Here's a long drawn-out 2-bit video of me installing a couple of night storage heaters off of an economy 10 supply.
In case you are unaware, economy 10 is 10 hours of cheap electricity. These 10 hours are spread throughout the day and vary depending on your electricity supplier.
The heaters installed require a 24hour supply to power an internal clock within the heater, a fan and an additional boost element. The economy 10 supply will warm the internal storage bricks within the heater. these bricks will hold the heat until the timer on the heater decides to release it into the room it is situated in.
enjoy...

Very relaxing... I don't know much at all about electrics but was fascinated to watch and learn, as a neighbour asked if I could take a look at hers, learnt how to turn it on and off... lol if its not working after that over to the pro's :) . great Video mate Thanks

What a brilliant video. Safety’s paramount and this comes through well/top notch in this production. (Viz., not assuming the neutrals aren’t live.) This guy is good and worth every minute spent educating the unwise, including me. I’ve learnt an awful lot watching this.

Excellent video dude. I get funny looks from other trades when I multi tool back boxes in walls. Glad I am not the only person who does it as I was starting to doubt my methods. :) I do have chasing tools etc but the dust that is kicked up is unreal, not so bad if the house is clear but that is not always the case. Thanks again.

In a lot of older houses, they never bothered running 3 core and earth for 2-way lighting upstairs, they just nicked the permanent feed from the downstairs 2 gang light switch but the neutral return was still on the upstairs lighting circuit. Now days with the dual RCD boards, it usually gets picked up as the downstairs floor lights are on one the upstairs lights are on the other.

Alvin Ashman I had that 2 weeks ago. Replaced a consumer unit. Everything tested okay. Got called back the very next day as the board triped when the landing light switches where switched in a certain combination. Not something I had ever experienced before so I hadn't investigated it prior to upgrading the consumer unit. Luckily for me it was too difficult to get a supply from the ground floor lights up to the landing light fixture so that the neutrals were harmonised.

hi there it is a good way of getting round not having to mess up the decoration by running in a new 24hr cable .The only downside is that the customer does not take advantage of the economy 10 tariff for those two heaters but everything in life is a trade off . good videos

Just to let you know for the future you can buy extra long feet for the heaters, but by the looks of that windowsill the feet would of made the heater to tall

I’ve got 5 storage heaters to replace to Dimplex…I’m running in 5 feeds for the 24hr supply. Not got enough ways in the main cu and was thinking of putting a separate board for the 24 hour supply only..I’ve not done any storage heaters before is this an acceptable way of doing it?

I have just had economy 10 installed with a smart meter but the switchover only occurs as per the old economy 7 timings. The tariff changes as per the economy 10 timings and rates, but my storage heaters are de energised at these daytime slots and only become active fro 12 till 7am as per the old system. How do I get my economy 7 circuits to cut in and out according to the new time slots. Is it a meter problem or a wiring problem. What do you think ? Any help please.

Hi great videos and enjoy watching as a sparks myself, quick question on the conduit as spacers for the CU, are you using galv not PVC? Got a job coming up and want to try this way of installing. Is is fiddly getting the conduit behind the board to screw in? Thanks and keep the vids coming!
@MyTrustedElectrician

MrJayw1979 I use PVC conduit. Much easier to chop to length with a conduit cutter. It's just my way of doing things and since I started it made life a lot easier. It can be very fiddly if the cupboard is small.

Those storage heater blocks are specific to the DImplex Quantum model. Standard heaters still use the original sized bricks. E10 only gives a mid day boost. And some of those old heaters can contain asbestos.

Hello mate, trying to understand the different set ups and what is required, The problem I have, is a property has the old type 1 supply off peak storage heaters, I believe they phased these out in 2017, one of the heaters is not working and theres a possibility that no spares are now available, does this mean a new type storage heater will mean a new meter? if so what about all the other heaters which are working?? it looks like theres two consumer units but 1 unit has just the off-peak storage heaters on it, the other is the domestic supply!! Will it mean a new meter? A bigger consumer unit? It seems a lot to replace just 1 heater to me.

Hi enjoyed your video but have you ever changed a night storage heater to an electric heater ...I know that it's changing the socket to a spur which is not an issue .but do you need to do anything else as I am told it has two income feeds is this correct...sorry I do have my level 3 and 17th edition but I am still learning as you don't find that information in a book..sorry I think you would give me a sensible answer not like some of these people on the forums

Yes mate, the industry is definitely changing. Aico are doing away with their ionisation smoke alarms. I've fitted two of those energy efficient storage heaters now, the bricks may be smaller but they still weigh a ton and yes, I made the mistake of not laying the elements in the grooves properly and had to take it all out and do it again. One question, why not two choc boxes in the trunking as opposed to the Wago junction box?

Feeding a new storage heater with a single 24 hour supply cable to feed 2 spurs will confuse some people because it's dependent on the type of electricity meter and tariff used. So in some cases this method will use cheap rate electricity and sometimes not. The correct meter and tariff is necessary for this method to work in the most cost effective way.
@grahamhall1598
@grahamhall1598 2 жыл бұрын
It appears you have made this super complicated - you can either put it on a 24 hour supply and programme it to charge when the meter flicks over or have an off peak supply for charging and a spur for the perm live if there is 2 meters. Nice job either way 👍🏻
@alvinashman6371
@alvinashman6371 6 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest with you mate, I've never come across a storage heater which comes with the heat resistance flex supplied, I usually keep some 3 core 1.5mm sq for the 24 hour (boost) and 3 core 2.5mm sq for the off-peak.
@nickbuckle646
@nickbuckle646 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think you need to fire seal the holes in the back of the board where your cables enter. My reasoning is your trunking is mounted behind the board so the fabric of the building is left unchanged, the board will still contain any fire. If your board was mounted on a wall that had to maintain a certain level of fire protection and your cables came in from behind then you would need to seal up.

Johnathan Wright Yes for over 32A = 5s max trip. Always struggle to find an answer for a circuit of over 32A covered by a BS61008 due to special location. AS obviously at 30mA it must trip at 200ms (0.2s). Too many grey areas 🙈 What's your thoughts?
@MyTrustedElectrician
@MyTrustedElectrician 6 жыл бұрын
Actually to answer my own question. I imagine it's the difference between earth leakage and short circuit. 5s for a short circuit and 0.2s for a path to earth. Thanks for pointing this out. I'm sure I've done this mistake more than once. I'll be sure not to do it again 👍

Fischers off to jail, yippee! Sick of going round grannies houses after a Fischer salesman has "upgraded" all her heating and she's spent all her pension on running costs. Hope you're not still installing them. I'd stick with storage heating and teach em how to use it - can be cost effective if they're on good tariffs.
