I'm an eBay seller. Not shipping an item on time causes a defect on the seller's account. Resolving a buyers "item not as described" claim does not cause a defect. Better to ship wrong/broken item than cancel order or ship late (from seller's perspective).

When I was a very young man, dad used to take me fishing. Ah those were the days, just a boy and his dad on the bank of the river, the peace and quiet; you see back then you didn't speak unless you were spoken to, and dad loved his silence, so all we could hear were the sounds of nature, cattle in the distance, birds, the buzz of insects that live by the stream. At any rate, we used corks like that for floats on our fishing gear, which was a simple cane pole with a thick fishing line attached. We fished for the bullhead catfish which were a delight when properly prepared, and populated the streams and lakes of North Dakota, our home State. So it is, they sent you a nice piece of additional fishing equipment, however the size of the cork also indicates it could be quite useful after a huge plate of beans and bacon.

As a vet Telephone engineer (telecoms weren't invented until later when I was out of my time) I can confirm we all cut our teeth on lead based solder - I had a 5 rolls a week habit, it was cheaper than gum and chewier than toffee, and anyway we're only talking about a few brain cells ... When faulting strowager, the vibrations often caused wires to snap then it was standard to re-attach a short wire by holding the solder in your mouth then 81s grasping the wire with one hand and iron in the other to refix. Can't imagine how many rolls of solder we used in a single exchange. Some cables used wrapped joints but most were soldered. As for the cheesy puffs - its not just your fingers that turn orange if you eat them especially while surfing certain sites (hem hem !).

I truly admire you for repairing a Poundland LED lamp to keep on using it. You are so fun to watch. Can you discuss in a future video how the power companies can possibly charge us based on the capacitors in our electronics because of the smart meters. You've mentioned it in past videos and I don't totally understand how/what is going on. Thanks for the many years of entertainment:)
@johnfrancisdoe1563
@johnfrancisdoe1563 4 жыл бұрын
Nick F In basic AC electrical theory, if the voltage and currents are all sine waves at mains frequency, the currents will all add up to a single sine wave. Using trigonometry, the current wave can be converted to the sum of one wave that is in perfect sync and one that is 90° (1/4 of a full 50/60 Hz period) delayed. Only the in-phase current delivers actual power to your house, but the out-of-phase current still causes power to be lost in the miles of wiring from the power plant to your house. Traditional electricity meters only measure the power delivered via in-phase current, while out-of-phase current is traditionally regulated by having the terms of delivery (indirectly) demanding that you keep the out-of-phase below a few percent of the total. With the new meters they finally have gotten the ability to know who actually exceed the limit and take action against such customers, either one by one or by setting a fee for the out-of-phase load. An important twist is that when the rules were written, the big problem was inductors causing currents that is up to 90° late, with the usual corrective action being to plug in capacitor loads to cancel it out. But modern electronics often do significant capacitive or off-frequency loads.

It is 100% a scam. They tell you it will be 5 days so that they can delay you form investigating it for a bit longer, they also tell you to contact them first (the seller) so that you will not open a claim with ebay immediately. Then when the fifth day rolls around and you still have no item, you've either forgotten about the item you ordered, or you contact the seller, instead of ebay. Once you contact the seller they will give you the ring around and make you jump through hoops, until the time frame allowed to open a claim has come and gone, so that ebay will no longer help you with getting your money back. It is also more than likely a very high volume seller, that works in a scam ring, so they all leave each other wonderful reviews that drown out the negative reviews.

@@Berkeloid0 The scam is the tracking info, along with possibly an admission of having received whatever the seller shipped. It can make it much more difficult to get a refund. I had that happen to me. I reported it to Paypal and Ebay. Neither made it easy even though the seller was getting a lot of bad reviews from other victims, and then the account was terminated. After jumping through a bunch of hoops and a few weeks, I finally got my money back. Because they usually take over an old account and the package was tracked, Paypal only holds funds for 3 days after delivery, so in my case the scammer got their money long before I got my money back.

