Level 1 for me then, can't do backstroke, the others can do for a couple miles without being tired evn a little. And every time i stay over a year without swimming, i go back to level 0 🤣 Learning how to swim helped me not drown when we had an incident at large on a sailing ship. and i had to stay in the water without knowing when help would come. Need to reach level 3!

There should be a tier between 5 and 6 for swimmers that are mid-major D1 and upper tier D2/3. A sub minute 100m free isn’t impressive for competitive swimmers but a sub 50 100m is Olympic trials, which is difficult for even top level collegiate swimmers.

I placed 6th at state in my 100 breast, my time was a low 1:04.. my medley relay also placed 6th.. I also placed 9th in the 50 free at state with a 23.80.. I can swim under 55 seconds on my 100 free and I swim a 5:36 on my 500 free.. I feel very complete and proud of all the work I put in, I don’t think I will swim in college competitions but I want to swim in some club teams or even play water polo……. I live in idaho and we have a very small amount of pool time because we share one pool with many different teams.. I get a max of 5 practices per week with about 1 hour and 45 minutes of pool time a day…. But then I share a lane with 10 other people short course…. I am very proud of how far I came given the circumstances of life ❤

@peglor
@peglor 10 ай бұрын
Requiring people to be able to do the butterfly before they can get out of level 2 is pretty insane given how useless it is as a stroke for anyone not interested in racing butterfly, which even most competitive swimmers don't do. Front crawl is fast and pretty efficient, breast stroke is very efficient when not done for speed but not fast, side stroke is the safest option for open water and used by militaries everywhere but not even mentioned because it's not a competition stroke, so all these strokes have an obvious place in a practical swimming arsenal. Butterfly does not. Also this ignores the a massive difference in capability between sprinters and endurance athletes - I can cruise for kilometers at sub 10 minute 500 m pace (And that's in a 50 m pool, with all the extra pushes off the wall on shorter pools I can knock a few seconds more per 100 off and use less energy overall), and it's boredom that usually ends the swim rather than fatigue. I can even do this pace for as a warm down after 2 hours or more of other high intensity exercise because that pace is all day zone 2 work as far as my heartrate is concerned. At my very best when I was swimming nearly daily for a couple of months, I've only ever gone under 1:30 for 100 m a handful of times, so for someone with my physiology, putting those two things into the same category makes no sense.

Breaking 1:00 on 100m (not yards) freestyle is extremely hard and you are pretty much an elite level anywhere in the worlds. Low 50s means you are most likely a D1 swimmer or former and anyone there has a good shot at the Olympic trial pretty much. Level 6 and 7 are pretty much unattainable, unless you are a professional or d1 swimmer. No time for 12 sessions workout per week, they’ve got a real job and family to take care of.

Low 50s does not mean D1 or former. Olympic trials are far away still. Low 50s for long course meters maybe, but certainly not short course yards.

@@slovetrocorrect. Top mens swimmers in high school are breaking mid to high 40’s in 100 yard free, so that’s the bare minimum for mens D1 NCAA college swimmers. I joined my highschool swim team as a freshman for the 23-24 season and according to this I’ve gone from survival to being in the top 5% of swimmers with in the span of a little over three months with eight practices a week for most of that my first 50 free time was basically 50 seconds and now I’m going for sub 30 and I wasn’t even really an active person before this really shows with enough hard work and discipline your effort will pull through and I can’t wait for my next season

It's not very difficult to swim fly, but you might need a coach to learn it. Try do the fly kicking only, and try do the arms only (for a few meters, 25 meters fly arm is hard). Then with the help of someone put them together, 2 kick for 1 arm rotation. 😊 If you can do 5 meters of it then you can do it 😊 The difficult part is to do 100 meters and more of fly without stopping 😅

There's many many variation and combination between those rankings. I'm open water swimmer, but i have long periods with less training than i would need/want, as ot is now, in the winter. I cannot swim very often and long distances in 3°c -7°c lakes, because i'm 51yo. My spint top speed was 10.2kmh (25m) but my regular speed for relaxing (18-23°c) is 3-4kmh in front crawl (freestyle). I cannot sustain a speed of 7-8kmh for 500m as you said is needed for level 5, but i was swimming in lakes for 5hours (without any support as water etc.. alone 100%) and i swim easyly in heavy seastorm - i do that from 15years ago, black sea and mediteranean sea (but that not in winter time)

Swam alot during school, then I never tried again until a month ago (almost 10 years since I swam last time). Intresting how the reflexes how to do the breaststorke where still there. My problem is being afraid of deep water due to an accident where I was about to drown and not knowing how to tread water. Going to try learn it "again" after the new year by an instructor.

