9:50 The reason they might want to lift themselves from the saddle is that there most likely is a risk where after a very heavy impact (i.e. being hit when exchanging lances), if you are firmly against the back rest it might break your back. If you lift your bottom from the saddle you might get dismounted on this heavy impact, but that is probably better than breaking your spine.

@@ladycreedrain726 I'm not saying it's a foolproof method - it's just chosing arguably lower risk over the higher one, but at the end of the day it's still a gamble. Plus we know they did this and what I state here is merely an idea why

This was actually so interesting. Seeing you actually teaching another person about the history of horse warfare is so easy to follow along! I'd have never have known about holding the lance under the other arm. Or I did know and forgot but seeing you teach someone else about it with a practical demonstration helped me learn too! Can't wait for more of this! Lindy having legs that are too long for the stirrups was also something I didn't expect. I'm sure there were very tall people back then so did they make special stirrups for taller people? I'm guessing everything about a knight and their equipment was specifically designed for that knight but just changing the the length might have been quite the task for people back then who were used to doing things a certain way. I dunno but regardless, super interesting and cannot wait for more!

Depends how much money you had, I imagine! Non-standard solutions take more time and hence cost more. As a rich noble, you'll likely just pay for it and get it done. As a levy, I imagine you'd just get munitions grade equipment and if it doesn't work for you that's tough cookies, because it's all you'll get.

Maybe the shield was strapped to the upper arm for calvary charges. That would give more range for the lower arm to wield the reins. I'd think they'd rise from the saddle during the charge to give them room for shock adsorption at impact. Those 4 or 5 inches to fall to the saddle could spare the tailbone by transferring the energy to the leg mucles.

I find it interesting that “tactics” of heavy cavalry are often overlooked. Reminds me of WW2 fighter aircraft - where Americans developed tactics based on the advantages of their aircraft (speed, dive, firepower) compared to Japanese aircraft. For an armored knight, “keep moving forward” - use the momentum of the horse! Don’t get caught in a “turning” fight with adversaries on your flanks. Push through, break off, and re-engage. A principal we never see in the movies.

We kind of saw it in The King, on a way that doesn't make any sense though During the battle scene of Agincourt, some knights break through the line of men at arms and make it to the English rear guard (when they shouldn't, in real life) And then we don't see them ever again, everyone is dismounted on the next scene

Ahhh the memories of growing up a young equestrian and the moments I've forgotten from sheer force of impact. We used to say ur not a cowboy unless you've been bucked out of your boots. And in western saddles with "cowboy" boots that can happen and has happened to me twice. I attempted (you could say) a third but the boot decided not to let go of me and I was simply dragged about 100yrds before my horse blackjack (who really was a very good gentle soul) even noticed and just stopped and stood there looking at me like as if to ask "are you finished with that nonsense can we get on with the running now?"

I remember talking to Lloyd about collaborating with Jason, but he wasn't keen on riding horses. Jason is a master, and with his encouragement and tutelage, 'Lindy' should soon be a competent rider. Better yet, when he's finally strapped into his armour and saddle. We just need heraldic devices and a couple of knighthoods.

I cranked up my imagination and began to wonder what the film would have been like if Matt Easton had been in Lloyd's place. And what came out to me was that: 1. The video would be much more serious. 2. Matt would have been great at wielding all kinds of weapons even if you put him on the ceiling. 3. You could learn a lot more from each other as a result. 4. I don't know if Captain Context would be persuaded to get on a horse :) 5. The film would certainly have more substance - but it would also be a less funny. I won't say that I don't miss such a film. But for now I am indeed having a great time and look forward to the sequel.

So, I am not a practicing Jena person, but one reason you may want your hips above the back of the saddle in a couch is to avoid your back breaking on the back of the saddle. This way, if you take a blow, your whole body falls backwards off the horse at once, but if the saddle is in the way, the top half moves back quicker and… well… breakage

Stabbing from atop a horse is a great way to have the sword wrenched out of your hand. There are very practical reasons why cavalry shifted to sabers - the inertia of a horse & rider is advantageous to slashing attacks and detrimental to stabbing attacks. The lance was typically good for the initial charge and then lost or broken and the sword used for the remainder of the battle.
@ModernKnight
@ModernKnight Жыл бұрын
I don't find it an issue. the change to sabres etc. more to do with the change from armour to uniforms. Sabres and slashing weapons are useless against any type of armour, so stabbing was necessary, especially to weak points. Yes lances break, but you get out of battle, reform and rearm. heavy knights were always accompanied by lighter armed wing-men, whose main job, in my opinion, was to get the principle out of trouble and back to rearm and reform. Inertia is essential for stabs, not so slashes, so you have that the wrong way around.
