I think that first batch caused mild reactions to Rebecca but a severe reaction to Jennifer so they had switch up the formula for Jennifer

For Jennifer they made a body suit because she had skin reactions from the make up applied. She only had her face made up. Whereas Rebecca had make up on her whole body. And yes, you are right, Rebecca was a better mystique and looked better.

Yep. She was able to straight up alter her DNA. And in other versions she could give herself weapons and completely shapeshift beyond just physical appearances

Only other humans and their clothes/accessories. It MIGHT be psychological and based on vision. Like Nightcrawler can only teleport to places he has seen, Mystique can only turn into a person she has seen. I gave Nightcrawler example because in some versions they’re mother and son, so their powers might be working on similar rules, but not confirmed in the movies.
