I wish dokkan would call piccolo "Ultimate Piccolo" instead of "Piccolo (Power Awakening)" edit: I only mentioned dokkan instead of just saying "I wish the games called him..." was because I never knew it was called that in the other games too

The cardgame calls Gurus powerup "Dormant Potential Unleashed" and Elder Kai's powerup "Latent Potential Unleashed". I really like that distinction.

I never realized ultimate was a fan name

I liked Mystic. Especially in the Shin Budokai games where he gets dark blue shading which is so badass.

I don’t care what anyone says, this was one of the my favorite forms from any character. I just love a character powering up and not needing to have a hair color change to show it. Gohan surpassing all the super saiyan forms while remaining in his base form was always cool to me and felt majestic

I think I disliked that Gohan dressed like Goku during the Buu arc more. I guess I wanted him to stand out more like the saiyan man suit or the purple gi earlier in the arc.

Music teacher here. On the topic of potential unleashed. There are at least 2 levels of potential. The first is long term potential, what we can ultimately achieve through practice over a lifetime, playing at the limit of what our bodies are physiologically capable of. The other is short term potential. Changes that can be made in the present to increase output. One example I commonly see is a student practicing something, but their minds are too preoccupied with worrying about making mistakes so they overthink and spend to much energy checking their hands. Guiding them in trusting themselves (often I'll ask them to play with eyes closed) and soon thereafter they can perform much better than they had a moment ago. This is what I feel happens in Dragonball, short term potential is unlocked. To make a comparison similar to power levels. Pull ups don't come easy to people. Even if someone has the strength they may not be able to do one. But if you guide them through the proper technique and cues, they all of a sudden can, they didn't get stronger, but learned how to more efficiently use their strength. I think it's called torque bleed.

I dunno, I always liked "Mystic Gohan". For how built up his hidden power was I thought the term was fitting. It's so much better than "Ultimate Gohan".....that just sounds so generic to me. Ehhh not a big deal though, now we have "Beast Gohan" which is not a good name and I think the hair is a bit too silly but....ehh whatever its fine lol

To be fair "potential unleashed", and "awakened" have been used in a lot if official media beforehand. Whereas "ultimate" seems to be relatively new. If someone can point me to its first use I would be very interested to know.

None of my friends I know called him Mystic Gohan. We always called him Ultimate Gohan.

What about "Unleashed Gohan"? I think it would pair well with Gohan's Beast form. Old Kai "unleashes" Gohan from his metaphorical chains that hold him back from reaching his true potential and forging his own path to power separate from his Saiyan lineage, then in Super Hero, Gohan awakens the "beast" inside of him and tames it, reinventing himself and not simply following in his father's footsteps.

In the French version of Budokai Tenkaichi, he's called "Gohan ultime", which translates to "Ultimate Gohan". I am thus flabbergasted to realize that it was a fan name all along...

I always categorized them as potential unleashed and potential unlocked. They sound similar, im sure but I thought of unlocked as they can keep growing further and unleashed as everything being utilized all at once.

"Ultimate" is the quasi-official name for the English translation, however the Japanese name for the form is "Chou-Gohan", which directly translates to "Super Gohan"

Maybe i'm tripping but Years ago when i searched Mystic Gohan, i would only see Ssj Teen Gohan with the Piccolo cape. Obviosly that's wrong but that's what came up.

It works for Z because it was his “end game” in terms of forms, but it kind of feels unfitting now that he has a form that’s more powerful.

Ultimate Gohan has been across the franchise for like...2 decades.

Ultimate and Potential Unleashed has always been acknowledged in video games. Thus making them closer to canon until Super officially made Ultimate the form's name. Mystic, however, was NEVER acknowledged.

The Tenkaichi series always called this form Ultimate Gohan.

The encyclopedia in Kakarot states that it’s just a base level increase and him not needing SSJ against Majin Buu just meant his base was stronger than Buu.

There’s technically 3 times Gohan has his hidden potential unlocked if you count super saiyan 2. I do since it’s the endgame for Gohan’s rage boosts and hidden potential.

I’ve always thought that the Buu Saga/Ultimate Gohan hairstyle was his best look. His hair didn’t look as cool in Dragon Ball Super because he lacked the single hair going over forehead.

It's still odd to me that this is a form at all. I always thought it was just his new base form. That all of his power was now readily available to him without transforming. It being a form in the old Budokai games, I assumed was to give him a ssj3 equivalent form to match Goku.

I wonder if the two potential unlocks by the Grand Elder and Elder Kai will be integral to how Gohan unlocked and quickly get the hang of his Beast mode. They probably won’t go that route but here’s hoping.

The only "official" name his state has ever gotten is Saikyou no Senshi, which is japanese for "the strongest warrior".

Ultimate gohan always was official, even before dbs. Old dbz action figures always called him that (all the way to today's shfigurarts), and same with video games too.

Considering this form was unlocked via magic by a kai, Mystic Gohan fits way better than "ultimate" because it isn't even his strongest form, which means it isn't ultimate.

I thought of kid Potential Unleashed Gohan as Potential UNLOCKED and Ultimate Gohan as Potential Unleashed.

Games called him Ultimate Gohan for marketing reasons. That way nobody assumed he was a magic dude. Smart choice.

The problem with calling it Ultimate Gohan is, when the next form comes out, that form won't be Ultimate anymore. So Mystic was better in that sense. Now I heard of Beast Gohan, so that previous form is no longer the end all be all of his power.

I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next for Gohan. Beast is cool as heck. I'm hoping it goes into green hair berserk.

I always thought Mystic was a pretty cool name, but I never really understood why people called it that. Ultimate makes more sense and is just as good in my eyes, so it's good they addressed it.
