Hi Drew, that means a lot that you appreciate my approach. I have refined it over time. I think almost all of us have done that

Awesome pickups so far this year, which seems to be flying by. I love the intentional & methodical plan. I am learning to be that way but find it hard to stay focused at times. Thank you for sharing the Bobby Richardson/Mickey Mantle story. Your pickups are unique & beautiful. My favorite is the Boivin with that pink background though the Pinson is a close second. The fact that it was a swing & a miss, is fascinating to me & immortalized in cardboard. I’ll end my rambling here but just wanted to say Thank you for reaching out the other day. Wonderful presentation, as always, Terry. The breadth of your collection is inspiring. Ken Anderson and Jim Maloney and even John Stallworth, so underappreciated. As you know, Maloney threw two no hitters in 1965 (but MLB nullified one). Kenny Anderson made the Bengals a contender. I did not know about Billy Wilson. Beautiful Doak Walker card. I could go on. Thanks for showing us some visually appealing cards, and the stories behind them.

Thanks, Rob! Yes, if Maloney gets that no-hitter in a 9-inning game, he will have three. Only six pitchers have three or more. I was happy to finally add one to my collection. It is a nice-looking photo of him too. It is a shame Ken Anderson is not in the HOF, given how he led the league in passer rating three times and passing yards twice. Add in an MVP, All-Pro, and four Pro Bowls, and you have one of the best QBs of his era.

Hi Terry! When I watch your videos and see your collection I always say to myself that your collection is well thought out. There is a purpose to every card. I used to feel it was a jigsaw puzzle waiting to be completed, but then I realized it was an expanding set of building blocks that gets bigger with each acquisition each you make. You have an explanation for every card you've bought. I don't think any of us on here can say that. I've gotten to see a lot of these cards in our text chats and they look great. The Kenny Anderson card is a reminder to me of what a great player he was. He could throw the ball to Issac Curtis to in later years to Chris Collinsworth, he could hand off the ball to Boogie Clark or just run the ball himself if the Bengals needed a first down. What a deal you you got on the Billy Wilson card. I cannot pick a favorite between Walker and Hull. They're both great pickups and great cards. That Andy Rzobustelli card just stands out. I loved the Giants uniforms back then. The Mantle/Richardson story is special. Those two shared a special relationship. Richardson seemed to be a man a lot of his teammates admired. When I saw your AL Bombers card I also saw a very special card. I may have to get one of my own someday. Thanks so much for sharing, Terry!
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648

Hi Rick! I like the building block analogy. Having a collection where the cards have a place is how I want to be remembered as a collector. I have spent time thinking about my next phase of collecting and displaying my cards and magazines. As I get older, I enjoy learning about players and reflecting them in my collection. Ken Anderson should've been in the HOF a long time ago. I mentioned to Drew (Clean Cheap Shots) that Ken Stabler said he would have a young quarterback study Ken Anderson. What a compliment! Anderson could do it all except win Super Bowls. It is unfair that he is penalized for that, but that is the reality of playing the quarterback position. The AL Bombers and Bombers Best are two awesome cards. I would like to add the 1960 Mantle/Boyer next. I will likely never own any Mantles between '51-'54, and I already have his base cards from 1956-1969, so I want to add some of his combo cards. Thanks, Rick!

Hi Andy, My oldest son has about 20 to 25 games left, including tournament play which ends in early August. My youngest daughter has probably around 20 games left. So, we're about halfway through the season. Michael plays roughly 50 games and Rachael plays 40 to 45, not counting school ball. We use wood bats here because the fields are smaller. There have been a few home runs in this tournament that wouldn’t clear the field in some of the other parks we play in. It's one of the fun, sometimes frustrating quirks of baseball, depending on which side you're on. I was happy to add the Wilson at that price; it's a beauty. Yeah, the Cookie card gave me the biggest thrill when opening the mail. The Doak was pretty thrilling too. I thought categorizing them was a fun way to do it because those are the focus areas in my approach to buying cards. Have a great Sunday

Love the stories of the first half additions to your collection! Here’s hoping the second half is just as productive! The Ken Anderson card reminds me of the great Steeler-Bengals rivalry of the 1970’s, especially the 7-3 Steelers win on November 28, 1976 in the blizzard! As usual the Steelers defense was the difference. Anderson was a great QB, he just couldn’t get past the Steelers when it counted. The Cookie Gilchrist CFL card is a great looking card from a set I was not aware of! The Bombers Best card is very emblematic of the lifelong relationship between Richardson and Mantle! Bobby gave Mickey what is, I believe, 13:35 the highest compliment a player can another player, “He was a great teammate!” Congratulations on your collecting journey so far this year and thank you for sharing it with us!
@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648

Hi Rick, I agree with you regarding the compliment Bobby gave Mickey. I think it's wonderful that Mantle wanted that on his plaque in Yankee Stadium. Given all his accolades, that is what he valued most. The 1958 Topps CFL set is a nice one. Of course, it has the 1958 NFL football design. There are a couple more players I wouldn’t mind adding. Good points about Ken Anderson. I think he is a Hall of Famer because he was the most accurate passer of his era, was the first to regularly use the West Coast offense before it moved to the West Coast with the 49ers, and was an NFL MVP who played in a Super Bowl. I'm glad you enjoyed the pickups and stories. It means a lot. Take care, my friend

Hi Drew! Yes, the wooden bat hitting the ball is such a sweet sound. As much as we criticize the baseball HOF, the football HOF is much worse. The new voters don’t appreciate many of the old timers and the committee doesn’t let nearly enough players in. Ken Anderson was the most accurate passer of his era and he could throw the deep ball. As Ken Stabler said, if I was teaching a young quarterback, I would have him watch Ken Anderson. Pinson has a wonderful looking run of cards. The Bombers Best card is so meaningful on many levels. I am glad you enjoyed. Thanks, my friend.

