A year after Myanmar’s military coup upended the nation, the country has slipped into chaos. The People’s Defence Forces-a scrappy coalition of fighters-have become the newest group resisting the military. Twelve months ago, these men and women were students and office workers protesting the coup. Now, they carry out surprise attacks on junta checkpoints, bomb army convoys, and fight to overthrow the military government. VICE correspondent Ben C. Solomon travels to the Thai-Myanmar border to find out how these new soldiers are trapped in the prolonged battle.

A year ago these teenagers had nothing but paper signs against the heavily armed army. There were videos of Army thugs having fun doing target practice on unarmed civilians. Especially weak 60+ year old elders and 1-3 year old kids. Bashing healthcare workers heads in. Stealing food from street food vendors. No end to absurd news on and on! All because they want to power trip and soothe their huge egos. Some Army thugs even posted on Tiktok acting tough with their rifles. Now that the unarmed teenagers can fight back, albeit with lesser quality guns, the thug Army is having a difficult time. It's funny how a group of kids with homemade guns and mines are schooling the Army on how to fight. I am so proud of the kids in the People’s Defence Forces. All we could do a year ago was grit our teeth when we hear news of injustices. Now, every single day we have several headlines hearing Army thugs getting killed daily by mines and ambushes. All across the country!

@@CrazyandLazy I recommend this Frontier Myanmar report (partly copied) - Rising dragon: TNLA declares ‘victory’ in northern Shan dated Feb 3: "Tanyang township, which is also home to many Shan people, is known for poverty, illicit drug production and conflict; numerous pro-military forces and ethnic armed groups, including the Shan State Progress Party, have a presence here. Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) leaders say the group gained control of parts of Tangyang as part of an agreement with the SSPP, its ally in northern Shan State, and has received a warm welcome from the Rumai, a Ta’ang tribe that lives in Tangyang and provided most of the new recruits marching at the ceremony. “Previously our troops could not reach these areas, but now we have a presence,” TNLA commander-in-chief Tar Hold Plang said at the January 12 ceremony. “Finally, we can protect our Ta’ang people here.” TNLA leaders told Frontier that the coup had created an opportunity to make inroads against the RCSS. Because the Tatmadaw was distracted by events elsewhere in the country, it did little to prevent their attacks on the Shan group, and TNLA forces were able to move relatively freely around northern Shan State. For the first time since arriving in northern Shan State, the RCSS was forced to withdraw in the face of a combined TNLA and SSPP attack, retreating from a mountain base near Nyaung Maung village north of Kyaukme, Tar Muse said. The TNLA won an even more significant victory in October, when its troops forced the RCSS to retreat from its stronghold at Hu Hsun, after several months of fighting."

@@ms.gregoria2249 Speaking of which, the coups in Myanmar and some others around the world today are totally different from the coups which took place over half a century earlier when newly independent nations, including Burma, just came out of centuries-long Colonialism, bitter and poverty-stricken, turned to a new deal of Social-Democratic system (Socialism/Communism). - Today's coups, in most cases, are changes in the political system only, while the economic system is mostly left intact. Like I said, today's coups, in nations such as South Korea, the Philippines & Thailand, in most cases, are changes in the political sector only, while the economic/investment sectors are mostly left intact. - So what is this the fact that the West & their Western news media hardly utter a negative word about coups in Asian nations such as South Korea & the Philippines in the past and Thailand today; and yet the West, Western news media and their affiliates hardly have a day goes by without having negative comments & reactions regarding coup in Myanmar. May I ask why are they treating it so differently with Myanmar and most of all, what are they up to, what is their truth motives behind all these? - Speaking of USA-led joint annual military exercise in Thailand, which has been under military coup since 2014, and true, last August 2021/22, the largest annual military exercise was held among full participating nations, USA, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia & Singapore. In my humble opinion, Burma would have been much better off without Anglo British Colonialism. For instance, there's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian there up until Colonialism. I supposed it's fair to say that many of these tragedies that nation facing today, such as racial, ethnic and religious conflicts, started with Colonialism. 😔 Speaking of ethnic and religious tragedies Burma facing today, the fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. In my humble opinion, ethnic refugees & others fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia. - The fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. Now Muslims people are under even more threats than it was in the past. Before it was only in Rakhine state, now it's open season on Muslims and ethnic minority. One Muslim family was raided and young daughters were raped in Mandalay by military people a few months ago. A young Muslim man was beaten to death in broad daylight last month in Mandalay. I live near a mosque in Mandalay and I know lots of Muslim neighbors, everyone were living under intense fear, at least there used to be law in place to protect the Muslims living in big cities. The Tatmadaw (Burmese Military) are now universally reviled by every ethnic group in Burma after turning their guns on even their own Bamar people last February. This essentially removed the last moral justification the Military had to power by claiming that this was just a sectarian conflict, which means that every stakeholder in the country (and even outside) now stands to benefit from the military's defeat, similar to how ISIS was so awful that everyone wanted them gone. Because of this I easily see the possibility of foreign volunteers travelling to fight in Burma as this civil war heats up, so to any of you fellas who missed your shot at ISIS in the 2010s, get ready for a second chance to shine.

