Summer Schedule
Our schedule may vary, but expect a new video 3 days a week at 11AM Central!
How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a KZfaq channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin.
Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like.
These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

Danny Brinkley, I agree about running machines at night. I used to plow snow throughout the night and liked it much better than daytime. Also, watching farm equipment at night just has a much more powerful and beautiful feel to it.

Yeah, that's not fun when you forget that on the other side of the brush is a road. Just saying the driver of the pickup was not happy about being rammed into a ditch by a round bale. We didnt have pins just pushed down the hill for fun... when we heard the bang and subsequent crash we ran..... it was labeled a random accident

How do you know when its time to eject a bale? And do you use corn stalks the same as hay as others do wheat stalks? I think baling corn stalks is very rare, no?
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
The monitor in the cab beeps when the bale is getting close to full size, and then beeps a long tone to signal you to stop so it can wrap and be ready to eject the bale. Yes they use the corn stalks for bedding for the cattle in winter. Baling stalks isn't really rare at all... not quite as common as hay but not uncommon either... Later! OL J R :)

Can't see why not if going up and back and using the same A B line & there is ability to sideshift if not quite centred anyway ~~~
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
Technically you COULD but as a matter of practicality, no... The monitor tells you which side of the bale is smaller and needs more hay fed in to that side to make it the same size, so you'd have to override the autosteer anyway to feed the baler properly, so why bother?? I suppose if one were making "full width" windrows matched to the width of the baler pickup, you COULD use the autosteer, BUT I still think it's a bad idea... some jobs are just still done better the old fashioned way... Later! OL J R :)
@m.j.l.abulle9107
@m.j.l.abulle9107 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Luke ,haven't done 1000's of rounds but baler seems to feed evenly as long I'm visually near centre of the windrow, ( mine is a Vermeer 604 k almost vintage now but very well built ) the bulk of my work is done by a custom operator with a welger which is almost silent as it operates ~ ~ ~
@lukestrawwalker
@lukestrawwalker 4 жыл бұрын
@@m.j.l.abulle9107 It's not so much about feeding as it is about bale shape... I know some guys that LOVE "full width" raking, and it's fine and DOES WORK **IF** the windrows are CONSISTENTLY heavy all the way across... I've seen a LOT of "saddleback" bales that were made by "full width" windrows that were basically two dinky windrows laying side by side that was set to rake them close enough together to be the same "width" as the baler pickup... what happens is as the bale forms the two small windrows build the shoulders of the bale faster and very little material is going into the CENTER of pickup, so the bale ends up sorta "hourglass" shape or "saddlebacked"... they don't hold up well, don't store well, and are harder to handle and have higher losses when stored outside. Because of that I'm not a big fan of "full width raking" and prefer to just rake the windrow to whatever size is appropriate for the yield of hay... and then if I have to "weave" a little in baling, so what?? Yeah once in awhile you turn out a "cone" shaped bale, but most of the time you turn out MUCH more even and consistent bales than you would in "full width" raking in thin hay. Of course I've seen guys not weaving enough or weaving properly (following the monitor or eyeballs on an older baler) and end up turning out "barrel" shaped bales, which are fatter in the middle of the bale than on either end, basically the opposite of saddleback bales... barrel shaped bales are hard to handle and don't store as well either. 95% of the job comes down to the skill of the operator in the end... Later! OL J R :)
@m.j.l.abulle9107
@m.j.l.abulle9107 4 жыл бұрын
Got that all & agree you see all types of operator skill out there . After mowing the potential quality & quantity losses begin , in our climate raking or tedding too aggressively at the wrong time of day can cause damage . As a tubewrapping custom operator I have seen it all ,both good & bad & it is satisfying to have a client's job go well with dense high quality bales ~~~
