The purveyors of a unique brand of 'blazing desert metal' return with 'Shehili' (released by earMUSIC on 3rd May 2019), which is perhaps the most accomplished and satisfying release of their fifteen-year career.
LIke the fierce Saharan wind that gave the album its name, the twelve tracks will blow you away with its combination of epic soundscapes, enchanting eastern melodies, North African beats and steeped in the folklore of their Tunisian homeland.
Reflecting the geographic diversity of a country bordered by desert plains to the South, the Atlas Mountains to the West and the Mediterranean Sea to the East, the Myrath's music is founded upon on a rich and diverse sonic landscape with instrumentation and compositions that are equally beguiling and powerful.
In this extended interview, Andy Rawll speaks to lead singer Zaher Zorgati and long-time producer Kevin Codfert about how the original line-up of the band formed in 2001 with the initial name of 'X-tazy' and then adopted their current name (meaning 'legacy') in 2007 with the release of their debut album 'Hope', with longstanding keyboard player Elyes Bouchoucha providing confident lead vocals.
Having been impressed by Zaher's Dio-like voice, and seeking a dedicated front-man to take their live performances to the next level, the son of Sousse (a coastal town 200km South of Tunis), the band's expanded line-up recorded the well-received 'Desert Call' in 2010.
Since then, the band has gone from strength-to-strength, finessing their unique 'blazing desert metal' sound and strengthening their songwriting to deliver the acclaimed 'Legacy' album in 2016.
'Shehili' not only surpasses that record in sonic ambition it also finally delivers an epic, windswept soundscape that befits the legacy, influences and capability of this talented band.
