Trying to FIX: Faulty £28 Xbox One from eBay

Hi, this 'trying to fix' video shows me attempting to repair a cheap £28 ($36) Xbox One purchased from eBay. Apparently it randomly turns off.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

With that sync button you can just bend out the centre to give back tension to the tactile switch. Same type of switch for the paddles in a scuf and I have fixed mine this way when it got 'stuck'. I just grabbed each of the corners and bend them back slightly (thus bending the centre up) and it brought back that tension and has been working great since!

I came across an Xbox One with the same liquid residue pattern that dripped down the power-button board and ribbon. The unit also powered off randomly, but chimed as if the power button had been touched. Touching the power-button ribbon, the ribbon socket, or parts of the board would activate the power button. Everything related to the touch power-button seemed sensitive to touch. The liquid residue was randomly activating it and powering off the Xbox. Perhaps your Xbox had a similar issue, and you fixed it by cleaning it up. Your videos are my favorite, Vince! Your optimism and determination are inspiring!

SlimDave2208 not always a power brick problem, my power brick stopped working and I ended up buying 2 knock off ones and 2 Xbox original ones and non of them worked, I would press the button then after 5 - 10 seconds it would just go off again, cleaned it, checked for lose or unplugged cables, changed the hard drive, applied new thermal paste and I even tried putting a stronger fan in there from my pc and put a new battery pack in the console and nothing fixed it, instead I just bought the xbox X and nothing has happened so far

I’m guessing it was a child’s Xbox, based on the fact that the 4 games already on it were fortnite, GTA5, roblox and the sims. I could only assume that it started acting up after a few years, the child complained about it and the parents tried to open it up, but had no clue what to do so they sold it and bought the kid a new one. Based on the actual inside of it, it seems I was correct. It looks like a kid had it in their room and was eating around it frequently

As a mobile PC / laptop repair guy I can confirm that 95% of laptops & home consoles are _at least_ this filthy. It never ceases to baffle me.Incidentally you used the perfect amount of thermal paste. The paste's job is to fill in the micro gaps between CPU & heatsink, and is not supposed to be a layer in itself. The metal is the best conductor of heat, not the paste.

You made me laugh at the point where you said "lets get some thermal paste on so everyone can argue about how much" =D Question - where can I buy "Elbo Grease" from, and how much to apply? :o) Regards that flex ribbon - do you think the problem was at the switch end, or the other side that mates with the motherboard?
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, thermal paste....I think I still got the amount right this time but not the application. Next time Chris I WILL succeed. I will add an affiliate link to the elbow grease, make me some money for the Christmas pressies. I am pretty sure it was the switch end because it could short when using the tweezers directly on the pads but I found no damage and the metal clicker bit looked perfect when I first of all took it off. You have me thinking now if it could have been the other end that connected to the front board. The contacts didn't look normal. They seem to be covered in a carbon type paste with copper underneath. I haven't seen contacts like that before BUT....that board was where the slight corrosion was so it could be that end....I will look at it again. As always, thank you. Sorry I have been a bit bad at the replies on the last couple of vids. I seem to be spending a lot of hours each week on the comments and I don't always have time to film/edit and reply. I saw a demonstration once about proper thermal paste application. The demonstration showed thermal paste applied as a pea sized dot, and an 'X' shape, and also pre-spread across the heatsink surface. The paste was applied to glass, and then the heatsink was placed over it. He used a pane of glass because glass is very flat, and you can see what happens to the paste from underneath. If you have a spare piece of glass, you can try this yourself, just so you see for yourself what happens to the paste when it is squished.

You actually used slightly too little thermal paste. Tests have also shown that it's best to use too much than too little paste, as in comparison you'll _generally_ get better thermal performance with too much. It's the safest option because it's always hard to judge the right amount. People *always* say that KZfaqrs like yourself use too much, but just ignore it unless you're actually using an absurd amount. I've built PC's with this in mind since the late 90's and have always had expected or better than expected CPU/GPU temperatures.

With a thermal compound that has no electrical conduction (such as the MX-4 you use) there is no such thing as too much. When the heat sink is put on and tightened down, any excess will just harmlessly squeeze out the sides. Too little can be an issue though. One thing to consider is the fact that the heat sink contacts directly with the die, instead of some form of integrated heat spreader as you would commonly find on relatively new computer CPU's. The whole "too much vs too little" pseudo-debate is more relevant to that as the IHS is a larger area than the die itself, meaning you only need to make sure that a small portion is covered with the TIM. Where bare dies are concerned (such as the example in this video) your best bet is to use a plastic spreader or something similar to achieve an even coating (only really necessary to ensure the entire die is covered in the TIM, you can also just use "way too much" and squish it down and out with the heat sink as I mentioned above) Hope this made any kinda sense, it's 9:30 in the morning and I haven't gone to sleep yet :-D

funny thing with the button, had a notebook come in 2 weeks ago it was stated that the DC connection was loose. So i fixed that but after that fix i couldnt start the notebook on button press... well it worked but as it was the case with you it worked realy inconsistently... So i had to get a new button from china (which in this case was luckily just a normal electrical button) which i found on ebay for 3euros for 50 pieces... great deal, orderd changed and it worked. I opend the "not working" button up and it looked exactly like a working button. So i dont know what breaks in there but something randomly appears to stop work in those buttons. It had this metal membrane in it which gets pressed down by pressing the button down on to the contacts... dont know why it stopped working but yea... changed it and happy owner now :) dont bother wasting time on those they just seem to randomly break.

15:19 hahaha Vince that’s hilarious 😆 but sounds about right when people get mad about thermal paste. Next time spread it with an old card or something flat to have create a thin layer over the chip :)

The amount of thermal compound added in this video seems about right to me. This *does* appear to be a CPU die instead of an IHS over it, so possibly I'm wrong, but you only really need enough to fill the microscopic space between the heatsink and the CPU, too much could indeed affect performance, because thermal paste isnt actually the best at thermal transfer.
@NotSuspiciousNate
@NotSuspiciousNate 4 жыл бұрын
One thing you can do if you're uncertain about the amount of thermal paste you're applying is to put a small amount on the CPU and use something like an old credit card cut down, or just buy a thermal paste spreader and spread the paste evenly until you're comfortable with the coverage.

4 or 5 hours for FH4 Vince 90 minutes. On another note buddy, I like to get a really thin coating of thermal paste over the whole IHS, before reassembly, rather than just leave it to chance that the compound spreads evenly. Don't take that chance that it's all pushed one way, or two. Get that like a nice layer of thin paint, and you can't go wrong mate.

The general guide for thermal paste is that you should use an amount the size of a pea. What I saw in the video looked about right but it is hard to tell from a camera because you can't easily tell how much the picture is zoomed in. Having said that for some modern CPU's (AMD Threadripper and Epic chips as examples) you need to use a lot more.
@chrometn7556

If you are ever wondering about thermal paste go for a pea size blob, but as the Xbox die seems small I would say what you done or slightly bigger like just smaller than a pea would be an alright size
