For the first time since they were launched in 2018, Celebrity Cruises is sending their highly rated Edge class of ships to Alaska! I just so happened to have been on the inaugural sailing aboard the Celebrity Edge, staying in a balcony cabin. So today, let's take a deeper look into this very well liked cruise ship and see if not only if it's a good ship to brave the cold waters of the north Pacific, but also to see if it's worth the money!

I would definitely love to see a video on how public space keeps getting cordoned off in favor of exclusive spaces. Like with the upcoming Utopia of the Seas, they removed the public spaces above the bridge wings and turned that into a suite, taking away that genuinely cool area for every other guest on board.

It'd also be super interesting to see the level of upselling/upcharging a suite passenger. I understand it more towards cheaper rooms but how much does it happen in the premium and restricted access area?
@mommynab
@mommynab 4 күн бұрын
@homiga1 He can do a video, short answer is yes and no. For our 30th wedding anniversary we splurged for an entry level Sky suite. It does eliminate some of the annoying upcharges, like the retreat lounge is fully stocked with all the fancy water, premium drink package, wifi, butler, light apps & snacks, and of course the private restaurant Luminae, you can also go to Blu. Includes priority boarding etc. In general, I didn't feel upsell pressure however there are always the "do you want to upgrade more opportunities" 😅 Before boarding email asking did we want the next level up suite? Nope. During dinner there was a wine tasting experience offered for a fee, we said no. I never felt pressured but yes some opportunities to upcharge. We went to Eden for dinner which is a separate fee but it was delicious. No complaints except I was too full to eat dessert.

the 'infinite veranda' seems well suited for a cold-weather cruise like this. If I was doing a Caribbean cruise, I think I'd never open it, not wanting the room to get all hot and muggy.
@sean_king
@sean_king 4 күн бұрын
Indeed, and imagine if the room had occupants of whom some wanted to use the veranda while some wanted to stay indoors. Celebrity can't call themselves a family-fruendly cruise line until these rooms are made ready to accomodate more than 2 pax comfortably

@@sean_king to me, this infinite veranda is the worst screwup since NCL did some weird toilet and shower out in the middle of the cabin thing on one of their ships. In the caribbean, it's just a nice sunroom--but you can't comfortably open it for fresh air.

We just got off Icon of the Seas on a Mexico itinerary in a similar infinite balcony room. We found that closing the curtains significantly reduced the amount of heat that made it into the rest of the cabin. @@Rumline7 icon has something similar to this type of balcony?? Obviously, on the celeb ship, a certain amount of heat/muggy makes it in, and the a/c cuts off (which is logical; I'm not a big believer in running the a/c with an open window.

@ashleys4652
@ashleys4652 4 күн бұрын
They are paying a premium price for the "ship within a ship" experience. Often 3-4 times the amount of a standard balcony cabin. If people are willing to pay it, why is it getting out of hand? The cruise lines will continue to build ships similar to the Edge, and the newer ships in that class have even larger suite only spaces. It's amazing and luxurious, a great way to get away from the crowds.
@gebs123
@gebs123 4 күн бұрын
@@ashleys4652 By moving too much of the public space into a premium section, it's making the crowds worse for those who didn't pay that premium. They are causing the problem and then selling the cure. It also brings to mind class-segregated ships from early 1900s (like the Titanic). Which is the last thing you want to be remaindered of on a vacation.

@@gebs123 Then sail on ships that don't have such a ship within a ship concept. @@emmetlover206 Paying more equals better quality as it should. Fact of life for most things...hotels, cars, homes, restaurants. If I pay more for a suite then dinners should include better cuts of meat, high end sea food ect. All cruise lines have made cut backs since the pandemic, food is one of the major factors. And not all Celebrity ships have "nothing special" food. We were on the Beyond and the buffet food was excellent. I think the thing they need to work on most is consistency throughout the fleet.

Meanwhile the main dining room meals I had on Reflection just a month ago were outstanding. While not as good at entertainment, Holland America to me consistently has the best food, and for Alaska, the best experience.