There is an official ranking system for almost any kind of sport in a countries of post Soviet Union. For swimming, basically it is the table, where you can find distance, time and your "rank". This table is always updating according to the results of current World Championships and Olympic Games. There are 9 ranks. For example, in Russian swimming ranking system, the lowest rank "third youth rank" for 800m freestyle men in 25m pool is 18:30. The highest rank is "international master of sports" for the same distance and pool the time is 7:46. Same for 100m freestyle in 50m pool it is 2:05 to 0:48:35 from lowest to highest rank. So, this ranking system covers pretty wide range of swimmers. (P.S. The times I wrote may be a bit wrong, since I took them not from official sources). If you once swim any distance during big competitions (I think they usually accord to standards of FINA), you may be recognised to a certain rank. For example, I can swim 800m freestyle in 50m pool within around 10:40, and can be claimed as "second rank". To become second rank, you need to swim this distance at 11:18. To become 1st rank 9:41. In general, the second rank is 5th of 9 ranks from best to worst. As addition, actually there is one more hidden rank, which you won't find in that table: "Honored Master of Sports". You can be recognised as that, if you bring a medal to your country from Big International Championships and your merit is really valuable. Also, probably it may work for a world record, however I dont know exactly. Sometimes it happens, guys jump from "master of sport" to "honored master of sport", skipping "international master of sport" if they bring the medal (relay race is counted as well).
@Arguna
@Arguna 9 ай бұрын
The beauty of this this system is that you can actually compare completely different swimmers. For example, sprinter vs stayer. Breastroke girls with Backstroke guy, etc. For example, if the girl can swim 100m breaststroke in 50m pool in 1:10, but the guy can swim same style/distance/pool in 1:06, the girl actually is higher rank, because she is "master of sport" (1:13:9 required) and the guy is "candidate master of sport" (1:08:9 required for this rank and 1:04:9 to become "master of sport"). Moreover, you can even compare athletes from different sports!

I can swim a 51 100 free SCY. I’m guessing that’s about 58-1:00 LCY. Anyway, I got moved down from Senior group to “Development group” today at practice.

In terms of official races, there is a 500 yard freestyle, but the equivalent race in meters is a 400 meter freestyle :)

I never tried butterfly, but I can keep 1:50/100 freestyle pace for 25m according to my watch... but I can't hold it, my average while swimming normally is more like 2:20 - 2:40 depending on how tired am I and how is my day

How did it develop the last months? I swim every day for the last two weeks. Swimming 1200m today my average pace for 100m is 2.55 with the fastest 100m at 2.46. Yesterday it was average 2.57 with the fastest 100m in 2.37
6 ай бұрын
@@MathieuDeVinois on my longest continuous swim I had 5km in around 105 min, so that should be around 2:10 min/100m But I was dead for next 2 days Now I'm working more on my technique, I can go much must faster for smaller distances (like 100m) but I'm not much faster for longer, like 1km+, but I think that will come with more time spent practicing properly

As someone who currently swims USMS, I'd argue no active USMS swimmers are level 6. At the 2023 Summer Nats, there were 0 men sub 50 in the 100m free. And honestly, that makes sense, sub 50 in the 100m free is blisteringly fast, and getting up to that speed after your college years are over is just so hard. There's going to be very very few USMS swimmers with trials cuts. In short, the skill gap between level 5 and 7 is almost larger than the gap between 1 and 5- and the gap between 1 and 5 is enormous.

yeah, no offense to Fares but he seems to have set it up that way for himself. Being :59 in 100 yard breaststroke doesn't make you super elite - that's a common time for high schoolers, even if it is impressive. Elite/international for breaststroke is more like :54 and lower... Maybe lower than that now :52 ?? (Yards)

Hey I am under the fourteen age group and am level six but can’t hold my breathe to save my life😅 I am on a team where we do 2 1/2 hours every day and will start morning practice for 2 additional hours to. I am a female and have a 54.30 in my 100 free and I can’t even make jr state so I am not sure it will be Olympic trial but I work very hard every day my 500 free is a 5:20 sooo I am a sprinter I have been doing swim for 7 years but joined a good team about 3 years ago. My best stroke is breaststroke and I have hurt shoulder I have a torn muscle and 2 impinged muscles in the other shoulder but I will not be taking any breaks anytime soon. I am hopping to make the Olympics it’s one of my dreams.

Before watching the video my thought was "I'm probably a 2 or a 3, I finished the 12 levels of Swimming in Canadian Swim lessons once upon a time". After watching the video, I think I'm a level 1. I can probably tread water for 10+ minutes, but there is no way I could do the Butterfly & have it "count" as legal. I assume there is a lot of people in my boat (noice, because boats go on water & you swim in water) who can't do the Butterfly, I think even some people capable of doing the level 3 standards time wise/endurance wise might not know how to do the Butterfly, that's not a "general public" skill as far as I'm aware. I just picked up a monthly pass at my local pool today & timed my 500m, it took me around 30 minutes, haha. It was anything but continuous though, I think I took a break every 25m, except the last 50m I did in one go. Each time I go I'll try to reduce the breaks taken until I can do 500m without a break again (like I had to do back in swim lessons years ago). Nice to be back doing activity, had an achilles injury (well still do) for a long time so running/sprinting which I used to do is less realistic for now. I did forget my towel, so I dried off using my pants & then wore my wet pants home like a casual, it's only upriver (you know like uphill, but in water) from here!