Cool you making a vid about the underwater light, just bought one for fishing myself recently. Use it for catching squid, the green LEDs apparently are specifically attractive to them. Unfortunately buoyant so had to weigh it down to have it sink a few feet. The wires is really angel hair thick though, and the advertised 15W on mine were a blatant lie. A cool effect is to stare at the green light for a min, really saturates your green cone retina cells, so your field of vision is super pink tinted for a few minutes, and white lights appear pink. Very cool biological effect.

I'm an electronics engineer and also an "eco-hippie" and to me banning lead solder is just a bandaid. The real problem is that nobody is considering how to dispose of or re-use electronics at the time they're designing them, and so they just end up in landfills without any of their rare elements being recovered or harmful substances being removed.
@longrunner258
@longrunner258 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I have pretty much the same feeling. (To be fair, easing recyclability *was* cited as an argument in favor of removing lead, particularly in Japan where they were running out of landfill space; if anything, this may be stronger than most of the other arguments for lead-free. Recycling is still very far from a panacea, though, given the gross inefficiency of electronics manufacturing in the first place, especially of semiconductors.) I'm just not sure of a really good way to reduce e-waste in the first place, given technological obsolescence - beyond reducing demand for the services it provides, and discouraging unnecessary upgrades (how to co-ordinate those at large scale?). I'm of the type that keeps my old devices as long as they're still usable, so that should help a bit. For items which rarely (if ever) become obsolete, of course, the best thing is to make them last as long as practical. Frankly, I even consider video sharing a privilege, given the amounts of storage and bandwidth used (vastly greater than for text-based media); so to be worthwhile to me, a video has to offer something a text-based page (even with pictures) couldn't… Back on topic, if we were *that* worried about lead, then surely phasing out lead-acid batteries as swiftly as possible would have been the best thing to do (after having taken care of petrol and paint)? (Indeed, some campaigns to move away from lead batteries did exist around the same time RoHS was introduced; but where are the results?) Are we hypocrites or what? (I'm not saying it's effortless to change to other battery technology; but I don't quite see the logic in banning leaded solder from electronics while giving lead batteries a legal pass. Unless Big Battery was too mighty for legislators to confront, that is, but it still makes the solder restriction seem like a token gesture; I know the batteries are meant to be recycled, but since they're the dominant remaining use of lead, only a small fraction have to be wrongly disposed of to make up a large portion of lead waste.) In fairness, a considerable part of the trauma of the transition was due to misapprehensions in the electronics industry (which for the most part lacked much metallurgical insight, as it was the first time they had to deal with substantially different solders) about how to work with the new alloys: www.solderrecovery.com/pdf/Lead%20Free%20Article%202.pdf It even suggests that the understanding gained from the experience may eventually outweigh whatever underlying metallurgical shortcomings remain. But in a nutshell, I can see valid and reasonable arguments each way; I don't doubt that significant improvements in lead-free solder have been made (although the poor versions are still in use by low-end manufacturers), but I'm still not sure RoHS took a very good approach (if they were a bit gentler, say by requiring mandatory declaration and/or a tax on lead content, then they might not have generated the same resentment). As for the 'no safe level of lead' party line (not that I deny the claim outright), to be fair, I'm not so sure if there are completely "safe" levels of other poisonous substances (that aren't necessary nutrients at some level - although there are suggestions that *extremely* low levels of lead may be vital to at least some organisms) either (of course, they are qualitatively different in how they harm). As for what DIY and repair people use, I've adopted the "live and let live" approach. (So far I've been using Sn60Pb40 in my stuff, of which I have more than I'll need for a while; I'll decide what to use after that when I come to it.)

