i got lucky. my grandpa had a 64kg (141lb) Brooks anvil sitting around so he gave it to me. its wicked awesome to use and its the only piece of forging equipment i have that is irreplaceable. pretty good condition aside from a few minor dings on the horn and just a bit weathered. i used to have a little 56lb (25.4kg) peter wright to forge knives on, but with this Brooks i can whack out 5160 blades of all sizes very fast. in my experience (im sure most peoples) the right anvil setup makes a difference when it comes to speed and quality of the project and is definitely easier on your body.

Those anvils look like a good option, truth is your skills forged that knife. I bet you could forge another knife just as good on a harbor freight. Great job Matt

I enjoyed the video, I like how you forged something on the anvil vs just talking about it. If I wasn't so far away in Tennessee I would definitely take a class with you.

I picked up an anvil like this a couple of months ago, I cleaned (wire brushed the black paint off)it up, welded and leveled the pritchell hole with the face, and made a steel base for it, it serves me well, I have no problems with casting or hardness (55)at all. I don’t care about issues with packaging and grease on the face-it was delivered quick and in a hurry to my door. I did a lot of research on anvil shape and price per pound, sure I would love to have bought a rigid anvil, but I could not justify the cost. And this anvil has turned out to be a keeper.

I'd love to see what you did to level the pritchell. I was debating having a new pritchell drilled in the heel (carbide/cobalt bits are pricey) and plugging and welding the old pritchell shut.

Lucky. When mine was delivered, it was shipped like a potato. It literally had the shipping label taped to the face. No box, no packing materials at all. I just wish my buddy had a ring camera so i could post that the UPS guy must have been saying carrying that sucker to the door ..

LOL, That would have been something else. I had the same experiance when I had my cavalry anvil delivered, it was just the anvil and a few pieces of cardboard, the UPS guy complained the whole time about how heavy it was (112lbs) I was thinking dude have you never done a day of manual labor in your life. I appreciate you watching.

You do have the coolest anvil I've seen in a long time... I've always liked the looks and sound of it but I can't afford it so the vevor might be the right way to go for me.

@@Mysticmountainforge as a stock removal guy, being able to move metal would be a huge step up. Even if I need to upgrade 2 years down the road, how could I pass this up?

I bought the 50kg, still have yet to use it, but the price for a beginner couldn't be beat. I don't know about other folks, but I think vevor might be giving harbor freight a run for their money in the inexpensive tool market that is.

How would the anvil survive forging a pair of tongs out of 20mm steel

Probably ok,I know Old Hickory forge beat on his with a sledge, I would say if you have an extra 7-800 dollars then go with a quality made anvil but if your just getting started and want to get to work then I would go with this one, the face skates a file, this isn't a soft cast iron face like a harbor freight anvil. The steel I used was 1/4 inch bar, and I have done multiple rr spike projects both knives and forks without any issues. I do plan on using this anvil solely for future work both bladesmithing and blacksmithing to test out its durablility, and I promise that if I have any problems it will documented here on the channel, If you can afford it it's always best to go with the best but if your working on a budget, this one is pretty close to the top of your options for a new anvil.
