Thanks for being so open about being an owner op. I always wondered how it worked and what difference in pay was, but was always afraid to ask other truckers. I felt like it would be too nosy of me to ask. Thank you, i love your honest and positive attitude.

Trucker Josh Thanks for making this video. It's a privilege for me when you share the thinking behind your "master plan" (or at least parts of it). I had no idea that your beautiful (well-maintained, solid, safe, late model) "New" truck cost only $15k. I'm frankly astounded at the depreciation from the price of new tractors - I cannot see how a new $160k truck can ever earn enough more money to justify the 966% higher price over what you now own.

***** Don't panic! Josh has it *all covered*, as well as anyone (without a Trust Fund), IMHO. (All the things attributed to Josh in this post is from (my memory of) comment(s) somewhere - sorry, I can't cite references - so If I'm mistaken - it's me - NOT MY LIFE DAILY vlog (Josh said)... He puts money aside monthly, both for 'maintenance' plus 'repair'. He researched the make/model of chassis with this engine/transmission - and is fully aware that there will be breakdowns - and is also aware that preventative-maintenance (well beyond 'just' changing lube, oil, and filters), will be required to prevent (most) breakdowns / 'strandings'. Josh says he has a 'tool kit', but, *Josh also has a cell-phone, and the good sense to use it*. All the hand-tools in the world wont help you nowadays - without diagnostic equipment, 'specialty' engine/transmission tools - and, most importantly,,, *A Parts Store*. (Fact is, fleets report far more out-of-service days due to 'parts waiting', than due to 'repairs'.) In Josh's extended family, there are currently 5 Owner-Operators. Josh's Father (an O/O) , knew the ONLY former-owner. - who was selling the truck upon his retirement. Truck was locally maintained throughout its life. It's service-history was known to Josh, pre-purchase. Josh had the truck 'inspected' (no, I don't know what that entailed - and yes, I know all about 'inspected' equipment failing soon after purchase). As Josh has been an OTR trucker for the past three years (plus 2 years daycab), he has seen enough and talked to enough truckers - in his own right, -to 'learn' what tends to break, and what it costs to fix. So, Josh 'pulled the trigger' and bought himself a truck. *As a member of his 'Internet family', I'm 'proud of him.* Finally, since you tacked-on to my post....I'll clarify that *I was surprised at the $15k price Josh said - just because the truck 'looks on video' to be 'worth much more than that'*. End. Of. I'm a gentleman -*I would never check* into the 'asking' or 'market ' price - of that particular truck. I also affirm that I was not questioning whether Josh 'really paid ' that amount. I have not, and will not, 'attempt' to find out the 'paperwork price' of the truck. Josh may have paid top-dollar - or he may have got it for 20% of 'market. *Time will tell if it's a good deal*.. Doesn't matter a bit to me. *Josh liked (loved?) the truck the day he first saw it - he liked it on the date of this video - and he still likes it a month later..(oh, And 'some Dog' - likes it enough to consider it 'home'!!!)*

Thumbs up from another hard core fan! Your first reason for becoming an O/O is the same reason I am starting a new career as a trucker after working 33 years. Some can't understand why I would want to leave a comfortable desk job, but I'm not doing this for them. This is for me. Keep doing what you need to do to live YOUR life as you wish. Good day to you Josh . I also started off as a owner operator . That was about 22 years ago. Some times you wish to rather work for some body , just for the sake of knowing that you can bargain on a known income , than to 'guess' what it will be. At the end of the day with all the ups and downs in the business , it is still a great blessing to own your own truck . Enjoy it and been the humble person that I sense you are , I am very confident that you will be very successful.

Hello Josh, concerning maintenance, do you have a freightliner service manual on board or not? What about a tool kit bag? Basic spanners and socket set, 1/4,1/2,3/4, 1" drive socket sets, pinch bar/podge bar, hammers, (ball pein small, medium, large, plus plastic hammer), wrenches, shifters- (adjustable spanner/crescent spanners) thread tape, duct tape, electrical tape, hacksaw, Allen keys metric and imperial, ratchet spanners (excellent for loosening or tightening something up in a hurry), files - hand smooth, hand second cut, hand rough/hand bastard files, chisel set, punch set, hose clamps, screw driver set, gear puller set, spare belts, spare hoses. Well, the tool kit alone Josh would be approximately just over $2000, however it might be cheaper in the States or Canada. A basic Fitter's kit in Australia is about $2000, or just little more, but definitely well worth having, as you would be surprised how much you start using them, and how much money you can save by doing most things yourself.

In my view, yours is a very mature attitude about the whole business of becoming an owner operator and I think you are going about it the correct way - cautiously! Can you say what is the position regarding the trailer that you use? It is interesting to hear that the company are covering the vehicle insurance (I presume that this covers the load as well) which I would think is quite novel, have you any idea how common this is?

That fuel surcharge has never been fair. Those shippers never pay for all the fuel it took to deliver their load. You'll still pay $1-$1.50/gal for fuel which comes from your bottom line. If you had your own authority, you could negotiate with your broker or shipper directly to make them pay for all the fuel it took to deliver their load. Example: You drive 600 miles to deliver a load. At 6 mpg that equals 100 gal of diesel. At $3/gal, that's $300 so your fuel surcharge needs to be $.50/mile. Those companies that lease drivers on under company authority hardly ever get the shipper to cover all the appropriate fuel cost.

Got an accident lingering on my record so I can't go till Spring. And if by chance you read this. What do you think about companies like Schnieder, swift, us express, ect?? I would keep the Freightliner for as long as it was financially viable. Sounds like a brand new 780 may be false economy. Assuming you paid 15k cash then you have no monthly finance on your truck. Your only outgoings are fuel and maintenance. Why pay hundreds of dollars per month for a new truck that does the same job as the Century? Maybe it will get 1-2mpg more but surely the saving on fuel would be eroded by the finance payout just to own the truck? As long as the Century's maintenance bill is less than the finance payment on a new truck then I would keep it going. Anyway good videos I'm enjoying them Stick a pin in Northern Ireland when you get your wall map sorted! New subscriber.

Right on the money.. Hang on to the 2009.. for a s long as it's financially viable. Go to Kevin Rutherford's site .. buy his gauges program.. Only when you understand your drop dead costs.. versus revenue .. can you plan your business i.e. routes, load.. etc. He's got tried and true suggestions to boost fuel economy. And all around informative site.. I helped my nephew using some of this info.. now the kid is turning a dollar and having fun with the business.

Is there any more money to be made as a hwy driver? I know I make damn good coin as far as local jobs go....but id kill to experience a little bit of the adventure that long haul offers!!