@@yo2trader539 Wrong, Burma's only period of rapid economic growth was from 2008 to 2021 during the time the country was a partial democracy. Since the coup last February Myanmar's GDP has contracted by 30% and is projected to fall even further as the generals consolidate control and begin using the country's wealth for personal expenses like during the height of their power. The Military always has been Burma's biggest economic liability to the point that even their biggest partner China has voiced concerns over delays caused by the coup to the numerous infrastructure deals it signed with Burma's previous democratic government. Its why the Chinese have continued to maintain and even increase contacts with Burmese rebel groups and proxies despite stalling UN resolutions condemning the coup. Nobody in Burma benefits from the Junta aside from the Generals themselves, any suggestion otherwise is deliberate misinformation.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of innocent people of Myanmar have suffered for way too long through no fault of their own, way back from Colonialism. Peace and prosperity to long suffering Myanmar people! 🙏 🙏 🙏 The coups in Myanmar and some others around the world today are totally different from the coups which took place over half a century earlier when newly independent nations, including Burma, just came out of centuries-long Colonialism, bitter and poverty-stricken, turned to a new deal of Social-Democratic system (Socialism/Communism). Today's coups, in most cases, are changes in the political system only, while the economic system is mostly left intact. Like I said, today's coups, in nations such as South Korea, the Philippines & Thailand, in most cases, are changes in the political sector only, while the economic/investment sectors are mostly left intact. So what is this the fact that the West & their Western news media hardly utter a negative word about coups in Asian nations such as South Korea & the Philippines in the past and Thailand today; and yet the West, Western news media and their affiliates hardly have a day goes by without having negative comments & reactions regarding coup in Myanmar. May I ask why are they treating it so differently with Myanmar and most of all, what are they up to, what is their truth motives behind all these? Speaking of USA-led joint annual military exercise in Thailand, which has been under military coup since 2014, and true, last August 2021, the largest annual military exercise was held among full participating nations, USA, Thailand, South Korea, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia & Singapore. The difference between Myanmar and my Singapore is that Myanmar made a mistake by allowing US and EU NGOs to infiltrate the country.., while Singapore will never allow these US and EU NGOs to conduct their covert operations freely on Singaporean soil. A costly lesson for Myanmar. Western sponsored 'Color Revolution' in Myanmar is now creating humanitarian crises all over the nation, as peaceful protests turn into violent riots. It is said that there's around 100 groups and organizations which are currently funded by the West to incite demonstrations & riots in Myanmar. It seems all the Western inciters from places like Hong Kong in the past are in Myanmar. If you check out the U.S funding through NGO/NED to Myanmar promoting 'Democracy', the list of programs is very extensive. Targeting so many areas in Myanmar's society, including the youth to rebel against the military. This is the result you are seeing today on the ground. The U.K also has been providing similar support as well. It's never a noble undertaking when the U.S government starts funding protests, especially when you also find out that they are funding, training and arming all of the different ethnic minority groups in the region and turning them against each other! The image of grassroots protest the media has been painting is impossible to pass these days when you see all these grassroots protesters with weapons of war, I wonder how that happened! This has been going on for a long time and the U.S had a lot to do with the Rohinga crisis as well. It's been a long term destabilization campaign, for the most part, to block and undermine China's Belt and Road Initiative, BRI; promoting all this killing just to support some geopolitical agenda because they would rather destroy their competition than just compete.