I'm from Germany and have gone on a couple of cruises with the German cruise line "Mein Schiff" (Tui, Royal Caribbean sister firm). What I like most about is that drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) are included for all passengers. You never have to present your key card when ordering a drink. They also purposefully build smaller ships and the atmosphere on the ships is always quite relaxed. They are not a luxury cruise line and it doesn't feel like they're trying to charge you for everything. The captains on the ships also give at least one lecture each week, and they always have lecturers and regional experts on board presenting the next stop. Thanks for your thorough and honest review!

please do a video about the classism on ships lately. very interested in the topic. i personally am against it but clearly its working for the companies. would be fun to see a comparison of how much each line milks the top spenders in terms of what the top suite offering is vs cost. Wonder if Disneys is still the most expensive. also wonder if any companies have egregiously bad reward system /loyalty club perks. seems like those have gone downhill in the recent times too. even that "concierge" status screams ripoff.

We did Holland America at about the same time. It was definitely a quieter cruise, but pretty fantastic. There were multiple enrichment lectures in front of huge video walls about indigenous people, the Iditarod along with other subjects. Movies on deck (covered with retractable roof) were mostly Disney nature documentaries. We sailed Glacier Bay and picked up multiple park rangers that hung out on decks to point out wildlife and answer questions. There was also a ranger on the PA system pointing out things of interest. While sailing glacier bay, soup was served around the ship, a pretty cool touch. The dining room featured Alaskan Salmon dishes nightly. There was a fishing excursion where if you caught fish, a chef would prepare them for your dinner on board. This is also my first Alaskan cruise and I think that Holland America knocked it out of the park. There was little to no up-selling that I could see.

I did the Volendam last year, which is one of their smallest ships. Was a very traditional cruising experience. Cosy and laid back. Ship was nice, as was the room, and as you said, the lectures were great, as was the itinerary. You could really tell the hotel department staff were inexperienced though. Slow service, and not that friendly compared to other cruises I've been on. The boarding process at Vancouver was also agonizingly slow. Princess really has it down to a fine art, which is odd considering they're both owned by Carnival.

@@MmntechCa this year in Vancouver, check-in was very quick. They gave us boarding times since there was a second ship boarding at the same time. Having all of those DIY kiosks (with lots of people around to help) really moved things along. The pier staff really kept people moving and headed in the right direction. The crew on the Konningsdam was fantastic and efficient. The cruise definitely felt more traditional which we really liked, the crew very personable.

We were on Edge from Sydney in April 2024. We both agree that the beds were too firm and causing numbness in both our arms. Bad weather in the Southern ocean caused passengers to congregate inside on sea days so all areas were crowded. The Mast Grill lacked any sauces to go with their burgers or hot dogs. The Eden Cafe was packed out whenever we tried to eat there.

I remember my Alaskan cruise. It was truly unforgettable. It was 10 days on the Crown Princess. The dichotomy of being on a luxury ship surrounded by untamed wilderness was a weird feeling. What was nice about that ship was the promenade does wrap around all the way to the tip of the bow, and it had a nice room all the way on top and aft of the ship that is like a second bridge. I remember sitting up there while the ship steamed away from Skagway and seeing the incredible views of the valley. We also did the 360-degree spin near the glacier, and I remember spending a lot of time on the bow promenade in my wind breaker to take in the views. Even being sick for the first couple of days from the flight didn't take away from my experience.

The segmenting of space into premium/standard is deeply problematic because the lines control both sides of the equation - the more they crowd the standard spaces, the more you feel incentive to pay for premium. There literally is no downside for them to continue and expand this trend. Until passengers revolt and push back by simply not booking. Unlikely to happen anytime soon. You absolutely should deep dive on this, and I would love to see articles spun off your story that bring the practice into question.

