What to do at Mysore? What places to visit in Mysore? Things to do in Mysore? If you have all these questions - then watch this video. Mysore I Chamundi Hills I Fog on Top of Chamundi Hills I Beautiful Scenic View of Mysore City
#Chamundi Hills at #Mysore or #Mysuru is one of the top eight sacred hills in South India is located at a distance of 13 kms from Mysore city. Chamundi Hill rises to a height of 3,489 feet from sea level and is visible from a distance itself while traveling towards Mysuru.
You can reach top of this hill either by a series of 1008 stone stairs or through a good motorable road.
In the forest surrounding this hill, there are varieties of trees, birds and animals.
While going up the hills, a bird’s eye view of Mysuru can be seen and several prominent places can also be spotted.
While proceeding towards the Chamundi Temple, the statue of ‘Mahishasura’ with a sword in one hand and a cobra in the other, attracts the visitors.
According to popular legends, many years ago, a buffalo demon named Mahishasura was wreaking havoc in heaven and earth.
He had been gifted a boon by Brahma that he could be killed by no man.
For this reason, Mahishasura was slowly winning every battle he started.
The Gods found a loophole to Brahma’s boon and goddess Durga was given divine powers to make her stronger than Mahishasura.
Durga in the form of Goddess Chamundeshwari with her new powers and a lion as her vehicle, fought Mahishasura atop this hill for ten days and finally killed him.
In her honour, the hill was named as Chamundi Hill.
This day is celebrated throughout India as Dasara and symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
This influenced the naming of the city as Mahishooru which literally means the village of Mahishasura.
Later British modified this name as Mysore and further Government of Karnataka changed it to Mysuru in the year 2014.
Further ahead is Sri Chamundeshwari Temple which is the crowning glory of Mysuru.
Chamundeswari temple is dedicated to Sri Chamundeswari, the titular deity of the Mysore Royal Family also described as ‘Mahishasura Mardini’ for having killed the buffalo headed demon Mahishasura.
The temple is of a quadrangular structure. Built in Dravidian style, it consists of the Main Doorway, Entrance, Navaranga Hall, Antharala Mantapa, Sanctum Sanctorum, and Prakara.
There is a beautiful seven-tier Gopura or pyramidal tower at the entrance and a ‘Vimana’ atop the sanctum sanctorum.
Atop the ‘Shikara’, the tower at the entrance, are seven golden ‘Kalashas’.
Krishnaraja Wodeyar III repaired the shrine in 1827 A.D and built the present beautiful tower at the entrance.
Blessed by the Goddess, Krishnaraja Wodeyar, an ardent devotee of the mother Goddess, presented to the temple a ‘Simha-vahana’ (A lion-shaped vehicle) and other animal cars and jewels of value. The cars are used even now for processions on special religious occasions.
During evening, sipping a cup of coffee or tea, the look of Mysore will be just glorious from top of this hill.
Small shops near your car parking area will definitely give you local aromas and must buy small memories from this hill.
My only disappointment during this visit was that I could not visit the gigantic Nandi bull which is carved out of a single piece of black granite. The access road to this place is washed out due to recent heavy rain and landslide.
