In 1994, My mother and I drove up Sunset Blvd then north on Benedict Canyon to Cielo Drive to see the once beautiful 10050 Cielo Drive house. This house was originally built in 1941 by Michele Morgan, this is the same house that actress Sharon Tate and 4 others were killed by the Manson Family in 1969. The original house was torn down and a new house was built with a new address of 10066 Cielo Drive.
I'm So Excited, I just received an email from a lady that wants to use some footage from this video on Cielo Drive for an HBO Documentary Special on Jimmy Lovine and Dr. Dre.
THE DEFIANT ONES - HBO DOCUMENTARY
Hello, George -
HBO is producing a documentary THE DEFIANT ONES that follows the careers of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. The production is seeking permission to use an excerpt from you video My Trip to Cielo Drive 1994.

Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

That house was beautiful the setting so serene and lovely with breathtaking views, a place anyone would be proud to call home, the kind of place you would hate to leave and smile and get excited all the way going back home, all those twists and turns going up so high tucked away above the city it seemed, this is a constant reminder that no matter how far you go or how high to get away and have your own private piece of heaven right here on earth the evil in people is determined to try to kill steal and destroy you your peace your dreams and your life and is never satisfied until it does, i think all those houses he passed all that way he traveled to reach the top to that house to bring destruction and grief and forever taint what was once so beautiful serene and lovely which is what evil does, some people are really sickning and go out of their way to make your life more difficult than life already is, very sad memory

But then the Murderers knew exactly where they were going. Both Tex Watson and Charlie Manson, had been on that property about 2 or 3 times each. As a matter of fact, both Tex, and Charlie were there together on at least one occasion, and perhaps more than that one occasion. Bottom line is, both Tex and Charlie were both on that property, prior to the night of the murders.

I did this drive with my cousin in 1984. The wall and gate had been changed, so you couldn't see the house from the street, but the original house was still there at that time. More recent footage I have seen shows that there has been a lot of building on the street since this was filmed. I'm amazed it was so relatively undeveloped in the mid-90s - how I remember it from 1984.

Here's the story: I lived in the San Fernando Valley and had just gotten my driver's liscence around the time of the Tate murders. Underage, I had a few years earlier managed to get in to see Valley Of The Dolls at the movie theater so I was familiar with Sharon Tate, and was a fan of Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins from their TV series. News of the murders was the talk of the town, to say the least! I was a student at Canoga Park High School located in a kind of ballpark area to the Span Movie Ranch in Chattsworth. My friends from Drama class and I got into this thing of driving up to the abandoned property after school as a spooky lark. I was more adventureous and before long began hosting trips up narrow Cielo Dr. off of Benedict Canyon Dr. to the famous Tate gate. Night & day! Unorthodox way to entertain ones friends but it had a certain fascination. Moving ahead, several years later, I guess for nostalga's sake (?) I was in the area and decided to make my old round. The Tate property was completely unchanged, but this time the chain link gate with the upraised old bell to the side was wide open! It was in lateish afternoon and I decided I would, for the first time, walk into the property. I didn't plan to go very far... Background is that when you stand at the front gate you can see a bit of the Tate ambiance as a little well is clearly in view. The driveway has a curve to it and you can see the rustic wood mixed with the white trim of the house and almost the front of the house, but it stops just short. As a person I am actually reserved and polite, very well behaved. Only I know the crazy inside, and all I can say is I was just - obsessed and that gave me the courage. So I'm walking up the driveway a little bit and quickly the well photograped front of the house with its famous white front "Piggy" door comes into view! To either side of the door are the big open french windows. Unfortunately for me(!), just as I came into view the owner of the house was looking out the window back at me! Scared? Big time. I knew I need to be relaxed and not make any sudden moves! A mature man came out who identified himself as the owner (Rudi Atabelli) of the house and wanted to know what I was doing there? Guilt rushed over me and I didn't want to identify myself as a Sharon Tate house lookie-loo, so I suddenly announced that I was a college student from UCLA and I was supposed to be meeting a group of other students for a meeting at a house at the end of Cielo Drive. "This isn't the house?", I might have asked. There was, I believe, another steep road on the opposite side of Cielo that I thought he might think is where I belonged. Upshot: He likely asked me a few try to pin me down questions but ultimately just let me go. With a warning? Can't remember his actual tone. Why?, you may ask. Well, I wouldn't do any of this today... Ah, youth, is all I can really muster...

