My RV Works, Inc., Certified RV Technician, Darren Koepp, discusses Propane Regulators for RV systems and finishes the video with an installation of a replacement Propane Regulator on a truck camper RV.
He talks about a variety of aspects of Liquid Propane and Propane Regulators, including:
- Facts about Propane Regulators
- How the Regulator manages the Liquid Propane in your RV
- Some properties of Liquid Propane
- Oil in your Propane system and why it gets in there (and what "doesn’t" cause it)
- Regulator installation “Do’s and Do Not’s” and
- How-to make the Auto-Changeover Switch on your LP Regulator work properly.

I am a level two technician out in the SD Black Hills area, and i have to thank you for teaching me so much more than a black and white textbook and some basic systems. Thanks! We are finishing our "How To Start A Mobile RV Repair Business" that is now available on Patreon: www.patreon.com/myrvworks. Once we are done filming and editing that series, we expect to be able to begin work on an LP course that will be available through our academy. Our goal would be to have that release January 2024.

Inches of water not mercury. Mercury is 13.5 times as dense as water. Atmospheric pressure is 32 ft of water at sea level. LP appliance pressure is very low. To talk mm of mercury would be very fractional. To say 11-14 inches is convenient and easy to remember At 0 F LP is about 28 psi. Multiply by 27.7 to get inches of water. 775 inches of water But LP is different where you get it. Different companies will add different butanes and ethane’s in different ratios. Some mixes work better in different temperature ranges. Propane is C3H8. LP is not just liquid propane Been an RV tech a few years Appreciate your videos and insight

Your timing could not be better! I thought I ran both my tanks dry yesterday. want to pull both tanks to get them filled and found the driver side tank full. When I took the pigtail off there was oil at the connection. Last year I replace that pigtail and the single stage regulator on that side. My two stage regulator with the changeover is on the passenger side. Going to change the two stage regulator today. I was wondering where the oil came from. Did not know if It came from the two stage changeover regulator all the way down the line 5 feet and through the single stage regulator and ended up at my propane tank. I was really scratching my head. Thanks!

Awesome channel, you are definitely my go-to!! Question: I changed out my curb-side single-stage regulator. It is red and rated 30 PSI. I assume that is OK. I seem to understand from your video that that is an acceptable PSI rating for the off-side single-stage regulator. Could you please confirm? Love your videos!! Recommending them to my friends all the time! Well done, Darren, and thank you very much!!

Also when coming back from refill and the vertical bottle is laid down horizontal you need to give it a few hours before opening up the valve to ensure all liquid is drained.

They can and do get over filled. I fill propane pretty much for a living. Just take it back and either have them vent it or get yoy sone welder gloves and vent it yourself. Could also get a unregulated weed torch and go fire it up and burn some brush for a little bit.

My 1981 C class RV has a fixed LP tank underneath near the rear bumper. I don't believe I've seen a regulator in the system. I have also noticed the stove has a lot of orange flame. Is there an air/fuel mixture on the stove burners or do I need a regulator? Update, It has been pointed out to me that I do have regulator on the LP tank.

Thanks for all the videos! I have oil in propane system. So much so that it's coming out of the furnace exhaust burnt and black and lots of white smoke. You can smell it and being anywhere close irritates your eyes. I cracked open my connection at the regulator and it looked like vegetable oil dripping out. Did you do a follow up video on best way to blow out system?
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks Жыл бұрын
I have not made that video yet, but what you will do is remove the hose that's connected to your regulator and angle it somewhere safe. Then go Upstream to the farthest LP Appliance, disconnect where the fitting connects and use compressed air and just blow out all the crap that's in the line.

Question, and sorry it it has already been asked. What Hi flow regulator do you recommend for a auto change over system with two tanks? I installed a tankless water heater, and it is starved for Propane. Also, you mentioned the use of hoses with Red caps that screw onto the bottles, red designates high flow. Could not find these online.

Darren, So after viewing this video, I'm now shocked that I can go into an RV center and just purchased an LP regulator and install it myself as a DIY project. How can this be? Are the tolerances of regulators such that would allow a DIY'r to successfully R&R a regulator with acceptable results (specified pressures) and little safety concerns?

Hey Darren...great job on the video again, taking notes here. I do have a "Q" for you. I noticed that where my hotwater tank is (Bounder 1993 31') below the SF35F furnace - I have of course copper gas line into it. there are no breaks as far as 90 elbows or couplers go....I would like to add a small tee of that size of supply line and a cap on it - so I may drain any impurities that might find it's way into the propane line. It would be the lowest location of the line and lower then the manifold too. Is this realistically ok too do so it would be easier to check to be sure line is clear or even to flow gas through it in order to check regulators?? your input on this please? Thanks for the shots of the deer and the cat in the background....always enjoyed the video crashers... LOL

What happens with auto change when you have 3 cylinders. Two on driver side one on curb side. I have been using with valves closed on reserve tanks
@MyRVWorks
@MyRVWorks 2 жыл бұрын
I would be curious how that would be plumbed properly. Two cylinders would have to be slave together in a three cylinder configuration. The auto changeover only has connections for two inputs. Per NFPA 1192 you can only have a total of 60 lb of propane in an RV and no single cylinder larger than a 40 pounds...

Thank you for that, when I started this channel, years ago, I tried to be all things to all people, and that just did not work out LOL. I understand who my the audience is now, and those folks that think I ramble are not my target audience so I don't serve to them - they're just the background noise. My audience is those folks that really like deep diving and truly understanding a system like I do. I enjoy explaining these systems so my viewers can go forth and figure it out all those strange trails that something can take and then be the true heroes in mastering their systems.
