We review this mini-laden skirmish battler! Set in Norse mythology, Mythic Battles Ragnarok has players taking divinities (like Thor) and pitting them against each other, helped by the draft of smaller units. This type of ameritrash war-game is not new, but now there's deck and hand management, combined with a ridiculous amount of units to pick from (helped from the kickstarter stretch goal unlocks!). There is a miniature plus card game element with card activation and art of war cards to manipulate your decks. While we haven't played the predecessor from Monolith Board Games (Mythic Battles Pantheon), we have played things like HeroScape and Sudden Conflict to give us a good comparison with dice rolling pacing. There is also 2 mini-campaigns, one of which we finished! If you have a bigger group, you can play this 2v2 for team play instead as a 1v1 duel! Who will win over Asgard?

Thank you for this video! Mythic Battles is my favorite skirmish game line. A note of correction, you don't need to discard 2 of the same dead unit's cards, they can be different. So once you start losing units you'll get a lot more flexibility, as two destroyed unit cards can be spent as an Art of War. This really escalates the late game as your coolest powers are going off more often. And a tip for more interesting and faster drafting: limit the draft options. Monolith curates monthly draft sets for each Mythic Battles game so you can focus on a limited set rather than a table full of options. You can just as easily deal out a limited selection of each draftable type. I hope you enjoy the game more going forward!

A case for Mythic Battles: Pantheon Why I like Mythic Battles (MBP/MBR/MBI) This has been my favorite game out of 200 others, since 2018! I played it around 12 times per year for the first 2 years, and now it is a special treat, whenever I pull it out and play, I’m very satisfied playing this 4 or 5 times per year. My 3 oldest children (16, 13, 12) love this game! For me Mythic Battles is an objective based skirmish game, with the option to slay your leader. At its heart it is a card management game (similar to Memior ‘44), the miniatures are just icing on the cake. Yes there are dice, but the luck can be mitigated like nothing I’ve seen before. The thing that makes this game shine the most, are the unit dashboards. They make the immersion so rich, you forget about the game mechanics behind it all! Epic card driven skirmish game! Drafting You get to draft your own team between 120+ units. You get to assemble crazy combinations of Greek gods, famed heroes, heroic troops, and mythic monsters based on a point system. You make decisions about the units you chose such as: power over speed, ability to fly or climb, high defense, low attack but potentially devastating special attacks or powers, someone may be brutal up close vs. a unit with high range, or purpose you want a unit that specializes in area attacks. Variety (replay-ability) The variety and repeatability is off the charts with this game! Choose between Greek /Norse/Egyptian Gods, heroes, monsters, and troops! The game has beautiful miniatures for every unit, but the game play is primarily driven by card management. It reminds me of Memoir ‘44 in that respect. Thematic X Factor Each unit feels like you are using their unique powers! The Hydra regenerates, Hercules can throw terrain trees at the enemy, Medusa petrifies, the Phoenix can fly and when it is killed it flares up and is reborn, and Zeus can shoot lighting across the battlefield! With most games you can see straight through the dramatic theme right down to the stale mechanics, but with Mythic Battles, it feels like I am ramming my Minotaur straight through Achilles and Leonidas, not counting numbers to see if/how much damage I do. It feels like Echo is using her power to stop characters dead in their tracks. Objective based skirmish game I love that as much fun as it is to beat the crap out of legendary figures, the aim of the game is collect 4 gems, but you better protect your Deity, or you can lose the game. Great combat mechanic Combat uses a special dice system that empowers you to mitigate randomness. Your almost always assured to deliver a blow, but you can gamble halfway or gamble big if you want. I always feel that the randomness in the dice is dulled and I am in control of what I want to accomplish. Tactical possibilities This game is very tactical, and I am empowered to play how I want. I can draft a team that nullifies every strength of my opponent, or I can exploit the weakness of great units that appears to be invincible. I can surprise the enemy with a lightning quick move, or set a trap to take down their God. Component & Art To top it off this game has gorgeous art, from the multiple duel-sided game boards, to the card art. The components are top notch as well, providing epic looking miniatures, beautiful looking jewels, and plastic terrain to add to the immersion. This game begs to be painted and dares you to go even further by building and designing your own terrain, but you don’t have to. ‘Epic Gaming Night’ experience This game always delivers an epic experience, and there is always an epic story to tell and remember from your play-through. Summary Unit actions are controlled by what cards you play Each unit feels like you are using their unique powers: Hercules can throw terrain trees and rocks at enemies, Medusa can petrify units, Zeus can shoot lighting; Hades gains lives with each destroyed unit Object of the game is to collect 4 power jewels or eliminate their opponents deity Very well balanced Combat uses a special dice system that empowers you to mitigate randomness Always epic battles and stories Very tactical game Players have control of what they would like to do

