my honest question is how do we know for sure Ford was being honest about having prisoners upstairs with him during the day? Could he have lied to cover his own guilt? Would William Wood try to downplay the "Mormon Beef" as well. We know that people didn't show up like they said they would. Is it possible they themselves didn't want to admit that it really happened with the mistreatment. Where can we find these personal records mentioned of Wood and the interviews with Jensen and Ford. Thanks for the video. Well done and love the story about Old Major.

It was mentioned how their eyes were hurting from being in the dark when they were exposed to light. How often were they let out of the jail for daylight exposure or to get some movement or exercise? What about using the bathroom? Where would they do that? In a pot that could be emptied by the jailer, or in an outhouse? It was relieving to hear that they didn't spend their days in the dungeon and that there were frequent visitors and even food gifts. Thank you for many additional facts and insights provided int this video.

@@VaLynne1 I've had the opportunity to do the Liberty jail tour. We were treated so wonderfully it had me thinking the best missionaries are assigned there!

I’m a little bit confused. I’ve heard many times that the men were warned by the Lord not to eat the meat and He told them that it was human meat. Why would they receive this warning if they were misunderstanding what the jailers said they were feeding them? Also there was at least one time the food was poisoned. I wouldn’t call the way they were treated as being taken good care of.

interesting that some of the things that you mentioned are false were taught when I visited the visitors center and the replica. thanks for correcting

When did you last visit the visitor center? My husband and I severed there 2017-2018 and at that time the scripted things did talk about some of the things that have since been shown to be myths, or folk lore as Br. Baugh called it and they have been disproven. While serving there, my husband and I actually met Alexander Baugh and we heard most of what he had to say in this discussion when we met him. There have been many changes at the Jail, starting with the mannequins they had to represent 5 of the men (Sidney Rigdon was released in January so was there about half as long as the Prophet and other men) who were there the full time with the prophet. There have been many changes since we served there, but I was able to go on a tour this past July and see the changes and hear the new narrative. What is said now, as Brother Baugh mentioned is they were in horrible conditions, even though some of the things we believed were found to be not true, there were many things that were. At the jail the bars on the lower level narrow windows are vertical, but we know now they were horizontal and that is how a sister was able to pass her pies she had made through the window to the men who were there. Another thing Alex Baugh is responsible for correcting, is the spelling of Haun's Mill, the event which of course also occurred in Missouri, a few days before Joseph was arrested. The Early Saints spelled the owner of the mill as Jacob Hawn, but in actuality it was Jacob Haun, who never joined the Church. He left the area after the massacre that occurred there and moved west. Alex Baugh found a descendent of Jacob Haun, she is the children's author Beverly Cleary. She had Jacob Haun's journal. After finding the journal he was able to find Haun's grave and other information about him. The Church corrected the spelling in the online Doctrine and Covenants maps, about 8 years ago or there abouts.

@@VaLynne1 I'm from nearby Liberty, MO. Fun fact: Decades ago sometimes nearby young men's or a young women's groups from the surrounding wards would allow the youth a campout there inside the jail. That was quite some time ago though.

they may have had some heat in a pot belly stove ( but the smoke that came from it was so horrible that they would rather not use it).

Very interesting. I am so the prisoners were not down the dungeon part of that jail all the time. I am also glad they could stand up. I am surprised and grateful they were allowed so many visitors. I didn't know Joseph Smith Jr. owned a dog! These things make jail as awful as I thought it was. However, it still was a grueling experience! I am Joseph wrote that 29 page letter that it is still available to read. Brigham Young was inspired to include portions of that letter in the Doctrine and Covenants. I am grateful to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day Saints. All the persecution the early Saints endured saddens me. Quite a refiners fire!

id be interested to know about the reports of them being poisoned in prison either by actual poison or by food poison, if their food was "passable" and the fact that one account I read said that the food they were given was so putrid and rotten that they only ate it to keep from starving to death. maybe that wasn't the norm, but the exception during a period of time? I find it hard to believe the accounts of the guards. "honorable men" as described by other people have done some pretty awful betrayals under pressure. saints lied in court to keep themselves form a similar fate as these 6. and a guard or deputy that is recounting this 40 or 50 years later in a social climate that had changed could possibly be not telling all the nitty gritty facts. I'm not saying that is the fact of the matter, but just suggesting it as a possibility. also if they did have a guard house that might make sense. I initially thought it seemed ridiculous that the guards would allow the prisoners to stay in the upper room during they day while they hung out outside. obviously a guard house makes sense there, hehe.
