It always boils my blood when you ask doctors to test for things and they are against it. It feels like they would rather treat the issue than diagnose. Thank you for sharing this story.

I was 42 in 2009 when I got my diagnose for prostate CA with a PSA score of 72 and a Gleasom scroe of 9. I had no prostatectomie as it was not local anymore so I got radiaton and hormone therapie. in 2014 I received the news that I was Palliative from that moment on. In 2018 I got another form of cancer (Oropharynx CA) and it did not look good. It is now 2023 and I health from the Oropharynx CA but I am still Palliative Prostate CA patient. Since 2018 back on hormonial therapie but still alive and enjoying every bit of it. I do recognise the control in the loin area which i have learned to live with since 2009. I understand the nerves after giving blood and waiting for results every time. All I can say is keep enjoying every day and find joy in the little things. It is great to see and hear your story. you are a rock 👍😉

Mike, Jack The Cat here. I am post PCa 16 years(I was 52) and as my treatment I had radiation and according to my Uro they apparently missed a small part off the gland so I still have a PSA score of about 1.5 and it drifts up or down a small bit. I see the Uro for blood work every six months and will for the foreseeable future. So, I certainly understand having to deal with the mind demons-it's a constant daily battle. However, I have no symptoms and never did. Hopefully for both of us and all the guys reading that the future is long and bright. To all that are reading...I was 52 years old and never had a single symptom-cancer was found by a very diligent primary care physician that stayed on top of my health. So, don't wait for symptoms, and INSIST that your Dr do a PSA anytime you are over 40-50 range, it may very well save your life. Keep us posted, Mike...Jack

Had to argue with GP for a PSA test and I am over 20 your senior. Glad to say it was normal. The irony is that I used to do the test for a living and we both knew that this test is not specific for prostate cancer but currently it is the best that we have. I hope that fundraising may pay for research into a more specific test. Great to hear that you are doing so well, all the best in the future.

Hi Mike. You may recall that I went for brachytherapy about 18 months ago, after radiotherapy many years earlier. On my latest checkup, the results back just at the beginning of this week, I can safely say it didn't work! Initially the psa dropped to near zero, but it has begun climbing again. The MRI and Gamma scans don't show anything, but the count says there are still some cells lurking somewhere, but until they grow some more, they don't show up. So - another six months for another test. The Doc says as long as the count stays below 10, or if it starts to double up the increase, they can't do anything - so it's just a case of wait and see! If they can't find it, they can't treat it. As I said to him, I'm not worried about it, I have no dependants, and my wife died years ago. My long-term hope is - the government will finally approve of euthenasia, so when I reach the end of the journey, I can say "That's enough", and be 'switched off', rather than have the indignity of fading away slowy, incontinent, and off my head on morphine or whatever they use then, as my wife (and I) suffered.

Firstly I'm so pleased you're doing so well 1 year on. I went through a scare a few years back with a high PSA ,was sent for tests but luckily all came back clear. What does annoy me is I still have to push my GP to send me for a PSA test every 2 years, they seem very reluctant to do so even though the information available suggests anyone over 50 should be having regular tests.

Mike, you have my utter respect. To talk about this in public is not easy at all. To all the men (and wives/partners), it is definitely NOT just an "old man's disease". I was diagnosed at age 46, 11 years ago. No family history, no symptoms, I didn't know anything about it, but thankfully my GP quietly took a PSA test when I complained about a groin pain (which turned out to be entirely coincidental). There are lots of videos on KZfaq to educate yourself. Please support Prostate Cancer UK if you can - cervical cancer research has traditionally received far more funding in the past, because us men are ashamed to talk. Let's stop dying silently!

I'm 45 and saw your original video encouraging folks to get a PSA. So next time I had my yearly physical, I asked my doctor for a PSA test. Thankfully all normal, but interestingly my doctor wasn't planning on running the PSA test had I not specifically asked. Your message is incredibly valuable. Not all doctors are up to date with best practices so you really have to look out for yourself. Anyway, thank you again for selflessly putting your personal life out there for the benefit of everyone. You're a legend. Looking forward to seeing what your TV appearance is. All the best! -Tom

Hey my brother Mike, I'm glad you're doing well and staying on top of this thing we both and many others have experienced. My story follows yours very closely, but my PSA started to slowly rise a year & a half after my robotic prostatectomy. Right now is about just over 2 yrs since my surgery & my surgeon and I are trying a few things to knock the rising PSA back down, and monitor the progress as far out as we can, then probably salvage radiation unless new advances come around, which are happening yearly. I'll keep you up to speed on my progress as I get it myself. Cheers my friend 👍

It’s completely normal to have no control. Don’t expect too much. You have had major surgery! Your bladder sphincter needs to recover plus having a catheter for a while also relaxes your bladder. I had mine for 12 days so you are very lucky! I am now 18 months post surgery and 95% continent with just the occasional very small leak. It took me 3-4 months to see improvements, yes it gets you down but you have to just keep telling yourself it’s normal and you just have to wait for your body to heal. I actually stopped pelvic floor exercises on week one but it was due to pains it caused me. Good luck with your recovery . You WILL get there okay .

Hi Mike, thanks so much for your open discussion of this issue. They do the PSA screening plus the manual exam routinely here in the States, starting at sometime between age 45 and 50, so I've gotten the uncomfortable examination several times now. My grandfather died of this, so the need to be careful hits home.

