Story 1: OP’s was in deep denial about the extent of his son’s mental stability and should’ve immediately 1) informed his wife and 2) reported him to police to ensure that he underwent a complete psych eval. The kid was a very troubled teenager whose issues weren’t properly addressed, so god only knows what type of harm he’s causing to innocent victims now that he’s an adult. OP and his ex wife have done society a huge disservice by allowing such a dangerous person to go unpunished. SMH

Story 1: OP should have taken the dog back to the vet after the bite. This way he could get proof of any damage done to Colby. Then contacted his therapist to get a copy of his records. Taken everything to the police. File a report. A court can send him to an institution to get the in depth help he needs. What OP has done so far for his son isn't enough. Serial killers and rpist are well known for starting with animal abuse.

You had 3 opportunities to disown / beat up / denounce to the police your sick son. You failed as a person. I’m astounded at how he dealt with this situation because I would have beat the brakes off my son if he did what he did to the family dog and removed his access to the Internet. Story1: OMG. One of the sickest things that I ever heard. First I can understand OP not going nuclear on his son. This is his kid and he instinctively wants to protect him. Not destroy him. He hopes that the son can be salvaged without damaging his reputation for the rest of his life. Problem is that he son is too far gone and nobody recognised it. The therapist might have given a heads up that she was getting nowhere but... nothing. The mother's reaction was another iteration of the protection mode that OP showed. OP covered it up to protect his son. Mom threw OP under the bus (OP mentioned that the marriage was already rocky but didn't specify) in order to to protect her son. She found it easier to think the worst of her husband than her child. A Momma bear protecting her cub. Turns out to have been the wrong choice.
