► Hello and welcome back everyone. In this series, we are looking at interesting, rare and fascinating photos from history.
IN FOCUS TODAY:
► This is believed to be the first ever picture taken with humans in it. You may wonder, where are they? This image in fact shows a busy street in Paris, taken by Louis Daguerre in 1838, the guy who invented the Daguerreotype process. But, due to exposure time of more than ten minutes, the traffic disappeared, apart from one man getting his boots polished, who stood still long enough, to appear on the photo and be forever immortalized in history records, even though his identity remains unknown.
► When I saw this photo for the first time, I thought this is some sort of anti-tank shotgun. In fact, this monster gun, is used to shoot ducks and it dates back to 19th century, even though this photo is taken around 1920s. It is called Punt Gun and can kill between 50 and 100 birds in one shot. As the population of waterfowl fell to a dramatic level, at some point US government had to step in and ban this practice.
► This rare photo from 1877, has just emerged in the last couple of years and it shows Billy The Kid, playing cards, presumably poker, with three other men from his gang. The Kid is wearing his distinctive top hat and waistcoat, looking more like a teenager than an outlaw. He was just 21 years old when sheriff Pat Garrett finally caught up to him in New Mexico, in July 1881.
Please check the video for more fascinating photos from history.

The punt gun is a very rare antique today. They were largely scraped out in the WW2 metal drives. A friend of mine in the San Francisco Bay Area owned one. Considering that it was a muzzle loader, it took quite an effort to load. It was readied for firing and then put at the prow of a punt. The punt was then floated up to a flock of ducks on the water. When close enough, a regular shotgun was fired over the flock. As the startled flock rose off the water the punt gun, really just a king size shot gun, would be fired. A single discharge would down 40 or 50 ducks which were then gathered up and sold to the restaurants in San Francisco.

Yes people were pretty then as they were breastfed as babies. Breastfeeding encourages broad development of the face, smaller noses, straighter teeth etc. Add to that the fact they ate organically and you have a win win situation for beauty. People look far uglier today as they live in cities eating processed foods which they sadly cannot avoid!!

The "Lunch On the Girder of a Skyscraper" photo is actually a clever optical illusion which was posed by the photographer; the workers were in no danger at all, as the girder was actually an inner structure, positioned well within the outer dimensions of the building under construction. There was a complete wooden floor beneath the workers the whole time! 😄

Your caption that all 700 of Custer's men were killed is inaccurate. Out of the 700 men in the 7th Cavalry, 168 or so were not at the battle being assigned to duty elsewhere. Of the approximately 550 men who were with Custer, 268 died on the field with 6 dying later from their wounds. Most of the men under Captains Benteen and Reno escaped. Custer had split his command so that he had around 210 men with him (5 companies) while Benteen and Reno were each in command of 3 companies each with one other company being assigned to guard the pack train. Those 7 companies wound up on a wooded rise and were able to successfully defend themselves. They withdrew from their position the following day. It is true that all of the men with Custer in the battle died. It is not true that his entire command was with him.

Hey Mystery Scoop, there's a photograph of St. Therese of Lisieux (Therese Martin) as a 15 year old with her hair made up into a bun. I'd love to see that one. Her face is very well known, and often badly represented in religious art, so it would be very neat seeing her living image. Cheers and thanks for your great work.

Woulda been cool to have closer photos of the Japanese Samurais in Egypt. I could just imagine their awesome wardrobe/weapons/hats. Would make a cool movie too: Samurais innocently touring Egypt, then The Mummy attacks with a legion of mummies, monsters, sandstorm, beetles, etc... Sergeant Stubby makes an appearance. Yay!
