, thriving and growing! Peace everyone on the journey 😊

congratulations on all the hard work you did do, and good for all the insights you've gained! Thanks for sharing all this with us. I was very recently ill with a bad innner ear infection with vertigo, which affected my eating over the last month. I did not eat much and lost a bit of weight. Last Winter, I lost a big portion of weight with intermittent fasting, and portion control, eating more KETO friendly foods. I run garden centers for a living, and in April, people did not even recognize me and like you, noticed the stunned stares that were incredulous. "HOW did you lose the weight?" I just shrugged it off. This Winter, starting with this, I will be sure to lose weight and hopefully, go down a few more sizes. It is not rapid, but SLOW AND STEADY that wins the race. If you have a bit of weight to shrug off, then do it over a period of 2 years and you will see permanent weight loss and not see-sawing back and forth. I am glad that I am losing weight, and going back to my slimmer self is an accomplishment that I will see in my 60's. Glad to watch your channel as well. Your neighbor to the South (in Chicago). Happy New Year to all on this list.

I use the keto diet app ( free version) and it determines the macros for you based on your information. My protein is supposed to be 68 grams, my fat is 92 grams & my carbs is supposed to be under 30 carbs( most days it’s less than ten carbs). My calories is1250 but can go up to 1460 depending on what deficit I want. This has helped soooo much. It’s often surprises me that I need to eat more! Usually fat lol
