In this Tea Break Fix we have a KRUPS F203 Coffee/Herb grinder. This one likes to hum instead of spin. Is something like this fixable? Let's find out.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

Another idea: You could have drilled out the plastic in the bottom just a bit so you could get a bigger screwdriver in. I don't think I would worry about touching any mains leads in there if the hole is just a bit bigger than how it comes from the factory.

Yes, in hindsight that would have been a better option. I wasn't sure how bad it was seized, but if I had known it was only just seized then it would have been a better fix 👍

@@Mymatevince All is not lost now that it's glued back together, I'd use a Dremel tool and grind a small slot on the top of the shaft where the blade attached. Then you could easily use a screwdriver from above by simply removing that blade. Alternatively determine the thread size and buy a nut (or preferably 2 jam nuts - they are thinner than regular nuts) to fit on the top that you could use to apply considerable torque with a wrench after removing the blade.

@Nathan Hand its also due to penny pinching I built slot machines and the cost of screws even in bulk is not cheap. But as a consumer I rather pay the extra dollar for the screws.

Great job Vince! The problem with blade grinders VS burr grinders that we use in coffee shops. Is the consistency, those blades kinda make it all shapes and sizes and a burr grinder will get it to exactly what you need. Also grind sizes are Very fine for espresso More course for drip and pour over And very course for cold brew. The way I always remember it is, the longer the water is touching the beans the more course it needs to be. 🙏

Following this video, I just fixed my KRUPS F203 coffee grinder with this same humming but not spinning problem. Thanks! The product label on my machine completely covered the hole on the bottom, but it's still easy to find. Like what others commented here, I drilled the existing hole bigger so I could fit in my screwdriver. The rest was easy.

Thanks Vince. My model was about 30 years old, same problem but didn't have any screwdriver slot so i drilled a hole through the bottom. Unfortunately the bit chewed up the shaft end slot so I had to take it apart anyhow. You can get the bottom off without breaking the tabs by carefully levering through the 4 slots. I filed a new slot on the shaft so I could unscrew the rotor. You can then access a barbed collar which is around the top shaft to retain the dish. Ease each of the barbed segments in towards the shaft and you can then ease the stainless dish upwards. There are then 2 screws under the dish which hold the motor frame into the body. I stripped it all and re-oiled the bronze bushes. Works a treat now. .

I have the exact same model. I've had it for about four years. The thing with these coffee grinders is not to use water to clean it. It's dry grind anyway so all you need to do is wipe the inside with a dry tissue. Shame the manufacturer didn't use a better quality material seal, but i think they do say in the manual not to use water anyway.

Mine did not have the hole in the bottom. This method worked. 1) remove the blade (counterclockwise) 2) drop 5-6 drops of silicone oil in the shaft opening 3) Use vice grip/pliers, etc and attempt to twist shaft clockwise and counterclockwise 4) test that it runs. If not, repeat step 3 again. 5) use alcohol (rubbing / isopropyl) to clean the oil in the base 6) re-attach blade

Good vid, simple fix. Btw, your Lavazza decaf is ground as fine as it is because it's to allow you to brew it either as a traditional coarse ground coffee in a regular coffee maker or as an espresso in an espresso machine under pressure. Regular ground coffee is much coarser otherwise.

The capacitor is not for stopping noise going down the line, it's called a starting capacitor and it's common on all AC motors. It briefly increases the motor's starting torque, then taken out of the circuit by a centrifugal switch after the motor approaches maximum speed.

THANKS from Costa Rica... I would have done a quick functionality test just activsting that interna l button directly before potentially reassembling a still faulty ( for some other unknown reason) unit. Yes, the clips looked problematic so insread of opening it up I used a large screwdriver the size of the bottom slot (covered by a silver boilerplte lable) and wrenched a larger hole. The turned it an Voila! Slight damge but recivered by the lable or piece of black electrical tape. I suspect my failure mode was from grinding coarse sugar to make it finer. Again, Thanks

Nice one Vince! Here's a handy hint about your beans. To keep them as fresh as possible, store them in the freezer. Yes, the freezer. Also, only put as many beans in the top of the coffee machine that you're going to use that day. I noticed your machine was very full. Yes, it's not as handy as to have it loaded to the brim but a quick check before making a coffee and small top-up will have you having a better coffee. I learned this from my coffee-roaster/supplier.

Vince, I highly recommend E-6000, B-6000 or B-7000 glue for your projects. These are the differences (as far as I know): E-6000 - (possibly thickest) has the most solid contents and less solvents. It's supposed to dry the fastest. B-6000 - (possibly thinnest) has the least solid contents and more solvents. This one should be the easiest to spread over a bigger surface, such a shoe repair, etc. B-7000 - supposedly the same as B-6000, but more of a generic version.

The best way to grind coffee beans is with a burr grinder. The burr grinder turns more slowly than the blender blade type and does not heat the beans during the grinding process. The burr grinder changes the distance between a fixed and a rotating cutting surface to produce the desired coarse, fine, (or anywhere in between) grind. One more item to put on your repair shopping list!

I have one of those grinders (it works!) but it doesn't grind the coffee finely enough for espresso. You won't get the best taste from the beans. The very expensive grinders are best for espresso - they use a different grinding system. That's why I always buy ground coffee.
@gilles111
@gilles111 Жыл бұрын
The finer you grind your coffee beans the stronger the taste of the coffee will be. Really fine ground (like the Lavazzo) is especially for espresso. If you like a more regular coffee you need a more coarse ground coffee.

I would have fixed 4 plastic blocks inside the housing, then drilled a small pilot hole into each block through the base suitable size for some small self tapping countersunk screws. Countersink the outer holes and then screw in the screws. To ensure no scratching on a worktop, I’d pop four small rubber pads over the screws. This would allow easy removal of the body again. Also, I would slightly enlarge the access hole to allow the ‘first step’ maintenance of a screwdriver in the slot on the main shaft

The issue with all these things is cost - they are currently 30 quid on Amazon, and so I'm assuming the idea is to bin it. Firms must be made to make it screw-openable and charge between 40-50 for the effort of changing the design. Firms must be prevented from this disposable cycle of stuff.

nice repair, but you opened it up so that you could clean the rust and then did not do this (at least not ob screen). This being the case you had the option to open the hole on the bottom with a drill so a screwdriver could be used. If this did not suit, then you had a second opportunity to spin the motor once you discovered the blade is removable for cleaning. Here you could have used a drill chuck to grip the shaft and enable torque to be applied. Ah well, it is still usable.
