Part 1 ended up in my feed, and I subbed because that, and this one so far, are golden. Here's to hoping the rest of your content is as intriguing as the myst videos are.

How do these masterpieces not have more views? They're epic. Thank you for explaining all of this. I was thinking about taking another shot at the game since I'm old now and can understand everything. 😂. Haven't played it since it came out back in the 90s. I remember me and a friend rode our bikes to Wendy's and this old guy had just bought a copy of Myst and had it with him while he ate. He started to tell us about it which is how I find out about it. This was sometime back in the 90s.

There was a writing somewhere about the two trap books in the library and how they were created for greedy adventurers. Atrus knew that something suspicious was going on and decided to create them as part of a security measure. They were on display even when the brothers were around and Atrus told the boys never to use them as they were dangerous ages, but the boys suspected that they were ages filled with gold and riches. In not telling his son's the truth about them, he not only fueled their curiosity, but succeeded in catching the greedy adventurers he was so worried about to begin with.

Luckily Atrus is a very wise and virtuous man because he could have easily created death traps instead of prison books.

I just finished Myst for the first time and now I've found these videos. I'm so glad you've put together such helpful explainations of the story, and it looks like you'll be releasing them as I'm finishing each of the games, which is just perfect! While I'm more curious about the larger plot of these games to begin with, I would eventually love to see an in depth look at all the ages, as reading about them was a really fascinating part of the game for me. :) Thanks for making these videos!

Starting in the mid-'90s, I played the Myst series for years. I still have the binder of 70 pages of notes, sketches, and comments on my conjectures about plausibilities and my mental state about playing the games. I miss the euphoria of finally "connecting" clues and solving puzzles. I know other game producers (including Cyan) have similar games, but I hesitate to play them because I don't want to sully my memories of playing Myst with "but it's not Myst" feelings. On another point, Mr. Necrovarius, your videos' story arcs and editing fully engage me. I teach Premiere Pro at a local college and, dude, you've got chops! Okay. Time to snuff the candle on this comment. (Yes, I loved the tension ("Will he blow it out? Will he?")-and-release ("Yes! I was right!") effect with which you ended this video.)

And thank you for the quick reply and for teasing the Riven lore video. Another quick note: I read that apparently the trap books are actually just "artistic license" and a retcon. The books were still being written when the first two games were made, so the lore wasn't fully set in stone, but sounds and sights do not transmit through a linking panel. The real canonical answer is that Sirrus and Achinar were in normal full ages, but simply did not have linking books to get back, nor the ability to make new ones. The "stuck in a void" mechanic was kept to keep things simple for the gameplay and story of the game.
@necrovarius2257 ай бұрын
I actually talk about this in our next video. Since it was a hot topic when the game came out.

Oh cool! Nice videos by the way! I kind of went down the Myst rabbit hole. Again. Again... Again. As an unrelated musing, every so often I wonder what's happened to the D'ni (earth) descriptive book. I guess it doesn't matter, but since people can still make linking books to earth, that would imply a functioning descriptive book. So... Where is it? A riddle for the ages. @@necrovarius225

13:45 It's interesting to note that the Myst comic isn't canon, because Cyan didn't approve of the final script. One of the things they were opposed to was the fact that Sirrus and Achenar had their names swapped. So even if you consider the comics as part of the lore, I think it's pretty safe to think it was Sirrus who strayed first from their father's teachings.

@@necrovarius225 Achenar redeemed himself by sacrificing himself for his sister's sake. Also, if you look at their personalities both brothers are malevolent but Sirrius is clearly the leader between the two and is a proud sociopath. It seems that Achenar is like his grandfather with enough Atrus mixed in to be redeemable later on while Sirrius takes after the grandfather.