We will see whether it gets too hot, but I’m certainly going to enjoy the extra space. I’m expecting to spend a lot of time outdoors in warmer weather so hopefully the common areas won’t be too crowded. I’m sorry to hear that the food was disappointing as Celebrity was renowned for their cuisine.

We found that sailing in a Sky Suite (Celebrity’s smallest suite) was very roomy. The food in Luminae was gourmet quality and the service was top shelf. A superior product compared to Concierge Class on Disney.

Just returned from the Jun 21-28 cruise. I did enjoy your commentary and agree with much of what you produced. My take: you missed out on not going to Blu, not being in AquaClass to avoid crowds, and to be on the front facing deck as we approached the Dawes Glacier with the ability to get out of the rain, retreat to a heated seat, have coffee and hot chocolate provided and to experience everything you mentioned from a distance of ONE MILE from the glacier. (we were told by Captain Matt that it was the closest that a cruise ship has approached the glacier in 5 years). Yes we upgraded our drink package, our tip package, our "removal" from the general population. But after discounts, early booking, etc. we were still barely under 3000 per person. You missed some world class musical performances by Stephen Barry and all of the shows and musicians were terrific (except for one duet, stuck in Eden for most of the time as they were not very good). My biggest complaint was the smoking. 6 of the 7 days, we had to keep our Deck 9 window closed due to the weed and cigarette smoke. All 3 levels of Eden are adjacent to the outdoor smoking sections and there was no escaping the smoke, even indoors. For those who need to eat nachos and pizza on an Alaskan cruise (not kids)............dear lord.......sorry for you.

I went on Edge last year in the "Retreat" (suite) class as a super splurge trip. It was amazing and their Luminae restaurant and private suite deck (for night-time quiet hot tub) were amazing. It was so great we booked and went on Beyond this year in the same class. It's like a different experience in regards to service. We barely ever went out of the Retreat area on either cruise. Now just have to save for 10 years for another, lol... But really beautiful ships

$40,000 is wild lol, but the views were nice, food being mid is a bummer, and the up charges were kinda ridiculous considering you’re already paying more. But great video, I appreciate you covering these travel destinations!

We embarked on Edge at Seattle right after your cruise ended. I don't feel it was that crowded onboard, and included food was pretty decent in my view, but these were subjective. The only day and place being crowded in my view was lunch time in buffet the day call in Juneau. The reason is probably that Edge docks at about 1330 in later closed-loop cruises, and everyone would like to have lunch before getting ashore, while the lunch option onboard is somehow very limited (only buffet, one of specialty dining restaurant, and Mast Grill if I don't remember wrong.) Infinite veranda is really great for temperate zone cruising like in Alaska, we almost always open it when we were not sleeping whenever weather is good and the ship wasn't sailing in open ocean. On the other hand, those little perks coming with concierge really isn't worth it, a normal infinite veranda room just gives same cruise experience. In overall, although a lot of amenities are designed for warm regions, Edge is surprisingly good for Alaska, I'd definitely recommend if you're ok not to use either outdoor pool or rooftop garden. Captain Matt held a welcome event in Eden for guests sailing Celebrity the first time. Didn't won lucky draw but had a short chat and a photo with him. He's a cool guy.

I was also on this sailing for my first Celebrity cruise. I had a solo Infinite Veranda, and although there really was no storage, I did enjoy just sitting there, looking for whales. I did enjoy the ship, and now since they have made the reciprocal benefits even better with Royal, I won’t hesitate to sail Celebrity again (even though I do like my solo discount on Royal now).

As someone who hasn't cruised on Celebrity often, I'm always SO confused with what the 'Concierge class' actually is, other than a better location onboard the ship - thanks for confirming it's equally as confusing onboard - that description made me laugh, haha!

I love how you pointed out the openness of the ship. I was recently on Beyond and I really loved the flow and feel. Whereas before that one I was on the Norwegian Viva and I found it lacking in views and kind of disjointed. Viva also faces the same issue of restrictiing a lot of area, inluding most of the back top deck, to The Haven.
