This is the story of the birth of modern chess - when the possibilities of chess as an art, a science and a sport all converged.
The point of convergence was a young boy from Louisiana named Paul Morphy. At a time when America was seen as a backwoods nation with little cultural history and even less intellectual impetus, at a time when chess was considered the exclusive property of a few European countries, at a time when the game was played successfully by a handful of men wizened by years, Paul Morphy, in the brief span of 19 months and with seemingly little effort, defeated conclusively every player he met.
While today few non chess players even know his name, he was one of the most famous celebrities of his time and within the hallowed halls of the chess playing community he is considered by some as the greatest chess player of all time.
But this diminutive, unassuming boy rose to fame almost out of nowhere and once he secured his place in history, he retired back into that hazy unknown, shunning the public eye, never again to play serious chess. Not only was he one of great practitioners of the game, but also one of it's greatest enigmas. He's been given the sobriquet, The Pride and Sorrow of Chess.

I was only able to find out that the player was called William Potier. 2 updates: The game was played at the Café de la Régence, which has been going since the 1700s From a book about the café called "Nouvelle Régence": "Young, impatient, audacious to the point of temerity, now enters the arena an amateur that we have seen, as a child, take part in the games of Grand Masters and a person whose name has already appeared in the records of the Régence. Mr. Potier. The occupations of this individual do not allow us to devote much time to him, but he has found in the solitude and silence the source of his progress. Full of love for science, he likes analysis and study; he therefore finds, by habit of his work, in difficult positions, excessively ingenious resources. Of a more cold, methodical, maybe too serious character, Mr. Potier belongs more to an English or German School of chess, looking for progress over distractions."

How Morphy can play with such strength and elegance and absolute sight over the board while blindfolded against several players who as a consequence have several times longer to think about their moves than Morphy, I'll never know. What an outstanding player!

FWIW in that gambit from the start (the Boden-Kieseritsky, I always knew it as), I always thought after black played ...d6 that N:e5! was the move. Black cannot capture because B:f7+ deflects the king from defence of the queen, and after ...Ke7 to defend it, then Bg5+ and the queen falls. And if ...Be6 to defend the diagonal, then B:e6 f:e6 / Qh5+ mops up. That line is good too though!
