In this video I'm going to restore an antique german electric door bell.
I've bought this door bell from an online auction for $45. It was in pretty rough condition, but it was still working, kind of. What I first saw as a quick and easy project turned out to be a really tough and time consuming challenge. Remaking the broken copper part needed a lot of trial and error until I have finally managed to completely recreate that part. Not just making the jig, also the engraving and tumblering. The coils were very tricky as well. At first I planned just to clean them as they were still working, but I've quickly realized that the insulation was damaged and I had to rewind them. Allthough low voltage isn't dangerous rewinding was neccessary to get the job done 100%. It was a good idea though, as the iron cores have been completely rusted under the copper wire. Rewinding required a lot of testing too until I got a satisfying result, as it was my first time doing it. Finding the old newspaper was very cool and even better to actually find a date on that newspaper „1902“. A follower on Instagram was actually able to find that newspaper from 1904 when it was printed. It was actually a patent description. If you click the link below you're actually able to find the exact patent with the exact same text like you can see in the video on the newspaper. With all this information this door bell must have been built somewhat around 1904-1906 in Germany I guess.

You can wrap a metal wire in the threads of screws for better gripping in the lathe and to avoid deforming the threads.

I think my favourite bit was preserving the old newspaper clippings, then adding your own note to your grandson between the new windings. That was so sweet! I also loved how you re-created the makers mark... that was over and above

@@mymechanics yeah, I liked that part too. Small note - If you make such "time capsules" in the future I'd recommend you to use an ordinary pencil, because pencil graphite doesn't fade, unlike pen ink, that in some cases completely disappear in 30 years.

the date of the newspaper has been written on the top of the piece of newspaper August,1902 When his subtitle mentioned that an subscriber found that it printed in 1904. Anyway. I enjoyed especially the sound of the cleaning of the little ball was so funny 😅and you have great equipments to polishing metals. well done.

@@saleem86ful If you check the original document as linked in the description, it is a patent document stamped with a publication (or release?) date of 19th February 1904, but declaring the *validity* of the patent starting on 6th August 1902. The latter date is what is visible on the fragment.

This one had it ALL. Countersink, , chamfering, smoothed edges, “I make a new one,” sandblasting, woodwork, electric repair, sanding, buffing, polishing, electroplating, et al. I am fascinated by your restorations. We own a house built in 1913. One of the first things we did was replace the mid-century electric chime doorbell with a buzzer bell (modern repro). My husband installed a governer to slow the electric pulse and deepen the ring of the bell. Old houses need old doorbells. Obviously, I really loved this restoration of yours.

It really should be an object of pride to realize that the majority of restoration channels use your amazing format as a guide to great restorations. I am an old man and it is so amazing to see items from my generation (and older) restored and preserved instead of destroyed. Not to be blunt, but channels like hand tool rescue came up with this format years before my mechanics did. Doesn't mean this is a bad channel, but the format is a clear copy.

This is just one of those channels where no matter how long it takes for the next upload even half a year at a time and youll still watch it straight away and be hungry for more content as soon as you've finished. The definition of craftsmanship in the dictionary should be a link to your channel

Lots of people say I’m a perfectionist. Your on a whole new level. Congratulations. I will watch all your videos. I clean my small screws using a 3 pound lorton rock tumbler with steel shots and about a tablespoon of dish soap. I usually let it run for 48 hours. It even cleans the threads.

I’ve got to say. You were the first restoration channel that I ever subscribed to because it was clear that you were knowledgeable, you cared about the pieces you worked on, and you were VERY good at what you did. It was clear that “certain other” restoration channels saw this too and began to change their content to closely match yours after your initial success. Some of those channels after changing their format even ended up getting more subscribers to you and I thought that that was a shame. But you kept on released absolutely top notch content, improving your set up, and even expanded to have a second channel and now you have grown so much. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m really glad you have the success you have today and as a long time subscriber I look forward to every upload.

The patent was extremely interesting to read. A clever design for electric trams to be able to signal the driver that they are ready to depart. The driver puts the train into slow forward, but the circuit is broken by breakers in each car. The conductors of each car ensure they are ready to leave, and flip their switches. Only when all cars are ready to leave will the motors energize.

@@ArnoldTohtFan I think that he replaced that wire with a new one. Restoring a faulty enameled wire is by no means a trivial process, electrical, safety and quality wise.

Great video, like all the other videos of yours that I've had the privilege of watching, and great restoration too! I love how you don't hide any of the 'fails' along the way -- like at the end when fully assembled, the restored door bell didn't work! No drama, approach it logically, troubleshoot until the fault is found, and a simple explanation for why it didn't work and the steps you took to remedy it. Masterful! Loved all the jigs you made and especially the little bender and the coil winder which worked perfectly!! A Ton of small parts and tasks all finished to perfection with Excellent camera work and editing!! Nice save on the bell nut...didn't think it would come out as good as it did with out your trade mark -"Make new one". It is a nice job. This is the first electric gadget we learned to make in our early science classes in our childhood. We noticed that this is more than restoration, you made most parts newly. This is probably my favorite restoration. Finding the newspaper pieces was like opening a time capsule. Then when he added the paper denoting the year and restorer, it was like making a new time capsule. The only thing I would have done different would have been to put the old newspaper back in with my note.

I have seen many "restoration" videos but was never impressed until I found this channel in early 2019. No one else even came close to the time, research, and attention to detail that I found here! As a machinist from Canada, I absolutely love your work! It goes to show how important it is to make products out of high quality materials that can stand the test of time and that are able to be beautifully restored by skilled, intelligent individuals like yourself. Not like a lot of garbage that's produced today. You wont see any 2020 doorbells being restored in over 100 years. I hope manufacturers get back to their roots and get away from cheap, mass produced, plastic, unserviceable junk.

Apologies mate but this is highly subjective. You won't find any 2020 typical, run of the mill doorbells being restored in 100 years. No. But there are plenty of custom, expensive versions of things out there you *will* find in 100 years. Mostly things belonging to rich people. And before you say "well of course rich people will have high quality stuff thats worth restoring in 100 years! what about everyone else?" if you think a middle class Joe like you or I had this type of doorbell, or any doorbell at all, 100 years ago you'd be sadly mistaken. Mass produced things has made everything cheaper. Now even the poorest people in society can afford a doorbell, or better yet, it's *expected* they have one.

Yeah but compare the cost of a cheap plastic doorbell to the cost of one of these and you'll see why the market prefers the cheap stuff

Simple electromechanical doorbells are still being made today. They are rare but they still exist. Those that play back some mp3 file (or whatever format they use) likely won't work anymore and can't be repaired. Though a well made mask ROM might actually still be readable even in a hundred years, if it's not blown because of some other fault in the circuit (really new ones use flash memory though, I think, which will be unreadable in a few decades).

It's an electromagnet, so the core should be made of a ferromagnetic material (e.g. iron) to work. It would still be an electromagnet with a wooden core, but much weaker, probably won't be strong enough to pull the arm.

Something I love about these videos is how they showed how beautiful these things were back in their time. Like a lot of stuff from this time period is kind of crusty and rusty looking, like the brass bell was. After a while I kind of assumed everything just looked like that from poorer craftsmanship and less refined materials, aged or not. But after you polished and shined that bell up it makes you realize this would have been as stately and beautiful a piece as anything you'd buy from the Home Depot, etc. today. In a way your videos really help people reconnect with a bygone era with each restoration you do.
