🌪️ Mysterious Mist Tornadoes & Scuba Diving at NIGHT in FL for Fossils! 🐊🤿

What an UNREAL expedition on the river at night here in Florida! I absolutely love going out at night and seeing things that people rarely ever see. This adventure had all kinds of things that are almost never seen in the daylight.
Humans tend to have an aversion to the night/dark under the misconception that it is far more dangerous and scary. While there was a time when that was the case in our (pre)history, nowadays, things are relatively safe in the day or night. This started out as us accidentally getting out too late in the day and deciding we'd just do a night dive instead; that turned out to be a great decision for reasons we didn't yet know and it left us unable to leave the river even after the sun came up.
Also, please note: filming video at night, especially in this situation, is extremely difficult. The lower the light, the worse the video stabilization and image quality is. Many years ago, capturing any of this night time footage would have been impossible. The camera lenses we used here are extremely good in low light, but it is still pushing it to the limits. As such, you were notice some grainy, shaky footage in places, especially places where the main illumination of the shot is light bouncing from a flashlight off of fog/clouds. This is the only way to share this experience with you guys at the moment, but we may experiment with other techniques in the future that may lead to better quality (much larger lights).
If you guys enjoyed this video, make sure to hit that thumbs up button and let us know down in the comments below!

The knowledge that you and Brie have astounds me every I watch one of you video's. You dive in gator infested waters, pick up a piece of bone and know exactly what animal it cane from and when it lived. I just sit here with my mouth open and watch both of you pick up small pieces and tell us what they are. I must say I'm getting quite the education from your video's. Your content is out of this world. Thank you for educating me and others. I'm 72, and I will never stop learning.

As per Wikipedia…. Steam Devils. A steam devil is a small, weak whirlwind over water (or sometimes wet land) that has drawn fog into the vortex, thus rendering it visible. They form over large lakes and oceans during cold air outbreaks while the water is still relatively warm, and can be an important mechanism in vertically transporting moisture. I’m guessing they are formed on that particular river because the water from the spring is enough warmer than the air to set up the proper conditions.

Make sure the quality is set to 4K when watching this one! It'll help out a lot with those darker clips. Also, I mentioned in the video description, but we are pushing the limits of technology with the low light filming via flashlights here. As such, some clips are a bit grainy/shaky, but that is what happens when trying to film video in the pitch dark.

Those 'fog-nadoes' are called Steam Devils (the smaller version which you have here are known as Steam Whirls), there's an article on Wikipedia if you want to find out a bit more about em.

steam devils. The water is warmer than the air, so it will evaporate and condense. Warm air near the surface is less dense, so it will rise up. Little disturbances turn into whirlwinds because they are the most efficient at getting warm air up to the cold air the fastest, increasing entropy. Landspout tornadoes and waterspouts work by the same principle, but are larger.

"Fognado" I love it! What a cool night to have outdoors on the river and the fossil hunting was very productive too. That was the largest alligator osteoderm I've ever seen. Seeing that beaver was a real treat! The tail slap it did was a warning they do when they spot danger (might have been the boat or a gator).

One morning a friend and myself was on the Tennessee River. The air was dead still and there was fog hanging about 4 or 5 feet above the water. What was so amazing was the thousands of mine fog vortexes that were spinning about like the one you videoed. They were 2 to 8 inches in diameter. The fog was falling down through them spreading out and dissipating on the water. Of course, it was back when we had no cameras.

The gastropod shell you picked up is a Lymnaea (great pond snail) that lived from the Late Paleocene 55 million years ago. Also here is some info on the steam tornadoes you've been seeing. A steam devil, also known as a steam tornado, is a small, weak whirlwind that forms over water or wet land. Steam devils are caused by cold air over a relatively warm body of water or saturated surface. They can also be created when volcanic lava enters water.