This repair seems quite doable. In the old days, I remember, someone repaired an incandescent bulb by slightly tapping the wire out of the eye and shake a bit to persuade the ends to touch. A little spark fused the filament and a dimmer kept the current down. It was on a TV-show featuring odd people. A tip to prevent orange fingers. Use chopsticks. It also, as a bonus, prolongs the satisfying experience by slowing a bit the munching down rate.

@EsotericArctos 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnfrancisdoe1563 I did that out of curiosity about a month ago. Came back all within normal levels. Lead from solder doesn't really penetrate the skin a lot and the vapours that come from solder are mostly flux chemicals and very little metal vapour. It's not like using lead water pipes or the soluble lead used in paints. I would not strip lead based paint without protection as an example :)

Left an apparently dead LED in a lamp (it has multiple bulbs so I just couldn't be bothered) and it eventually just started working again on its own. Only apparent difference is it dims over about a second once power is cut now instead of going out immediately.

16 mins in, solder killing you lol. I used to have lengths in my teeth while soldering at Fergusons (Videocrypt decoders) cack in '91 and my boss would see me and she would slap me round the head and shout. I am still here to tell the tale. I was working a nightshift in 2005 ish when we went lead free. took me hours to get the robotic assembly stations to work with the stuff (wire and paste) but that's another loooong story. The tips lasted 6 hours rather than 4 days until we went induction based.

@@drgusman The last I used was BasicPCB. They have a very cheap tier. The PCB was thinner than standard but for my purposes, that's fine. I don't think they run out of stock but what's happening is that they're doing drop-ship from China, which takes a really long time. They sent you the cork, as you called out, to fulfill their requirements to ebay and show that they can ship in a "reasonable time". I've had a similar experience and see that they're just routing orders from eBay to AliExpress/Alibaba and send out these "placeholder" shipments.

That's crazy. Same thing happened to me last week. A seller sent me shimmering red tassel when it should have been an isolated converter. Then they sent me a new tracking number. Makes me think that the sellers don't actually have the items in stock and order it after the sale has closed. Weird.

One more thing, I guess they figure they send ya a cork so you can use it as a bobber when ya do go fishing, that is just rotten man. Down right rotten. Has this happened to you before. The cork thing. I just ordered a carburetor for lawn mower, when I received it the gas just flowed out the air cleaner so I took it apart and apparantly I needed to finish the assembly (some assembly required 😂) so I put the needle valve and float in place. Works like a charm.

A while back I ordered an Android phone accessory through ebay, from China. Instead of the accessory, I received a shrink wrap bag labeled "waterproof phone case", and a card in Engrish explaining that the shrink wrap bag was sent as an "apology" for late delivery, and that my ordered item would arrive shortly. Three days later my actual thing arrived. I thought it was a scam but it wasn't. It was just random insanity.

Well, wouldn't you know that just 12 hours before this notice, I had one of the round bulbs go to flickering and quit... Popped the top and No black dots! ??? However the non-lead solder gave way and the wire was hanging in the breeze! Put some real stuff (Led-solder) on the wires and pads soldered them back down, it has been working fine for 4 hours, WIN! "Nows there Your Dinner!" Thanks BC.... Ya know, I had the eBay package thing happen last year with a similar note, at least you got a corck... Lol Did not hear back so I waited 3 weeks sent a message and then filed a refund claim . Wow wasn't 15 min's of filling they wanted me to cancel the claim and would send me 2 of the relays that I ordered... I said no thanks ordered some else where's, project done, refund please! 2nd time in 15yrs of eBay not bad... :D LLAP

Well, at least that lead isn't going to landfill (just yet), and I wonder which is worse, lead solder and a lamp repaired, or a new lamp, and old one contaminating the land - Hmm? Now then, those of us who do ridiculous things, like restoring vintage TVs and suchlike, would have employed the 5A fuse wire trick, soldering the fine wire to those short leads and sliding the PCB (or in our case most often CRT and valve (tube) bases) down the wires until the original leads protrude through their holes, then solder them in. And finally, did I hear Kenny Everett/Captain Kremen in the room there with you?
