Recently learnt (especially for atmospheric liquid deep liquid) that using a reverb send with a short decay time, and the send around 10-20% really brightens the drums a lot. otherwise another go to for me is Izotope Trash 2s tape saturation preset then play with the pre and drive to your liking! Would be really cool to see you do a tutorial using trash 2 with your own approach!

I usually just put a compressor and saturator on the drum group. Then send a little reverb on a return track. Also send some Decapitator on a return track as well to brighten everything up

I think it‘s a lot easier to use a send/return in live so you can blend the compressed signal in with the send-level of the main drums. Just my opinion! Great channel and great content by the way! The best DnB Tutorial-Channel I’ve seen so far!!👍

Working with Addictive Drums today and bounced out the overhead and room channels separately as well as stems for each dry drum, then it’s just a question of getting a good blend between the three - this way you get the punch and transients of the dries and the thickness of the compressed/saturated room... which is basically what you’ve done here 😂

"if your drums are quiet in the mix, just bring them up" no buddy, when there are other sounds clashing with your drums, it makes them perceived as quiet because of blanketing.

Texture wins over transient, especially when In the end everything is getting squashed up into a limiter. If the focus is on transient you have to think what will be left after said transients are clipped/limited. You could have the softest/quietest snare/kick in the world then side chain ur musical elements around it making it feel like it’s smacking your head off. We have to think about micro transients, ie. Texture. Loved this video, much respect 🫡

I don't understand the need for a return track or for sending everything to a separate audio track and blending the signals. Both Glue Compressor and Saturator devices have a Dry/Wet control. Wouldn't it also be parallel processing to just turn down the Dry/Wet on these devices? And if you wanted to add an EQ before them, just group them in an Audio Effect Rack and blend the dry signal that way. Seems easier then setting up and routing to additional tracks or returns.
@mykdubz128

This all describes my main point of criticism very well: a whole armada of plugins is used to fix a single problem. It's not the mix at all, but the simple selection of the sounds. I hear that the bass sounds are already quite sharp - why use a snare drum with a lot of noise on top? In my opinion, the snare should have more body and, above all, be shorter. The kick drum is just too quiet, but otherwise absolutely okay. If drum sounds sound a bit limp overall, an old MPC trick usually works best: simply layer a rimshot or a similar sound underneath. This is the best way to avoid this unspeakably inflationary use of compressors and other plugins; also drum sounds can sound much more powerful if you slightly put a folding distortion on it (doesn't work with any drum sound especially with acoustic drums but most electronic sounds). In the end, however, one should always ask oneself: Is the sound really better now or just different? Anyway, your sound usually is top shelf - you remember EgoTrippin? - Their drum sounds are always a bit floppy and still work in the mix. Oh wait, one other point: check the timing/phase of all the drums. In most cases that is the reason for weak sound in the mix. And only if these handcraft's jobs are done, then you can think about compression and other stuff to add the magic.
@edcruwys
@edcruwys 2 жыл бұрын
The snare and hi-hat are very tinny. At a base level, doubling up the kick and making a fatter sound would be way more effective than processing with plug-ins what already sounds 'thin'
@OdinComposer
@OdinComposer 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting comment! How should the phase of the drums be?
@mykdubz128
@mykdubz128 2 жыл бұрын
@@OdinComposer You need to listen to it. It depends on the other bass signals in the mix. Sometimes it can change a world if you just delay the snare a tiny little bit. The same goes for claps. I usually put a snare a little later and claps a little earlier.
@mykdubz128
@mykdubz128 2 жыл бұрын
@@edcruwys it's one of the usual mistakes in the production process when producers try to fix bad drum picks with technology. Plugins are there to make a good sound even better. That's why you do all the handcraft FIRST - timing, volume, phase and that stuff. If that is fixed - and only then - you can add some processing. Sometimes I see well known KZfaqrs setting a lineup of different distortion, eq and dynamic plugins for a channel, never realizing that these plugins interact and very often actually interfere because there is a huge difference in which order you set them - widely completely ignored or they indeed didn't know about that.

@@mykdubz128 It's possible Stranjah simply created the problem by limiting his choices as he wanted to be able to showcase his roller kit I think. We are probably being harsh expecting too much when something was actually a demo 🤷‍♂ Thanks for the response

What is the difference between distortion and saturation?
@STRANJAH
@STRANJAH 2 жыл бұрын
From Sageaudio: Saturation, when talking about audio, is a combination of compression and distortion which is created from overloading the physical components of an electrical system. Distortion, when talking about audio, is the altering of the shape of a waveform which creates a different tonality from that of the original waveform.

Funny, I read that comment as a criticism of the drums in jump up, in general. Not your specific drums. Which I think it acceptable critique of the genre, it's not a style that's really focused on complex drums, rather simple drums that work really well with a big chungus bassline. :) Oh well that's how I read that comment anyway.

I think it's just style difference, these modern clap-ish/white noise snares always sounds thinner/weaker than 90s techstep snares no matter how much effects were added. If that guy want really fat drums, just listen to Dom & Roland.

If you do, don’t do it on the cow bell version of phonk, aka “drift phonk”. And if you do, please differentiate that it is a “drift phonk” tutorial. There’s literally a small culture problem where this cowbell sound has drowned out the original phonk sound, which is amazing and significantly different consisting of much more instrumental variety.
