Original Video: • Viktor Tsoi- Kukushka
Lyrics:
How many songs I have left to write?
Tell me, cuckoo, sing to me.
Will I live in a city or in exile,
Will I lay like a stone or burn like a star?
A star.
My Sun - look at me,
My palm has turned into a fist,
And since there is gunpowder - give it fire.
Like that...
Who will follow in my lonely steps?
Strong and courageous
Have laid down their heads on the battlefield.
Few remain in clear memory,
Sober mind and firm hand in formation,
in formation.
My Sun - look at me,
My palm has turned into a fist,
And since there is gunpowder - give it fire.
Like that...
Where are you, carefree freedom?
With whom are you now
Greeting the gentle sunrise? Answer me.
Its good with you and bad without,
My patient shoulders and head go under the whip,
under the whip.
My Sun - look at me,
My palm has turned into a fist,
And since there is gunpowder - give it fire.
Like that...

why does the author ask the cuckoo how many more songs could there be? we are talking about superstition, in Russia, if you hear a cuckoo in the forest, it is customary to ask her how many years of life are left. Analogy for a poet: the number of songs - the number of years

More than 30 years have passed and still goosebumps from this song. There is also a version of "Cuckoo" by Polina Gagarina, but it is perceived as a different song, with the same words but with a different meaning. This is one of the last songs written by Viktor Tsoi.

Thank you for Kino reaction! Kino songs are great and your reactions are great too. As I've already suggested, please listen to "Сказка" (Fairytale), "Пачка сигарет" (A pack of cigarettes) and "Апрель" (April). Also there're some legendary and well known songs as "Blood type": "Стук" (Knock), "Песня без слов" (Song without words), "Перемен" (We want changes) and "Последний герой" (The last hero). Will be waiting for new reactions, and, as always, your videos are great, thank you!

The song is based on the myth that if you hear a cuckoo in the forest, the number of times it makes a sound is how long you have left to live.

I'm already subscribed. You know, but thumbs up is always for you!!! Thanks for Victor. It really means a lot to every Russian and not only ... to everyone who speaks and thinks in Russian. I first heard it in 1987 when I served in the Soviet army and since then Viktor Tsoi has always been with me. This is truly a cult figure for everyone ... and even for those who are not his fans. What really amazes me is that even with a not entirely correct translation, you capture the essence of the text. You are absolutely right when you say that Viktor Tsoi in all his songs tried to understand himself first of all. "Who will follow the lonely trail? Strong and courageous heads laid down in the field, in battle." The image of war, battle, but with whom is this battle? I think that the opposing side here is everyday life, the severity of everyday conformist life, and also, possibly, pressure from the authorities. "Few people remained in bright memory, in a sober mind and with a firm hand in the ranks." Victor feels like the same warrior who was left alone in the field. And he doubts that someone will want to voluntarily repeat his lonely feat, and therefore wonders if all his “unwritten songs” are needed or there is no point in them? But it remains behind the line.

Fortune telling with the cuckoo is an ancient Slavic fortune telling. They ask the cuckoo how many years you have left to live and count how many times it will make its sounds. They also ask when I will meet my loved one. that’s why Victor in his song asks these questions to the cuckoo. A man wants to know his destiny

Victor Tsoi is a legend. Like Jim Morrison in the USA. He died young like him. His father is Korean. But no one will say that Viktor Tsoi is not Russian. He is the soul of Russia, like Pushkin, like Dostoevsky. His contemporaries will die, like me, but his work will live on. Therefore, after 30 years on the walls of our cities, "Viktor Tsoi is alive!!"

Hello! You have a wonderful imaginative mindset!!! The way you heard the meditative sound of music, similar to a person's inner thoughts, is very valuable!!! Few people think about it! But, the moment when at the end of the song giara Tsoi falls silent, and the band continues to play...I have no words - it's cool!!! This is a great example of how to think!!! Thank you!!!

In Russian tradition, there is a superstition, a kind of ritual, where upon hearing the characteristic song of the cuckoo, one asks, "Cuckoo-cuckoo, how much time do I have left to live?" The number of characteristic "coo-coo" sounds is believed to be the answer to how many years one will live. Viktor Tsoi sings about this in his song: "Tell me, cuckoo, how many unwritten songs are there, how much time do I have left?" This is a song about the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. The line "Если есть порох - дай огня" (translated as "If there is gunpowder, give fire") refers to the Russian proverb "there is still gunpowder in the flasks," which implies that a person still has potential or, in a narrower sense, skills left (for example, in old age).

Thank you for telling me that and informing me of Tsoi's life and beliefs. I think when a person strives to talk about freedom, for his soul, for his family, for his country, they all sound the same because we want to break the chains of restriction: emotions and regrets, financial obligations, human freedom and freedom for society. They can all sound familiar even when so different. But I understand what you mean. Thank you very much!

Yes, he really talks a lot about the Sun almost in every song. Also I feel some "sun energy" in Kino's music. I've seen a channeling video with his spirit and there he told that in one of his past lives he was some being that lived on the Sun (or directly near the Sun ), those kind of beings are called plazmoids - imagine some kind of a "ball lighting". He also told that when he was a kid during his life as Viktor in his dreams his "friends" from the this "Sun life" visited him, they were looking like some kind of glowing balls. He told about those dream to his mother and the mother told him to better not talk about those dreams to other people ;) Also, if I'm not mistaken, he told that in one of his other past lives he was a Roman soldier who died in a fight with the "barbarians".