If you must know, former Colonial Anglo West has been consistently trying to divide Burma/Myanmar into pieces for ages. They have been watching and waiting for this opportunity at every corner and every turn in Myanmar's history since it gained Independence from Britain some seventy years ago. I may be wrong, but my gut feeling has been telling me this for a long time. Remember, Yugoslavia, the world leader of the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War, and what happened to that nation? Today, former Yugoslavia was divided and became six smaller nations, much thanks to the West. Slavery, Colonialism and Colonization, etc are evil things done and benefited by evildoers. Like you said, in centuries-long old Colonial era, when the world was under Colonial Anglo Western control & influence; nations/ethnic groups in Asia, Africa, North & South America, were committing atrocities against one another (brother against brother, etc), all because Colonial West pit one group against another, which is the the ploy (such as, 'divide & conquer, divide & rule, divide & loot'), that were regularly used for their own Western advantages; what they call it, 'Anglo Western Interests'. True, it's all about 'Anglo Western Hegemony' by all means and at all cost to this day. By the way, do you know the fact that there are only two nations in the world that have been continuously engaged in fighting since WWII. They are USA and Myanmar. While wealthy USA, as a gang leader of Capitalist Imperialist Anglo West, would go all over the whole wide world to engage in wars, to loot bounties, and thus became evermore prosperous; impoverished Myanmar, on the other hand, is engaged in internal civil war, brother against brother, which causes everyone involved getting even more impoverished and destitute. So and so, this cycle of 'infighting and poverty' continues back and forth to this day. A sad truth indeed. Moreover, the Capitalist Imperialist West would go into the region/nation for their own interest, and then divide and conquer, divide and rule, divide and loot, pit one 'local group' against another. These 'local populace' that are used by the West or sided with the West, in the conflict/crisis/war, and when they are needed to be evacuated for one reason or the other, then the West will raise the issue about 'refugees'. This has been the case throughout history wherever the conflict the West is involved in. In fact, there were tens of millions of refugees here in the USA & other Western nations that the West brings in throughout history, past and present. Besides, Myanmar has had no politics for over two generations; so it's new for people there, young and old alike. In other words, it's easy to get fooled by the Capitalist Imperialist trick. Here in USA, the so-called 'Politics' is a little more than a 'Window Dressing' (mainly used by the wealthiest Capitalist/ the One Percent elite who are 'The Power That Be'/ the real ruler of the land), while 'Politicians' are merely 'Poster Boys' put it out as part of Democracy. Finally, Capitalist West's so-called 'Democracy, Freedom, and Human Rights', etc are just marketing terms used by the Rich/obscenely rich Capitalists from The Capitalist USA & the West to sell their game, subjugating the Poor throughout the whole wide world, and milking them for everything they can. In other words, Democracy, Freedom, and Human Rights are just marketing tools used by the Rich from the USA & the West to sell their game, subjugate and milk the Poor worldwide. In fact, a mere fifty (50) Capitalist elites from the USA & the West have more wealth than half the world population, which is nearly 4 billions.

There's hardly any Muslim, Hindu or Christian in Myanmar up until Anglo British Colonialism. 'Anglos caused most of the world's problems' ~ David Cameron, former British Prime Minister Speaking of ethnic and religious tragedies Burma/Myanmar facing today, the fact that the world's longest Civil War which is in Myanmar, mainly between Buddhist Burmese and Christian Karen (while Buddhist Karen are largely at peace) was made it possible, prolonged and supported by Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc while they are using next-door neighbor Thailand (which has a defense treaty with them) as a base camp since in the 1950. In my humble opinion, ethnic Karen refugees fleeing the conflict/war in Myanmar are entitled to cross over to Thailand to stay, as well as eligibility to relocate to new places such as USA, Australia. Like I said, Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc are using next-door neighbor Thailand, which has a defense treaty with them, as a base camp since in the 1950s; from which attack against China/PRC was launched by sending Chinese Nationalist (Taiwanese Kuomintang) forces into nearby Burma's eastern border closed to China in the '50s and '60s. Like Anglo British introduced opium to China a century earlier, USA-led Anglo clans introduced opium/opium growing as a form of self-support to those Chinese Nationalist (Taiwanese Kuomintang) forces in Shan State of Burma in the '50s and '60s. You see that's how Burma became opium producer. 🤔 Anglo Clans of USA, UK & Australia, etc are using next-door neighbor Thailand, which has a defense treaty with them, as a base camp since in the 1950s; from which attack against nearby Laos & Cambodia were launched during Indochina war. Speaking of the Capitalist Imperialist Anglo Western war in Vietnam, 15 years of war in the Indochina war was all about RUBBER that the region produced around 80% of world supply in those days. About 5 million innocent Vietnamese and 6 million Cambodians died due to the direct and indirect effect of war. Moreover, Anglo West's war in Iraq was all about OIL, and 20 years of Afghan war/occupation was for RARE EARTH MINERALS. About half a million Iraq citizens and over one hundred thousand Afghans died as well. 😔