@@gundam1 😄 I feel like I’m being judged. For more context, I own 200 games. I have a full-time job, married, father of 6 busy kids, and I’m heavily involved in the community. In a good year I’ll play 40 games in a year. Lately, I’ve been playing about 25-30. My number one priority is pull out Mythic Battles 5 times a year. My daughter and I played it 2 months ago for 3 days. That was an awesome experience! I don’t want to play my favorite games over and over. I want them to remain fresh and special. I only play TI4 once per year on 4th of July weekend, I only play Rising Sun once per year on New Years Weekend. I try to play Lords of Hellas at least once, a Ryan Lauket game once, maybe pull out Eclipse / Xia / or EoTV once or twice. I want to play Arena: The Conflict one or two times per year (3 times per session). I used to have a goal to play Gloomhaven 12 times per year, but that fell off last year. I usually play my new games that arrive, then there are a few family favorites. During Halloween month I try to pull out MoM2 or Dead of Winter, or Horrified - sometimes that doesn’t even happen. Then there are games a want to devote time to, and that doesn’t happen either: Tainted Grail, Etherfields, ISS Vanguard, dare I say Tanares 🙊. But I don’t have the time or energy to do that. Skirmish games are my favorite, so I like to pull out ad many as I can, but Myrhic Battles is a MUST! I LOVE this game. I think about it all the time, I visit the FB sites are trying to offer help to those with questions. So yes, dedicating 5 sessions of Mythic Battles per is a big deal to me. The first 2 years were 12 sessions. Since 2018 that’s around 50 times so far…I can’t say the same for very many other games.

Hmmm…well, I’m glad you reviewed this, but you seemed to have missed the mark. The campaign is an afterthought, it is primarily a 2 - 4 player skirmish game. And on that element it shines. The dice are not the focus of this game, you can almost always guarantee 2 hits, but you can press your luck and try for more. I mostly choose the first. This is first and foremost a card driven objective based skirmish game. It is card management, but the rules give you plenty of freedom and flexibility. The hallmark of this game are the dashboards and the unique powers. There is no other skirmish game that has this much diversity. Sorry you didn’t enjoy it, it would be a different story if you played with me 😎. There are layers of tactics and strategy, and that’s beyond the drafting of your armies (which you don’t have to make complicated).
@Shelfside

Thanks for sharing! Yep it is primarily a skirmish game as mentioned in the review, but we thought we'd talk about the campaign since we did finish one of them. I like your point how you can almost always guarantee hits by rolling enough dice! I suppose 2 hits is the expected outcome when roling 7-9 dice, but I'm sure you guys know the math better. Also totally agree that the hallmark is the dashboards (player boards) and unique powers! There is so much to blend together! Finally, yep my score might have been a 6/10 if I play with you haha. I do see the layers of tactics and strategies, but in our plays everything just evened out to a 5/10 -Ashton

Maybe you should have varied your opponents more. My wife hates skirmish games and loves this as much as I do. She defends and collects runes because she dislikes confrontation. One of my buddies is always aggressive for all out combat and damage (plus one lucky dice roller) so playing him feels way different from a strategic standpoint. And another friend is a total euro guy trying to maximize every decision in the game. The four of us played a few free for all 1v1v1v1 matches and it was glorious. The only time I did not enjoy playing this game was the 1v1 with my euro gamer friend because the draft probably took longer than the match with him over thinking everything and every turn putting him into a state of analysis paralysis. Then again, to each their own, just an idea. Still enjoyed the review and your opinion 😊

I own Mythic Battles Patheon 1.5 set. All of the complaints that you have, I also have. The rules and players aids are not the best and I found that I needed to create my own player aids since there can be a lot that is missed. I also really liked the dice combat... at first. Then it feels fiddly and I just want to get to the results. Overall, I thinks its a pretty good system but I think it needs some more love in the rules department.

Fair points. I liked the game, even if I eventually sold it: it requires a bit too much preparation to be enjoyed as an beer- and-bretzel game, but if you want to play with an higher level of competitiveness for regular play, including theorycrafting and competitive list building, the rule set has so many conflicts/poor wording on powers that limits that aspect. Still, I personally rate it as 7/10

The "reference cards" are not for you or your opponent to use during the game, they are recruitment cards (as seen in the screenshot from the campaign you've shown) so you don't have to take out all the big boards for the draft. Makes drafting easier. And yes, the scenarios are obviously not meant to be competitive, that's what the competitive mode is for, duh. They are thematic. Still, good review overall, thanks for showing this awesome system some love! Some of the takes sound borderline braindead to me though, like simultaneously suggesting a system like Gloomhaven for an army sized skirmish PVP game - that would be a real slog - while also wanting to simplify the dice rolling to a point where degrading stat-lines and positioning doesn't matter anymore due to the oneshottability. Or being mad that you attack a lot in a PVP Skirmish game... 🙈 could go on, but won't.
@Shelfside
@Shelfside 18 күн бұрын
Cheers! The recruitment cards felt weird to use during draft, since they don't explain the Titan/Divinity/Monster/Hero abilities, and also how their health decreases. We were thinking, why not get as much info as possible during drafting? To be clear on the Gloomhaven suggestion, I'm not saying that card combat should be introduced, rather the line of having to set up combos and use extraneous things for combat like elements. For the dice rolling simplifying, that is purely for my personal enjoyment- cause I just find that more wacky fun, and also faster (since I prefer this genre of ameritrash to just run faster). Attacking isn't inherently bad, its rather that when done with this system of dice rolling it gets quite tedious for me. I am no stranger to conflict, just has to be done well (I say that it's odd that you're constantly spamming "simple attacks"). Hope this clears up stuff! -Ashton

@Fenraellis
@Fenraellis 17 күн бұрын
@@Shelfside I believe the idea is to use the Recruitment cards to generate the Draft Pool. Shuffle and deal 4~6 each of the Gods/Monsters/Heroes, then use the Troop cards, and Jarls, the same way, to generate the available units to actual perform your Draft from. I suppose at that point, they could have simply had the unit's picture on them, because you're right that simply showing the max-health stats and Ability names for the non-Troop cards isn't particularly helpful, but maybe they thought some people would have confused them with Activation Cards?
