THIS IS VIDEO 2/2 ON THIS TOPIC. Watch video 1 here • Mythbusting Queen's Ch...
Queen are one of the greatest bands in rock history, with LOADS of classic songs and albums. Who doesn't love them?
With 13 number ones across the world, they are the only band where each member is credited as the sole writer of a chart topping hit. That's right: Freddie Mercury, Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon all wrote at least number one each.
BUT the story is actually a little bit more complicated than that. This is my second video about Queen's chart history, songwriting and general background. Hope you enjoy it!

This is a big cheeky tease! All members of Queen were very talented musicians. It's fantastic that these four boys found each other. But the genius was Freddie Mercury There is no Queen music in which Freddie's talent, colorful complex, interesting personality and hard work and diligence are not present. Freddie was a unique and highly educated multifaceted interesting talent. Check out the album with Monserrat Caballe or Freddie's solo album Freddie was an extraordinary talent, he was more than a rock star. He was the heart and engine of Queen and Freddie was also the glue. Freddie was the one who created peace and always carried the band forward. Freddie was humble and extremely loyal to the band and often gave in at his own expense. Freddie's excellent piano skills and fantastically beautiful voice meant a lot to the band's success Freddie's performance style is inimitable to this day.

Thanks for watching. You're right - the video is a bit of a tease, but hopefully people can take it in good humour :D I'm a huge Queen fan, and this isn't made to diss them. I defininitely agree that Queen were all very talented, and yes, I think Freddie was the beating heart of the band who kept it all together and lifted them to that higher level. I think you and I are fully in agreement! Hope you enjoyed my video :)

I really enjoyed this 2 parter and agree with almost everything you said. I only disagree with discounting "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" because it was a double A-side with the re-issue of Bo Rhap. As you stated, we'd never know how successful the song would have been on its own. So lets not guess and stick to the facts: Roger wrote it significantly on his own to earn a solo writing credit. It was a No 1 song. Also, Roger wrote "Heaven For Everyone" for his other band "The Cross" and Queen covered it and released it after Freddies death. It reached No 1 in Hungary. This is, without argument, a Roger solo song. Rog DIDNT do a Ringo! Sorry to be pedantic, and I did love your detailed examination of the songs.

The Roger slander is physically difficult to listen to.😭 it’s ok tho bc even if Roger wasn’t the greatest song writer in the band he was definitely Queen’s pretty poster boy who lures in the girls (and guys) with his pretty looks🤭🤭🤭 pretty privilege exists people😻🤭

Haha - I'm so sorry! It's definitely a little tongue in cheek - Roger is a great drummer, and of course his vocals were brilliant in Queen.I also definitely don't think he was a *bad* songwriter, but he was in a band with some *brilliant* songwriters, so it's not his fault he wasn't as good as them. But yeah, you're right, he was definitely very good looking! Thanks for watching!

@@bigyellowpraxis he has some great songs, he just needed help to make the songs hits, on every Queen album there's a Roger track and it stands out and adds variety, definitely in the 70's but on the hits front he's not the best.

Best example of Double A side with only one side being known surely is Killer Queen as no one mentions flick of the wrist the other a side. As for Roger Taylor I think if you look at his solo catalogue it shows he is good writer sometimes a little tightening of lyrics is needed but by no means a bad songwriter. Heaven for everyone was a number 1 in Hungary ( apparently) a Taylor song.

the entire bands contributed to all the songs. the person who got credit is the person who came in with the idea.

It's cleaner with Bernie & Elton. One wrote the lyrics and the other the music.

Funnily enough, you mention that Penny Lane is seen as the "true" single of that double A-side, and The Beatles agreed, as Penny Lane is included on the 1 album, while Strawberry Fields isn't. The other notable double A-sides that I can think of are both by The Jam, Going Underground/The Dreams Of Children, and Town Called Malice/Precious, both of those have clear winners in terms of popularity. It's been really interestinting to hear the stories behind the writing credits of these Queen songs, and it makes me wonder whether The Beatles have a similar mix of songwriting on various different tracks, some I already know of, like Harrison pushing for the sitar on Norwegian Wood, and also he helped Starr to write Octopus's Garden.

Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video. Ah ha - nice! I knew there were more double A side examples to back me up, but couldn't fit them all in. The Jam examples are good ones for sure! I'm sure there are just loads and loads more examples of this sort of messiness with the Beatles. I think getting to the bottom of 'what counts' as a songwriting contribution is tricky - I'm not sure I would call adding a sitar a songwriting contribution, but helping with lyrics and chords I almost certainly would. Ultimately, even the standard of 'would this songwriting claim stand up in court' isn't a very good one given how inconsistent that can be, and how subject to individual opinion it is. It's all a mess!

My take away from these vids is that each member of Queen wrote TWO individual number ones, not just one! I hear your argument, but I'm not inclined to reinterpret the bands own crediting system. In terms of musical genius I don't feel number ones is a good indication, and that each member of Queen wrote songs that were better than their number one hits.

Queen’s songwriting credits are definitely a mess. You can see how this whole process unfolds in the Making of One Vision documentary. You would expect Roger to compose the percussion parts on his own, but here’s Freddie ordering him how to hit a hi-hat right. And then Roger goes out to Brian to give him advices on guitar parts. While Brian is trying to change Freddie’s vocal melodies. And then there’s a whole brainstorm for the lyrics writing. That’s probably the way most of their songs were written 🤷🏻‍♀️

'He is drummer so what else can you expect'! Yes in a Queen context maybe, Roger is not the preminent song writer, but Roger has had the most successful solo career of any in the band. Five solo albums and three with his band The Cross where he wrote the majority of the songs. His latest album reaching no. 3 in the charts where he wrote produced and played all the instruments. Check some of his songs out I think you will be impressed.

Yes that's true. Maybe I should have used the word prolific rather than successful. However I was just trying to illustrate that just because Roger is the drummer it doesn't mean that he can't be a great song writer too.

I consider myself a fairly big fan I enjoy some of solo stuff, sorry Brian not yours, definitely not a superfan I would say of all the bands I like enough to have whole discography Queen are pretty consistent. If we ignore made in heaven and the cosmos rocks. But then I would question anyones objectivity if they think any artist is flawless.

Omg are you seriously suggesting they individually composed their parts They didnt! They had a style which added the same as Freddie could add a lot vocally But no they did not compose their own parts Look at your other video I left a comment Brian has said Freddie wrote his guitar oarts except for solo One vision was a collab but roger didnt just do his own thing Freddie didnt like parts so got him to re do them So he certainly did this on his own songs He composed their parts on puano or guitar