Hi CK! Appreciate the like and for sharing your thoughts. Yeah, fortunately I don’t have to choose one of those three favorites and give the other two back. The Gilchrist card is just so tough. I wasn’t sure if I would ever own it. Add in the AFL and Buffalo collection and that’s the winner.

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 I have an affinity for Gilchrist‘s cards. A coworker used to run a computerized NFL game with historical teams. I chose the Bills because I loved Jim Kelly as a kid. But since this was an all time greats league I had Cookie on my team. So I learned about him. So that when you showed his rookie card that gave me a chance to reflect back to those times.

@@The_Cincinnati_Kid sorry CK for the late reply. I missed this in my feed. That is so awesome you had Cookie on your team. Kelly was one of the toughest quarterbacks to play. He could take a beating and still find a way to win.

Boy, I wish I had your buying discipline Terry! I usually spend at least a $100 over my monthly budget. I suspect it’s because we are at different stages of our journeys with me enjoying some extra discretionary funds due to my fixed income with less real life financial responsibilities. Man, you’ve sold me on Del Shofner & especially the 1960 card. Many players in that set have great portraits especially Starr & Forrest Gregg as well as Shofner. I have a bid in for a set in the current REA auction-wish me luck!!

Hi Gary, yes, I am at the age when my financial responsibilities are high-three teenagers with a soon-to-be fourth one, funding retirement, and equity tied up in my home. You know how it is. I wouldn’t be doing things too much differently anyway, as far as what I am looking for. I was fortunate to get back in when I was in my mid-twenties and never stopped; that has helped a lot. Good luck with the REA auction. Let me know how it goes. The 1960 Topps football set is a beauty; there is something about the photography and design that I find appealing. The Rams and 49ers cards are visually my favorites.

Hey Terry. Have you noticed though how the sound of the ball coming off the bat has changed in the majors? Usually it sounds like the bat is breaking. It's not the same as the classic sound we all know. I think the reason is the way they make the bats today, along with the harder, more tightly wound ball. I really don't like it. Have you noticed this at all? I like your approach of your collecting goals being a compass that also allows for spontaneous purchases. Too much discipline is a downer and a grind. We should be having fun! You have a nice 1961 Jim Maloney. It's great that KZfaq has an hour of footage of his completing his no-hitter against the Cubs in 1965. I also love seeing those 1960 Topps football cards. I haven't seen them in too many KZfaq videos. They look really nice. The Billy Wilson card with the yellow football against the red uniform really stands out. And then you have the reverse with the Shofner card. Nice recap of your year so far. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Gannon, Interesting comment about the sound of the ball. I hadn’t noticed it before. I went back and listened to the crack of the bat for Mantle’s 500th, Gibson’s game-winning home run in the 1988 World Series, and several of Judge's home runs from 2022. The Mantle and Gibson home runs have a similar sound, while Judge’s is more amplified. Some of that may be due to the microphones used today and where they are placed, but it does sound different. It could also be the bat, ball and where he hit it. I do like the sound coming off his bat. I'm not sure if he uses maple or ash. I will pay more attention. I like the pose on the Maloney rookie card, and the red, yellow, and blue used for the name complement the photo nicely. The 1961 design allows the photo to capture the spotlight. When it's a good photo, the cards stand out, and when it isn’t, they also stand out for negative reasons. I’m glad you enjoy seeing the 1960 Topps cards. I think the photo and picture quality are both well done. The Shofner and Wilson cards are two examples among many. I will have to check out the Maloney video. Have a great Sunday

@@tjmacvintagecardsnostalgia648 Hey Terry. I think sound is definitely different. And you can hear the difference at the ballpark too. I'll probably hit (pardon the pun) a game before the summer is over after I negotiate a loan from the bank, lol, but it's definitely different. I was fishing around for the classic sound yesterday on KZfaq, and not every clip is going to pick things up the same way of course. But one clip that captures it is Jim Northrup's grand slam in the 1968 World Series (check out the clip that is 1:08). It's at Busch Stadium and there's even a sort of echoing sound when he hits it. But it's the classic sound. There will be times that the sound today does not have the broken bat sound. I listened to an Ohtani home run the other day, and it was different than that - but it wasn't the classic sound either. The bats and the balls are different today and I think that's the reason. You might have more of a chance of the classic sound perhaps at your son's games maybe. Anyway, I'm going to get a cup of coffee. Good morning to you!

Thanks Mark! On the Hull a PSA 6.5 sold for $143 and the BGS I bought sold for $89. Both presented nicely, but PSA sells for a premium over BGS. That's worked in my favor since I don't plan on selling my Hull anytime soon. I hope all is well. Take care!
