I once took a pottery class - and in that time and place, there was a definite assumption that only women were interested in that. One man signed up for it, and the nearly universal assumption was that he must be gay if he was taking that class. "Nearly" because before the end of the course it became obvious that he and one of the female students had developed a deep and personal relationship, and were dating outside class. I wonder if he was ever aware about the assumptions - we were all polite and didn't say anything to him, of course.

When I started flying, I was having a drink with a male Cabin crew. I was asking him why flying ? He said it was easy he was sitting in school wondering what he wanted to do in life and realised that 80% of cabin crew are female ( early 2000s) and of the other 20% ... 90% of them were gay. So on a typical flight he would most likely be the only stright male Cabin crew. And CC are normally very good looking ( especially back then ) So his chances of getting laid with a good looking girl was pretty good ! 8 years later he married a very attractive fellow cabin crew so that guy was a Genius!

Relevant: When I was in the Marine Corps I went to visit my younger brother at an Air Force base. He worked in the base hospital. I walked up to the main desk and there was a very pretty young lieutenant working the desk. With respect and military decorum I told her who I was looking for. She picked up a phone and said: "Hi Jim, it's me Julie. Your brother is here at the desk" (he was on a first name basis with an officer??????) He had his own room in the barracks (I shared a squad bay with 23 other guys) and he had a waterbed (no kidding!!). I said: "Where can I join up?" I then made the rounds of the recruiting offices. Air Force: "We don't take Marines. You guys are psychos!!" Coast Guard: "We don't take Marines. You guys are psychos!!" Navy: "We don't take Marines. You guys are psychos!!" (Actually, I'd been on a Navy ship in a MarDet, but thought I'd try anyway). Army-I could transfer over, but I'd have to go to junior college and Officer Candidate School, so I did that.

Can be refreshing in the background but as an enlisted person I still had to recognize there was a line.

Precisely the reason why, in 8th grade, my friend Steve and I signed up for Home Ec. First day of class, teacher walks in, sees us and says: "Men should never be in a kitchen" (nevermind that at the time 99.9% of the chefs in the world, at that time, were men). So, first she banished us to another room, then she made up a whole curriculum for us that relied heavily on politics. I challenged her on this (I had a set of state education rules and regs in my possession). The principal transferred me to working in the school cafeteria (and getting academic credit). I was already working after school as a janitor for the school and got a free meal each day for working in the cafeteria-making things easier for my mom at home (I didn't need a sack lunch each day).
@BBC600Ай бұрын
I signed up for home ec. simply because I wanted to. I was also, the only biological male in class. The teacher was good about it but the classmates hated me being there. One of them (the president of the Student Representative Council) went so far as to tell me "Go back to the shop (the guys all signed up for industrial arts), where you belong." I probably shouldn't have said it in hindsight but I snapped "Maybe I want to learn to be a good housewife and homemaker too." This angered her more and she insisted that wasn't why they were there. The teacher overheard our argument and replied: "Actually, he's right. That would've been the original intention of this class historically and although the curriculum has since changed there are still traces of that fact that can be seen." That shut up the other student! I ended up being the only student in the whole school to take both Construction and Carpentry (the girls all chose online classes for that period) and Home Ec. in the same year. That was funny too though because we baked cookies in Home Ec. and there wasn't enough time between classes. There wasn't another class in the Home Ec. room so the girls got permission to use their laptops at the big table we had in there. They then brought me my cookies to the shop wrapped in tin foil. I managed to bribe the trouble maker (who ended up getting kicked out the next year) with one of them. We shook on "If Mr. Smith says you've been good at the end of class you can have one." I think Mr. Smith was surprised how well that worked. 😂

@@BBC600 I took shop the year before I signed up for Home Ec. In the first quarter we were rebuilding lawn mower engines. I was weeks ahead of everyone else because I was a nerd that hung out at Radio Shack and I knew how to electronically troubleshoot an engine, so, the shop teacher hid my piston for two weeks to give everyone else a chance to catch up. In the second quarter we had to troubleshoot a primitive circuit board (this was the mid 1970's). After a week I came in and found that the shop teacher had ripped all of the wires out of my circuit board. When I asked the teacher about it, he said "You're a f*cking genius, you figure it out." I barely finished the assignment before the end of the semester. The second semester, we had to build a shack. This was something that I was finally not great at and the teacher absolutely loved it. He also wouldn't let me near the wiring and when the other students consistently f'ed up the wiring, he let me and Steve (we'd grown into a team by then) set up the wiring and truth be told, it was Steve that set up the fuse box as Steve had a great dad and he had taught Steve how to do that.

The cabin leader would read out to the table at breakfast who had what skills and the the order in which they would take place. All the guys thought it was so sissy, to be in hair braiding. Even the cabin leader did a double take and struggled to read it off his paper. However by the next meal time (after I had had that skill), one of the boys in our cabin had their face lit up, and they looked at me and said, "Wait a minute. You actually got to touch a girl's hair!?" I replied (initially confused), "Yeah." That kid then said in astonishment "Wow!" The whole table saw me as a celebrity after that. In terms of the actual skill, I was just "one of the girls." Everyone was chill and didn't care. It was a while ago now but I remember I started with braiding string and then we did a braiding train (I was of course the caboose as I had short hair). 😂
