I'm glad that you mentioned driving habits! I used to drive a muscle car and have owned many sports cars, but the moment I purchased a hybrid vehicle......I was always playing the "mpg game." Always trying to max out the best mileage I could! And even in the manual of a hybrid vehicle, they explain to you about timing you're driving for traffic lights or merging onto interstates. These two things alone made my miles per gallon change on every vehicle I ever drove. All of a sudden I felt like I had gained maturity as an adult lol! But yes, there is absolutely no reason to get to 45 mph just to slam on the brakes at a red light. You could probably go 30 knowing the red light is ahead of you, or even 25 and when you get to the light it's already green. So you never had to go from zero to 25 and that saved you a tremendous amount of gas. You're just continuing on from 25 back to 45. Not rushing on to the interstate and realizing that you do have a merge lane where you can gain the momentum needed over time, definitely adds to much better gas mileage because you're trying to get from a very low speed to 70 miles an hour quickly.

Good advice for most people, only problem is that if the speed limit is 65, there is no way you should go 50.

I had lean codes on bank 2.... fixed vacuum leaks on hoses, leaking intake, leaking injector seals and three weak coils. This is a Ford 2v 4.6 with 265k miles. Gas mileage like new now.

All else being equal, I think your last points about people's driving habits have the most impact on mpg. It amazes me how inefficiently (to say nothing of how distracted) most people drive. It is truly mind boggling.

I very much agree with the timing the lights/stop signs point. And yes, it is very annoying when riding shotgun and someone is not paying attention to their speed and timing. Driving a manual helps as you can stay in the same gear and modulate the accelerator. Automatics are so bad for building good driving habits.