Regarding politics. Viktor himself said in one of his interviews that people interpret too much politics in his songs. For example he has a song called "peremen" ("we want changes") and referring it he said he doesn't think this song is a protest song. If you read the lyrics you can rather interpret this song as some kind of personal or social (related to collective psychology of human beings) song. Also I think, this song, Kukushka, is some sort of a personal song which is not related to Afgan War or Perestroika (maybe only far and indirectly). Rather I'd interpret it as some longing for more personal and artistic freedom because of some family problems and lack of free time (Kino were touring a lot last years) or danger to become a celebrity - in some interview Tsoi literally said that after he became a famous he is afraid of going outside because who knows what is going on in his fans heads, who knows, maybe some crazy fan decides to hit him with some baseball bat on the head from behind.

"Fairytale": Another new day begins, Once again, the morning hits the window with a spotlight; And the phone remains silent: disconnected. Once again, there is no sun in the sky, once again, it's every man for himself in the fight, And it seems to me that the sun is nothing more than a dream. On the screen of the window, a fairytale with an unhappy ending. A strange fairytale. And rain beats down like a machine gun, and autumn walks through the streets; And the wall of brick-clouds is strong. The trees got sick with a plague, they got sick even in the spring; And the leaves that waved to us from above will fall from our palms. There, outside the window, a fairytale with an unhappy ending. A strange fairytale. And then, she will come. (I'm not sure, that Death is "she" in English, so you need to know, that Viktor is talking about Death) Get ready, she will say, let's go, return the body to the earth. Well, the body didn't quite finish singing. Well, the body didn't receive enough love. A strange affair. There, outside the window, a fairytale with an unhappy ending. A strange fairytale.

"A pack of cigarettes": I sit and look at an unfamiliar sky from an unfamiliar window And I don't see a single familiar star I walked on all the roads, here and there Turned around and couldn't see any footprints But if there's a pack of cigarettes in my pocket Then everything isn't so bad for today And a plane ticket with silver wings That, as it takes off, leaves only a shadow on the ground And no one wanted to be guilty without wine And no one wanted to stoke the fire with bare hands ("To stoke the fire with bare hands" is a phraseological unit meaning “Do work with someone else’s hands” or “Use the results of someone else’s work”) But without music, life isn't beautiful And without music, I don't want to fade away But if there's a pack of cigarettes in my pocket Then everything isn't so bad for today And a plane ticket with silver wings That, as it takes off, leaves only a shadow on the ground And if there's a pack of cigarettes in my pocket Then everything isn't so bad for today And a plane ticket with silver wings That, as it takes off, leaves only a shadow on the ground

"April": Above the ground, it's freezing Touch everything - it is all ice Only in my dreams do drops sing And snow falls like a wall Snow falls all day long And behind that wall, April is waiting He'll come and bring spring with him And disperse the gray clouds' army But when we all look into his eyes Sorrow will look back at us from his eyes And the doors of houses will open So sit down, for there's no truth in your feet (a Russian phraseological unit, which just means "go take a sit, don't stand") And when we all look into his eyes We'll see the light of the sun in those eyes Countless wounds on the body Difficult steps Only a star burns in the chest And April will die And be born anew And come forever He'll come and bring spring with him And disperse the gray clouds' army But when we all look into his eyes Sorrow will look back at us from his eyes And the doors of houses will open So sit down, for there's no truth in your feet And when we all look into his eyes We'll see the light of the sun in those eyes

Ya vernus' (Я вернусь) I’ll return Я мечтаю вернуться с войны, I am dreaming to return from war During which I was born and brought up На руинах нищей страны At impoverished ruined soil Под дождями из слез. Under rain of tears drop-out But the tyrant’s not buried yet That declared war on this soil And there seems to be no plug or end Этой войне. To this war. I am not going to presage I am aware I’ll return to stage Maybe in some another age Not at fool’s cage but land of genius И, поверженный в бою, Being a battle casualty Я воскресну и спою I’ll rise from grave and will sing At very first day that we’ll celebrate вернувшейся с войны. Returning from the war. But when battle sometimes slackens off At clock-hour halt, but not in line Я о мире и о любви About peace and about love Сочиняю и пою. I compose, sing and write The opponents heave sigh of relief And my friends just say “It’ a jolt…” All of them misjudge me by their own belief Это привал. It’s clock-hour halt Привал. Just halt. Tomorrow I’ll show my rampage I am aware I’ll return to stage Maybe in some another age Not at fool’s cage but land of genius И, поверженный в бою, Being a battle casualty Я воскресну и спою I’ll rise from grave and will sing At very first day that we’ll celebrate вернувшейся с войны. Some parts of this sound very silly to me as a Russian. You're projecting sentiments purposely formulated in the western society towards the ideological enemy. So you immediately jump to interpreting some of these vague lyrics, that can mean anything, with simplistic paradigms that you have about this time and place. Kino -> Soviet Union -> bad, oppression, gulag -> the lyrics must be talking about struggle against USSR, it's end and future. Watch Soviet movies, read Soviet authors (the ones people actually read in USSR, not the anti-Soviet dissidents purposely popularized in the west), try to learn how the society functioned, what was actually on people's minds. Otherwise sounds silly. Apologies if I sound rude.
