Mystery Behind Thousands Of Shivalingas at Sahasralinga, Sirsi, Uttara Kannada, India #sirsi. Sahasralinga is located around 14 kms from the Sirsi city . To reach this beautiful place, you need to travel about 12.5 kms on scenic Sirsi Yellapura Road. Take a left turn before Hulagola town and further drive 1.5 kms, in more scenic road, to reach parking spot of Sahasralinga.
You need to climb down about 20 to 30 steps, to get near the river, where Sahasralingas are clearly visible.
Sahasralinga is actually in the middle of river Shalmala, and is famous for being the location where around one thousand Shiva lingas are carved on the rocks within the river.
The numerous Shiva lingas scattered across the stream make it a unique viewing experience.
The place looks truly mysterious and gorgeous at the same time when you get to see so many lingas together playing hide and seek with the river waters
According to historical records, these Shiva lingas were built by King Sadashivaraya, belonging to Vijayanagar Kingdom, during 1678 to 1718.
Here each Shiva linga is in different shape, probably because the Lingas are carved on the rocks found in the river, as well as on the riverbed.
Such a variety of Lingas cannot be seen elsewhere in India and this speciality makes this tour really unique experience for the visitors.
But, are you aware that thousands of miles away from India, there is twin Sahasralinga at a lovely city named Siam Reap at Cambodia. So isn’t that an interesting fact!!!
Wherever there is Shiva linga the Bull-god Nandi or Basava is seated facing Shivalinga.
There will be heavy rush and crowd on Mahashivrathri day on this riverbed when thousands of pilgrims come to offer their prayers to Lord Shiva.
Get a free fish pedicure when you walk in the flowing river of Shalmala. Its really fun and a great experience with the fish nibbling away at your feet.
Given the force of river water, some of these lingas have gone bad and some are dislodged or completely disfigured.
Those who wish to witness this miracle, it is suggested to visit the place only when the water level is low. Because otherwise, the lingas remain underwater and may not be clearly visible.
A little distance away from Sahasralinga and parking spot, there is a hanging bridge over river Shalmala. This bridge which reminds me of Laxman Jhoola hanging bridge at Rishikesh.
This bridge is quite new and built in the year 2011 and connects about 14 villages of Sirsi with Bhairumbe Gram Panchayat.
This bridge is quite popular among youngsters and ideal location to get some great shots for your insta reels.
Make your own arrangements for food and drinking water as there are no shops or restaurants nearby.

A beautiful sight with several hundred lingas & basavas in the holy river Shalmala is quite unique and truly an amazing experience
The area is serene with full of divine environment found amidst the lush green nature, making it a worthy place not only to relax but also provide you with mental solace.
This visit would truly be a memorable experience to me as I had the opportunity to enjoy beautiful scenery and also could feel divine vibration at the sight of these groups of Shiv lingas.

How to Reach:
Sahasralinga is on the way to Yellapur from Sirsi. Best way to reach this place is by your personal vehicle or taxi.
Alternatively, you can take public transport. Get down at 'Hulgol' bus stop and walk towards 'Hulgol' and from the main road for about 2km to reach this place.
Nearest Town is Sirsi (17kms), better to visit during November to March. Sirsi is at 425km from Bangalore. Nearest airport to Sirsi is Hubli (102km), and Rail head is Talaguppa (54km). Sirsi is linked to other states and cities by buses, where good numbers of hotels and lodges would provide food and accommodation to visitors.