I had prostate cancer 15 years ago after going to the doctor with a sore shoulder at age 54. Dr suggested a PSA and my journey was remarkably identical to yours ending in a radical prostatectomy as well. My nerves were not touched and 15 years on I am doing great. A slight hiccup in the PSA a couple of years ago but all settled. For the sake of a simple blood test get your PSA done. IF I hadn't gone to the doctors with a sore shoulder I wouldn't have had anyone suggest the PSA so I may not have been here to tell the story as the surgery got it just before it spread. Thank you for telling your story!!!

Hi Mike! Good to hear you're recovering well. I'm relatively young myself (32) so Im not too worried about getting tested yet, but from what I've learned over the years about people like yourself talking about Prostate cancer, Here in Australia the docs recommend getting tested annually from age 40. Can't hurt to start then, and it's a super un-invasive procedure.

Mike, nicely done. Congrats on your 1 year anniversary! So glad that things have worked out for you. You’ve done a great job explaining the disease, treatments and alternatives. As you have so aptly pointed out, there is no real reason that any man should not have a PSA blood test! I’m 69. Mine was caught early as my doctor did a psa blood test during my annual checkup. and I had tons of options! I was treated with stereotactic radiation at Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC. I picked up a couple of “known treatment side effects”, but - it sure beats the alternative. I am now 4 years cancer free. Again, congrats and nicely done. Jack

Hi Mike, well done you for getting the message out there, warts and all, with this subject that is exactly what is needed. As you have found, getting a PSA test without obvious symptoms is difficult and it shouldn’t be. I’m a firm believer in a screening programme for over 50’s - yes, it will yield some false positives as PSA can be affected by many things but if one of those people goes on to have a scan which actually confirms cancer involvement then that is potentially a life saved. My dad and a good friend were both diagnosed ‘by accident’ and both are doing well 3 -5 years later despite being stage 3 and 4 respectively Once again Mike , well done for getting the message out there, take care.

Hi Mike, I really appreciated your time and effort to share this with your viewers. I love your watch videos and of course this topic when you iniitially shared it, scared me, but I am currently getting tests done as I'm 50 also, and hopefully I'm good, but either way I wanted to sincerely thank you for your sharing, it will help a lot of people get checked. You mentioned you had to wrangle with your doctor to get the PSA test, I'm in Canada and I've had a huge challenge just getting a physical, nevermind the right blood tests. They are so obtuse at preventing illness, but your sharing helped me get the gumption to advocate for myself despite doctors thinking it isn't necessary. Congratulations on your 1 year anniversary and thank you so much for talking through such a difficult topic to share, you have done a great service for your viewers. I can't say I'm not scared to learn there's an issue, but I know it's better to get things checked than just hide from it. Hoping you stay on a path towards better health and more great watchmaking sir, thanks again, sincerely!

Know your doing the right thing for you and your loved ones. Catch anything early you can deal with it. It’s sad to hear how hard it has been for you in Canada, unbelievable almost. It’s not easy for me to get in front of a Doctor but I can on the NHS. I also now intend to pay for a deep dive medical every few years that will test me for all kinds. I feel it’s probably the best money I will ever spend on myself. Good luck with your results and like I said in the video it’s essential to have PSA regularly, at our age every few years or so. A slight rise means you are catching whatever it is early .

So I'm preaching to anyone who will listen about cardiac care and losing that male machismo of " I don't need no doctor" . Hoepfully I wont need your advice :). No offense.. Thank you. Future is hopeful although the dread of a reoccurrence can be haunting if you let your mind go there. Probably why I busy myself into the late hours working on watches. Love what you do BTW

Good to see you in good health! I think we would love to see 1h long video of disassembly and then another 1h of putting it back together ;-) Funny thing, I've check around in Ireland how it is with PSA test as I'm heading to be 50 very soon and found some of this: "There currently is no clear evidence that screening using PSA testing could save lives. There is also clear evidence that the PSA test can lead to tests and treatment for some men that cause harm as prostate cancer can grow very slowly." Need to save some money and visit my GP to talk about it.

That’s the mantra that’s said often and it’s very misleading. It’s almost like they don’t want to do anything until you present symptoms but the stats suggest symptoms are when it’s spread out of the prostate… There is no screening and PSA can lead to some false positive but 99% of prostate cancer diagnosis start with a high PSA reading . Some GPs are now revising their advise including mine. Not so long ago the biopsy was done from up the backside and through into the prostate. This lead to a dirty environment and high risk of infection. The more common practice now is to go through your perineum which although for me was like medieval torture as you are awake it’s much less risky and generally they are only doing a biopsy after MRI results to limit again that risk.

Hope you are doing well. Your courage and honesty are inspiring. It's not easy talking about some issues, but they need to be talked about . My son collects watches and he loves the vintage ones. He wishes he had more time to learn to restore watches, but life gets in the way. Anyway i sent him your channel . Best wishes to you.

Thank you Mike for your bravery! You look great. I couldn't talk about this topic on air.(?) In the States, the doctor orders blood work that includes PSA test. Then he puts on the glove! I look forward to your next video. Wish you continued good health!

That’s good to know however not all Gp will check you PSA at a young age. This is why I want to shout about it. The American statistics for this disease are just as shocking as here most cases are not caught early .

I feel you mate. My physician all of the sudden, and on the yearly routine exams that I have every year, when I went to find out about the results of my Xrays and ultrasounds, she said that I have an enlarged prostate and that a urologist is the next thing I have to go to. I had a year before a urine infection and I also have a difficulty to pee. My doctor says it's not something serious but still... Long story short I indeed had the urologist to do the finger in the bum and also have again an ultrasound at the kidney and the bladder and blood and urine samples. Now it's a matter of time for getting my next appointment and know what is going on or hopefully isn't.