My thoughts and prayers go out to Myanmar people as well. 🙏 In my humble opinion, Myanmar is just another nation, the U.S & the West try to rule and fail. I keep my finger crossed and pray for Myanmar that full blown civil war is not coming to a long suffering nation anytime in the future. 🙏 In near by Buddhist nation of Sri Lanka, a long and bloody civil war between the Sinhalese majority and Tamil ethnic minority was as a result of Colonial master Anglo British's notorious 'divide and rule' ploy, that tension between the two groups had been simmering for a century way back in Colonial era, when British pit one against the other. The Anglo West is playing on both sides; to divide and rule, and to stop China's massive BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) in Myanmar & throughout the region. Same old lame old Western Capitalist Imperialist trick! The West is working hard to block China access to the sea through Myanmar; as with the case in the South China Sea where they have been working on for a decade. The USA-led West is trying so hard to put barriers around China. See, South China Sea, for example. They have been working hard on that front for so long. Now they are working on this Myanmar-China front, since it gives China access to the sea. There are gas pipelines, oil pipelines, container ship ports and roads between Myanmar's coastal region and China's Yunnan Province; all these infrastructures give China access to the sea through Myanmar. In other words, Myanmar is increasingly becoming a strategic point for China, economy & military wise, so the Anglo Western gang is playing hard to block it. That is what it's all about. Besides, People's Republic of China's noble global initiative development plan, Belt & Road Initiative, BRI that it wants to develop off-the-beaten-path regions of the world, such as inner and mountainous regions that are left behind, in terms of development, and has a "will and power" to do so. While market economies such as Capitalist West do not have the will and power to do so, simply because a market economy means it only invests the money where the market is, where one can make money out of it. So in that sense, China's 'One Belt, One Road' policy benefits a great many regions and nations that are left behind, in terms of economic development, due to their geographical location. China's One Belt-One Road global development initiative program has 65 nations involved worldwide, and many of them are, like Myanmar & Indochina, off the beaten path, far-flung regions that are left untouched by economic development. And of course, the good old Western nations that thrive on Capitalism, and accumulated great mountains of wealth on Colonialism in the past, are hardly involved in this great program.

"Anglos caused most of the world's problems" - David Cameron, former British Prime Minister Let me rephrase it, if I may; "Anglos caused most of the world's problems, including a heck of a hell lot in Burma/Myanmar". - first under the long and painful Anglo British Colonial era; - secondly, boycotted and blacklisted by Anglo West, as an impoverished nation turned to Socialism for relief after Colonialism. Myanmar has a sad saying that goes "A poor young girl got raped and got hurt twice", referring to their nation's double tragedies. The fact the Colonial master Anglo West has left countless trails of 'WRONGS' that former colonial nations are still trying to untangle and get them right, to right those wrongs. While at the same time, former Colonial powers and the West have been busy blacklisting, boycotting and sanctioning all those nations that try to right the wrongs of all their sins/wrongs of the past. Since the world is still under their mighty military, economic and political control and influence; although to some degrees, it seems dwindling lately as China and others are rising steadily and thus slowly but steadily shifting the balance of the power of the world. In Colonial era, cities like Rangoon-Burma, Saigon-Vietnam and Shanghai-China were quite similar in a sense that those cities were quite prosperous and wealthy but those wealth (mainly generated from trading countries' labors & resources) were largely in the hands of Colonial masters & foreigners alike, while Natives were mainly poor and doing menial works. In fact, in Rangoon in Colonial era there were signs that essentially said, "No Burmese and dogs allowed". In Saigon in Colonial era there were signs that essentially said, "No Vietnamese and dogs allowed". In Shanghai in Colonial era there were signs that essentially said, "No Chinese and dogs allowed". Remember the days when Burma was call 'Rice bowl of Asia' while Zimbabwe was called 'Bread basket of Africa'; but who are the main beneficiaries of all these bountiful wealth under Colonialism? The answer is Colonial master Western clans. When some of these former Colonial nations turned away from them, the former Colonial master Western clans pulled the plug and blackout against them, since they still control enormous economy and military power/might on earth. Its all about my way or highway Western mentality, and yet they preach about Freedom. After these former Colonial nations turned to People Republic/Socialism for a relief after enduring long and painful Colonialism; the West which had enjoyed and accumulated enormous amount of wealth during their centuries-long global Colonialism, blackout and blacklist former colonies. True, then they would blame on Dictatorship, Corruption, Authoritarian rule, A failed state, etc of any nation that doesn’t submit to their mighty Capitalist Imperialist West.

Currently, the military regime is facing daily attacks from PDFs and ethnic armed organizations nationwide, with the exception of Rakhine State. The military is stretched on many fronts across Myanmar and can hardly afford to send the number of troops that would be required to establish control in all parts of the country. Between 5 and 10 Tatmadaw personnel are deserting every day, informed sources say the desertion rate is much higher than that.
