Engine out on these is actually quite easy. I picked up a 5.0v10 - 04 in vgc in devon for 2k, i drive it everywhere now, it's faaannnntastic to drive, MPG is obviously not great but... YOLO!

I had an exhaust leak at the exact same spot; the manifold had a 2mm crack on the flange lip. Engine out. And while it is out, you can also do the A/C compressor drive coupling.

Hi Dean, it could well be a leaky injector seal, I had the same thing on my 3.0tdi v6, they have an escape port under the injector which releases combustion gasses when the copper injector seal goes bad. Might be worth checking before giving up? Cheers 👍🏼

Owning 2 of these v10 s ,one work horse and one investment Sunday car, these are the smartest autistic student who needs to be dumbed down and not have hissy fits. Coming from Japanese performance and custom installation in Australia, these cars need to be modified to be simplified. I believe motech do ecu programmable common rail stand alone ecu , this would be a good start. Open up the inlet manifold s to custom inspection/ cleaning abilities as these soot up, move and redesign turbos and manifolds the audi v12 tdi is a better design for location and accessibility, manual air suspension control in cabin . Loose the kessy system = flat battery draining in 2 days, this should be a warranty recall for being dodgy i have 3 vw vehicles all with the same problem . But the biggest thing is the use of biodegradable plastics an rubber as mandated by the UN this is dangerous and costing you money as components fail or loose their insulation on wireing , if nothing else encourages rodents to eat your car. Bottom line is build something reliable and to last and it will be greener than these feel good legislation that ends up being scraped after giving you greif. Would I buy a euro trash car again new or / sh ? NO this is a prime reason people are paying big money for old cars because you can work on them and are reliable no hissy fit limp home dramas

Could the cutting out be bcoz of a limit switch on the boot either faulty or telling you it is unsafe to drive with the boot open? I had a friend with a Montego (yes it was a long long time ago) that suddenly refused to start, caught out many mechanics, it was a defective oil pressure sender unit that cost about a quid, the ECU thought there was no oil in the sump.

As you spent so much effort on diagnostics and know the problem, it is in fact the matter of how you could make sure your time spent can be recovered. I think if you are confident that it can be saved, just a matter of 2 weeks of man hour, why not see if you can have a bid here. The market price is 3500 pound basically included a big risk. If you can fix it properly, I am quite sure some people is willing to pay way more than that, say 6000 or 7000. Plus the extra content you can have, I think you can break even or make a profit. If you just sell it, I believe this car would end up into bits and pieces which is quite sad.
