To mark 40 years of the punk movement, Johna Johnson takes a look back at how the music influenced Bradford and it's inhabitants. Johna chats to key figures from the scene and looks at what made punk much more than just musical trend. This is a snap-shot of a wider future piece.

Reflected on this Johnna brought back memories of great times, great people, great place to grow up. It was the gateway to my life in London.

I'm a new-ish resident of Bradford, and a Mexican/American Indian immigrant here, and more proud today than ever to have settled in Bradford. I've left behind my own very rich No-Coast Midwest American punk scene to settle here, with my husband- an OG Bradford goth/punk. I'm really honoured to have such a vibrant cast of crew that made this area badass far before I ever came this way. Thank you Johna and Aki and all the Bradford scene folks for the rich history this elder American scene kid gets to settle in. I do hope this sometime becomes a full length piece, as I'd love to see it.

I don't know if it was around when these guys were still part of the scene, but the 1 in 12 Club has been the epicentre of Bradford (and sometimes just northen) punk since the late 80s

Not quite...The Metropol and Manhattan Club did the majority of the gigs in the late 80's. Use to be a cracking scene to be honest.

Aki's part of the history is interesting, and i had no idea he was from Bradford. There's something very fascinating about the bradford punk scene. my mam is from down the road in halifax and was around for the first wave of punk herself, having my gran as a seamstress as she would often ask her to design punk clothes for her and regaling me with stories with how Crass once played one of the social clubs in the area. on the bfd side though, I imagine you know my previous exes father Stephen, who played in the band Vexx.

I knew Stephen very well I was at his wedding Last time i saw him which was decades ago Last time i saw him he was in Hebden Bridge What was fascinating about the Bradford Punks was the diversity of the group Anyone who didn't fit into normal society got involved with the Bradford punk scene It was a great time for Bradford

@@johnajohnson4216 ah that's lovely. sadly me and the previous mentioned are a memory in the past now i'd rather forget. i did find her a picture of him during his time in vexx which she really appreciated, thanks to the power of the internet and all. my mam's crowd of punks were very same, i see still her old punk boyfriend among my travels in halifax, he himself is still in love with the lifestyle, as much is myself. good times for all.

@@keironhiggspoet I don't think i met Steve's Daughter ;we;ll i did but she was very young back in the Hebden Bridge days I really liked Steve He had issues but so do more people When i had a serious health issue Steve was a great help as he had experienced a similar situation There was a place called called the Good Mood in Halifax back in 77 /78 which was above the George Pub We would sometimes go over there when they had good bands on

@@johnajohnson4216 sad that, yeah, its more a reoccurring thing now. good to hear he was there for you. yes, i was told of the good mood. plenty of good bands dropped in there which are probably playing the piece hall now for almost twice the price ! haha.

Happy memories of the Skive n Jive gig at Bradford Uni outdoors in the summer, the first time I saw a charismatic bloke in a t shirt with “ fuck off” and the anarchy sign. The next time I saw him he was the front man of The Negativz. How much fun was it as a teenager to leap around in a pub with the smell of sweaty leather jackets and beer to that music? Thanks for the video.
