There’s no copyright in the classical works themselves, but there is copyright in the sound recordings owned by record companies.

You can’t record Toccata and Fugue and then go and sell it. Yet, there’s different areas around the world in which you could. Never mind. It’s a mystery

Cool. This was performed in the upper Basilica of Saint Francis in the medieval central Italian town of Assisi. The huge murals on each side of the church's nave depict the various life events of the saint. Assisi is a beautiful town with buildings made of bricks that give off a pinkish hue on a bright day. As for Baroque & Classical music, I say just listen to sample works of a broad variety of composers - JSBach, Corelli, Vivaldi, Joseph Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak et al. I'm not a fan of the post 1909 Classical compositions but these are the ones that the majority of classic rock and jazz fans seem to gravitate to.

@@purplesheen I appreciate your honesty. Music School isn’t for everyone and some musicians can’t keep up with the millions of the composers and musicians from the opuses Songs, concerto’s, even top tiered musicians avoid school because of the many names and materials and the list goes on. Technology is taking over now, so I don’t know how college professors/teachers of music are handling that. Via School policies etc. Auto tune . The teacher makes a huge difference in how we learn. Every teacher and professor etc needs to be paid so much more.

Larry, check out Rachmaninoff's piano concerto no. 2. It's considered by many to be the greatest and most famous piece of classical music ever. It was written around 250 years after Vivaldi's four seasons, so a lot newer in camparison.

Classical music is cool but if I’m honest I didn’t like that performance so much - it had a little too much of a modern tone but I listened to it on my phone so that probably didn’t do it justice. My wife loves classical music so it’s often being played in our house. We also have a piano so she’ll often play it in her free time - it’s very relaxing to listen to. Over the years we have been to concerts and recitals. We went to a violin one about 20 years ago and it was very good although I forget who the violinist was.

One of the most beautiful pieces of music you will ever hear, Larry, is “The Lark Ascending” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Listen to it with Mollie some day. Enjoyed your classical moment with this video. Hope you’ll do more of the same.

There is no copyright on orchestral music written before 1870 or whenever copyrighting of recordings started but, there are copyrights on this performance and the audio-video recording of it. It is possible that you may get a copyright strike from KZfaq or not. I say probably not. This Vivaldi piece is so well known and has elements been made into some rock music, "ethnic" world music, jazz, country music, soul music, and even hip-hop and rap. For me, baroque and classical and any music without electronic amplification is pure real music. People who don't like it need to open their minds to it and explore it. Now, search for an orchestral recording of the Canadian National Anthem without singing on it. It'll "blow your mind."

Siouxsie & The Banshees used The Rite Of Spring by Stravinsky as walk-on music & that sent me to the classical section & I purchased a Deutsche Gramophone version of it. It's an intense piece of music.

So did the band Yes, bk. in the early '70s. It can be heard at the beginning of the live album Yessongs. And like you, it got me interested in classical music.

Nice place to start Larry. The camera angles were a bit much, but the music was fantastic. And to be honest, it helped that the soloist was a beautiful woman as well. Itzhak Perlman is an incredible violinist, but I'd rather watch Ms. Petryshak.

If you have a spare hour and a half I recommend Mahler's Symphony 3. It has a real prog/film score vibe about it :-)

Not only is there classical music, there is the Medieval period (500-1400), Renaissance (1400-1600), Baroque (1600-1750), Classical (1750-1830), etc. up to the 21st Century - with differences in every period. A lot to sample, including the beginning of opera and stuff like that. Vivaldi is from the Baroque period and so is Bach. Mozart is from the Classical period. They didn't have streaming or even vinyl so how was music passed down? Music history is quite interesting because it eventually leads to the rock music you like. And this is primarily European music. It doesn't even touch on Eastern music or the music of the "Americas."

A great idea for a series and certainly something that has come across my mind many times - especially when looking through the stacks of classical vinyl at thrift stores - are they any good? Which ones are better than others?

I really enjoy this. I bet the acoustics are amazing there. WINTER has some dissonant accents that stand out. Some violinists would use the wooden part of the bow creating it in more elaborate ways. Prior to listening to this, you mentioned that classical music doesn’t have Trademark Copyright laws etc. **Yet, 40 years ago approximately, The Rachmaninoff Estate received royalties from some musician who took a melody from the 2nd movement of Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Concerto to create his own version but with lyrics. A popular song called: ALL BY MYSELF. I’m still scratching my head on that one.

For some darker "Heavy" classical I recommend Carmina Burana - O Fortuna and Richard Wagner - Siegfried's Funeral March from "Gotterdämmerung", Act III (Both on the Excalibur Soundtrack). There are others that have even influenced some rock music but for me, those two stand out. For a more modern Classical song I recommend The Orgy - Conan the Barbarian Theme (Basil Poledouris)

I think it was cool that they had a group of bandit classical musicians. I often wonder if say AC/DC could travel back in time to about 1600 and set up in the town square in let’s say London with their battery powered equipment and maybe kick off with ‘Let there be Rock’ followed by ‘Whole lotta Rosie’, how long it would be before they were burned at the stake.

Very cool Larry. Some classical music is very good. Have a glass or two of wine (or Canadian Club) to relax a bit. Beethoven's No.9 Symphony is a good place to start. A few side notes: Don't drink too much. You'll defeat the purpose if you listen to it backwards. I've seen some of your recent videos! The blonde at 2:09 can practice at my place anytime. The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky is an excellent piece of music! Be safe my friend. 🤠 🖖...live long and prosper...

Why not follow some of the leads Sparks have given you? They've written a song about Stravinsky which mentions two of his ballets (The Firebird and The Rite of Spring), as you know, and Ron Mael has spoken of Richard Strauss' Four Last Songs as one of his favourite pieces. They've also played selections from Mahler's First Symphony and Bruckner's Eighth Symphony before their concerts. None of these pieces is anything like what you have just listened to - the variety to be found in classical music is one of the most astonishing things about it.

I heard orchestral music in the 60's long before I heard any pop or rock music. There is nothing particularly difficult about listening to it and there is nothing quite like the first time you hear an orchestra live. It's all down to taste. I really don't like Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Like some other excerpts of orchestral music,(Carmina Burana, Nessun dorma), they are played to death on TV or as background music while you wait three hours to speak to someone in a big corporation! But there is so much to explore, so little time. Give Arnold Bax a try or Ina Boyle, Doreen Carwithen, Sibelius, Britten, Stravinsky, Holst, Clara Schumann, Debussy, Ravel, De Falla etc etc etc.
