Hi Matt, good informative video, a couple of things I’d like to point out though. I work on storage heaters quite often as my work is all for the social housing sector. The first thing, like someone else has mentioned, never ever remove that internal cover until you have checked if that model of heater has Asbestos inside it. There are 100’s of older models that do including Dimplex ones, you really should point that out or put a disclaimer on the video regarding that. You also take a different approach to how I inspect and fault find them. Removing that internal cover and bricks is normally the last thing I would do, totally unnecessary in most cases. Just doing a simple continuity test to check the resistance of all 4 elements will tell you the condition of them, and if reading not as expected you can then test the resistance of each element individually, which can still be done without removing internal cover and bricks. This method is also better as a lot of the time on a typical economy 7 system you do not have that hour boost during the daytime, so will be testing on a dead circuit. The majority of the time it’s just the thermal cut out that needs resetting, but from time to time I do replace the elements, thermostats or repair replace burnt out cables e.t.c, but always find a continuity test the best starting point. Agree with you on the operation of the dials though.

Great video, always interesting to see real world fault finding, also an interesting talking point is it is not always the equipment that is faulty, sometimes you Can attend fault finding and the outcome be the client is not familiar with the correct ways operate the appliance optimally and is in need of guidance. I guess something in situations of regular turn over tenants or purchasing a property with existing appliances.

Thank you, great video, now I understand about the output being a physical flap that opens and releases more heat. So I can switch it off at the wall during the day and the output will continue to be right as it's mechanical/physical flap. Also, how were you able to switch it on there in the morning and get heat into the elements - don't they only draw energy at night? Extremely useful, Thank you! This is the exact same model and size as my storage heaters. I'd never experienced this type heating until I moved into a new flat recently, and its been a shock financially! Each heater is costing me £1 an hour. Is this normal? Even with just 2 heaters its costing me £14 a day to heat the flat. Also, despite having the output dial at the minimum, the heaters are very hot in the night, once the Economy 7 turns them on. I'll take the cover off and check the vents are working properly, and maybe also check the thermostat?

I've never used or owned storage heaters so I am unfamiliar with how they work so watching this has given me some insight. Those heater elements heat the bricks overnight with cheap rate leccy and those bricks are made from such a material that will retain the heat and release it slowly enough to keep a house warm enough all day and maybe night time too, even in the depths of the coldest winter? What material are those bricks made out of?

Another great and really informative video from you guys. . Before dismantling , would you not have been better off PAT testing the appliance ? I PAT tested one recently which failed the insulation resistance test suggesting that it was an element that had failed. This one would have passed I presume? Which may well have saved you from having to dismantle it with the associated risk of asbestos which is present is in some types of storage heaters? Adrian

Thanks for the video. I worked as a mate when I retired and my first job was building these things all day.....humphing bricks upstairs is no fun! I'm not a spark but have worked as a mate off and on....how do you check the heater if they're on a time switch that only powers them up overnight? Do you do the work at night? Also, I've found occasionally they overheat and trip. There is a reset button under the cover near the thermostat control.

I have three of these very same heaters. 1x XL12 in the hall and 2x in the living-room, larger XL18s The two living-room ones are not working. Vents closed thermostat on boost. Left that way overnight but still stone cold in the morning. Power supply is on at the wall switches and mains board

Is it normal for a storage heater to let out heat while it's storing at night? The output is turned all the way down, but if I'm up early (or late), like 3am, the heater is red hot.

In these storage heater is a safty cut off located near the power in switch which will disconnect if items are placed on the vents of heater which I have had to reset as people do cover vents he screws in the bottom on heater are 7 millermeter sockets head's

After a few years old the Dail switches brake at the bottom and will cost 8 pounds for a pair it's the heat that brakes them advise once set leave along prolong the life

Great video Matt. It does beg the question as to why storage heaters are so expensive when the units are so simple and the components are cheap, at least from what I have found. I have a problem with a similar Creda storage heater with four elements. One side hot, the other side clearly not. Already had 2 elements replaced just over a year ago and expect the other two have gone now. If replacing the elements, how are they removed and new ones fitted? Or do you have that in another video? :-)

My storage heating has suddenly stopped working totally, but the normal heater still works, the fuse box is ok. Any ideas what the fault is ?

It is way easier to use a small amp clamp to measure the current flow to test the unit. You don’t have to open the inner panel to do it. Would have taken less than 5 minutes to test the elements.

I take it the heater was not on economy 7 for you to be able to test it?

Hi Mat. So are we saying it was what I call user error.

Ah storage heaters, the equivalent of an 8 liter V8 to go get groceries.

The metal inside cover edges can cut your hands if you are not careful I would wear gloves for this.

But the input thermostat could still be faulty, just because it came on for a few while dosnt mean it will take a full charge.

You often cannot see the model number until you take the bloody things off of the wall and as such check the model number for asbestos. Good video though

Sounds like incorrect use can really put the "rage" in "storage heater".

We produce heating elements and equipment. Small or large.

Conclusion: there is no fault, other than the design fault of storage heaters - they do not insulate the heat while charging. The only way to get them hot during the day is to have them being super hot during the night by charging them at full power. Turning the output to zero while charging makes no difference.