That was a clever and somewhat realistic sounding cover story. I would have had to formulate a story like that before I got there as I don’t think I’d have the wits to come up with something like that on the spot! I’ve wondered about the road on the other side of Cielo. I learned there was actually a small access road to the property from the other side of the guest house. Years of reading about the case and I still have no grasp of where it was based on the layout of the property, and how easily it could be accessed by someone leaving (fleeing) the property.
@garywarmee4367
@garywarmee4367 2 жыл бұрын
EAST - Thanks so much for responding to this with a compliment as to my quick thinking! Yes, I was scared. Fear can make you very quick witted in coming up with the fake explanations? And I had to know the owner, Rudi Adabelli must have been very out of patience with unwelcome guests, if you get my drift... I have read lots of books with Tate house information too. I can't really remember it all and don't know about a backway out of the guest house but it seems to me the house (especially the guest house) ends on a kind of bluff where there would be no back entrance? This is off topic but in general reading I have discovered so many famous faces have visited the Tate house before Aug. 9, 1969. Most surprising, there was this young new heartthrob in Hollywood in the 1960s named Christopher Jones. Apparently he was renting the guest house where he took Debbie Reynolds, of all people, to visit!
@EastSide-qc5oy
@EastSide-qc5oy 2 жыл бұрын
gary warmee Yes I’ve read about Christopher Jones I think Altobelli was managing him, as well as Olivia Hussey who also lived on the property right after the murders and was involved with Christopher but claimed he mistreated and assaulted her. Much later Christopher Jones claimed to have been having an affair with Sharon Tate and was devastated by her murder. Jones was a troubled guy and had a mental breakdown at some point and had bad relations with directors (and one director drugged him during a film shoot) so it’s hard to know what really happened. Pretty dark story. There is an interview of Doris Tate here on KZfaq. I cannot remember if it was the a-hole Bill Nelson interview or of it was the Ed Sanders interview but in discussing the property the subject of some extra access road came up and Doris knew about this road. It was literally the first time I remember hearing about this road and I’ve been into this case for many years so I was very surprised. I haven’t been able to find any other details. I’ve always been curious about the relationship between the Cielo property and the neighboring houses, such above and below. I think it comes from a sense of “What if?” like if Abigail Folger was faster even having already been wounded, and if she had managed to knock Pat Krenwinkel on her ass and keep running and managed to get herself either down the hill in front or out to the side, hid or somehow accessed another house and reached help. I lived in LA for a time but never visited the exact area of the property so the only sense I have of how realistic that could have been is from photos and videos. Maybe it was completely unrealistic. It’s hard not to wonder.
@garywarmee4367
@garywarmee4367 2 жыл бұрын
WOW, 1027. Endlessly fascinating. You remember what I have forgotten. Yes. Olivia Hussey in her book! Imagine the small world! (Moving in AFTER the murders?) I didn't know CJ supposidly had an affair with Sharon Tate, but Debbie Reynolds in that little house? I am easily shocked! I can tell you about the properties around Cielo Dr. Everything is an off shoot off Benedict Canyon. As you will know Cielo Dr. is a little narrow uphill street that ends at the Tate house. The other properties are on the left. To the right is only a hill. While Rudi Atobelli's neighbors may be living a luxe life inside, from the street the residences looked rather ordinary if not run down. Drab and non revealing, but there was a view of sorts for them off balconys I'm thinking... I have always wondered about those houses too. Who would open their front door for an Abagail Foldger in the dead of night? On KZfaq there is a video of a close neighbor showing off his house, his collections of something I forget, the post a tie in to the Tate house but I don't think much was said about it. It is compellinng to imagine that spooky night. The imagination wonders if everything went down just as we have been told? Such a hot August night. I suppose it is real but it is so hard for me to imagine the concept of total mind control where someone is able to convince another otherise normal from suberbia to go out and savagely kill for them. Anyone in sight. Our Sadie Mae, Susan Atkins is some piece of work. I always thought she looked a little something like how we see Jesus presented in her going to and coming from trial photos. Not exactly one and the same person...

Was hoping to get a glimpse of Valentino's Falcon Lair, still standing until 2006 (owned by Doris Duke, died there in the early 90's.) Down the hill was Falcon Lodge on Cielo which was basically next door to the Tate property. Duke converted what was Valentino's stables into a guest house, the Lodge. Today, in 2020, Google Map really shows the layout of the area...

Wow!!! The main road leading to the area where they lived was so beautiful. Once you were off the main road heading toward the property, the surroundings left a lot to be desired. The entire community and the roads appear so unkempt and run down. I was absolutely shocked to see the old house was still there. I was told years ago it had been purchased and torn down. I assume someone must be living in it now. That was such a horrific tragedy no one will ever forget. I do want to thank you for filming and sharing this. It was very interesting. Seeing just how isolated the property is was a big surprise.

In the area where the house was now, according to tenants and neighbors in the area, paranormal things happen. I have a program where they were investigators of these phenomena in the area and they made a session of spiritualism in one of the houses where Sharon Tate was supposed to be and the result was shocking because one of the flames of the three candles on the table was twisted as if an invisible hand was touching her and the same thing happened when the spiritualist asked "are you here Sharon? if so, give us a sign" and suddenly the flame of the candle bends and all of them suddenly go out completely dark, After a while the spiritualist noticed a strong pain in her belly as if they were attacking her. Also for the day she claimed to see the spirit of a woman in the house but could not know if it was Sharon or another of the victims. One of the owners held a small party with his friends and they all claimed to witness how incorporating voices were heard inside the house when they were in complete silence.

There are a lot of interesting comments here about the home. But I honestly am surprised that it wasn't torn down many years before it was. Altibelli lived there off and on for 20 after that years. But he had to deal with all those tourists, morbidly curious people and so on coming up to the property. If it had been my relatives who died like like or a lot of people it would have been very hard to ever live there again. The house was somewhat exploited by the rock musician who was the last one to live there. Guns N Rose's also.
