Mamlambo Fossils

4 жыл бұрын

Craig, aka Doctor Mud, invited me along for a hunt in the Miocene era shore of North Canterbury. Even with the extreme wind, we managed to find some awesome fossils and had a really good time!
Find of the day for me was a mysterious bone cluster which I took in to the Canterbury museum for some help in identifying. One of the senior curators, Paul, had a look at it and came back with some interesting information. I added this right at the end of the video.
Turns out I had an interesting concretion just sitting in my garden. What I thought was a crab claw sticking out, was in fact a piece of bone! The museum are going to do an exploratory prep on it to see if it's worth spending more time on it.
Thanks to Paul at the Canterbury museum for taking the time to have a look at my finds. Hopefully it is something worthwhile!

Yeah, they were really decent as well. Spent a bit of time with me and showed me around behind-the-scenes. I came away understanding the geology in the area much better. Seeing fossils in real life will also help me spot them in the future I think.

This is from a year ago. Hope the one rock was partial penwuin, did you prep it? Did they take the concreation from your garden? Really happy for you for you are very enthusiastic!

Hahahah I thought you would like it! I always keep an eye out for interesting rocks. Sometimes there are nice hollows in the fossils that get filled with quartz and other crystals.

@@MamlamboFossils that's so cool! That's one thing I need to do more when I'm out is keep an eye out for more interesting things. I have found a few random rocks with big quartz vesicles and they are so nice.

Another great find. Keep up the good work. Over 90 percent of the new discoveries are made by enthusiasts like you. Let us know what your paleontologist associate determines. The penguin fossil are really interesting, I have a fossil Miocene penguin break from South America I'm studying. I'm still working on the giant Terror bird casts here in Florida. Keep up the good work.

Thanks David! The Canterbury museum are very good at encouraging us amateurs and being patient when we bring all kinds of random bits of bone to them 😄 I am trying to fossil prep this bone cluster at the moment, it's very slow going! Good luck with those casts - sounds so interesting!

@@MamlamboFossils Dude. I guessed your accent from listening to your voice for several hours during your videos. I could hear the German gutteral stop and your st endings and ts word sounds and at times you replace a v with a w sound. Awesome. Nice to meet you mate. Is that the word you use. Lovely channel. My wife and I especially love hearing your little assistant's voice. From her shirt sleeves, I presume she is a little girl? And once you finished early one morning and you said you were able to meet the family for breakfast. So, we guessed some things from your talking. Always wanted to travel to New Zealand. My wife has a close friend she met in France from Auckland NZ. She moved with her hubby to the bush nearby. Thank you so much for replying!
