Auto upvoting every show you put out because they are awesome and though I don't agree with half the proposals the reality is this channel invites conversation, has great guests and hosts (And crew), and is just wonderful eye-candy as one falls asleep, this is a forever channel to sub to.

In the 1960's an astronomer who specialized in comets (prime discoverer of several) gave a talk I attended. He gave his definition of a comet -- verbatim to what I'd read in most astronomy books as the definition of an asteroid. During the question/answer period, I asked him what he thought the difference was. He smiled (as if thrilled to be asked) and then insisted asteroids and comets were two extremes of the exact same thing, with the same variations, and concentrating on their differences blinded us to their similarities. Since then, with our better telescopes, many more "in between" objects have been discovered..

Do you remember his name? Or what definition he gave?
@friendlyone2706
@friendlyone2706 26 күн бұрын
@@avishalom2000lm The definition was verbatim the one used "The Music of the Spheres", at the time my favorite general astronomy, which I checked out from the city library numerous times & read cover to cover each time. After just discovering a larger than average very long range comet, the professor gave talks at several universities, including MSU, Bozeman. where I met him. Wish I could remember his name It was about 50 years ago.

Hi John. My wife and I never miss an episode. Been with you since almost the beginning. This is my first comment and question. Do you think the Vera Rubin observatory will be able to see or identify objects that could be technological in nature? Maybe uap's in space? Keep loving your job John! We love your work.
@JohnMichaelGodier
@JohnMichaelGodier 27 күн бұрын
Well, it would really depend on a few things. If the object accelerated and changed course, oh yeah, it'll see that. What else it might be able to determine is unclear, but what it can do is tell us such an object is coming. It'll catch them on their way in and give us the lead time to potentially catch it with a dedicated spacecraft.

Man I wish I was a little older when Haley’s came by. I was awed by it, but my memory from that young is very faded. I also got to thinking about something wacky, a comment grenade. Highly sublimate able materials, with a dense shell. Heat radiates in, and bam, 💥 firework. This probably couldn’t work with natural formation physics as I understand it, but it would be really cool. Maybe we should make one!
