Mountain peaks, clouds, mist and starry sky of the International Dark Sky Reserve in motion.
I am very happy we made Lake Tekapo on South Island of New Zealand our winter holiday destination. Of course it had to be around the New Moon and I hoped for some clear nights. The weather was good and I had two cameras clicking away during six nights.
One lucky night the fog descended on the valley but Mt. John remained above it. The lights of Lake Tekapo village and passing cars under the blanket of fog made for a very cool foreground. I think I like it even better than Aurora. Warm thanks to the University of Canterbury for letting me use the Mt. John Observatory grounds.
Matariki (the Māori name for the Pleiades) eluded me due to clouds, full memory card or flat battery until the very last morning at the Church of Good Shepherd. Even then it looked like the fog thickened just before Matariki rose but it cleared up just in time when Jupiter and Venus joined the show.
I hope you enjoy watching this five-minute long film as much as I enjoyed making it.

I grew up in the suburbs farily close to a large city. The light pollution was pretty bad, and I could only see a handful of stars. Anybody else feel like when you look at all those stars, you're looking something you shouldn't be allowed to look at? Like you're not worthy of it? Like looking in the face of God.

God is one of the reasons? What? How is the myopia of reductive materialism and the consequences of industrialized civilization (such as ridiculous amounts of light pollution) in anyway the fault of God, and not of your own species, humankind? If you wish to place blame, at least do it properly -- place it where it is deserved.

Alex, depending the weather, I'll give it a try in December-January. right now I'm timelapsing the northern hemisphere in a very light polluted continent. Where I live the Netherlands, stars are close to invisible. Especially the milky-way. I hope the weather will be comparable to 2007, when I met Fraser Gunn. Those days I just bought a Nikon D200, mostly still shooting with a Nikon FM2. Nowadays mostly a D800 or D700 they are suberb for astroshots. Zero project provides great time lapse music

Full frame DSLR (D3S), f/2 or f/2.8 30 sec, ISO 3200. I do adjust the levels in post production to make it a little brighter. F/4 is a bit too dim also the position of the of the Milky Way centre (most luminous part) makes a bit of a difference.

Hey man, just a quick question as I took a few pictures of the milky way in new zealand as well and recently got into time lapsing. How do you do the time lapses of the night sky. Which settings to you reckon are best and what's the time interval between the photos you are using? Cheers
